Gore-Tex gives the Hedgehog waterproof, breathable protection for year-round weather, and full-grain leather keeps the upper strong while mesh ensures breathability and reinforcements extend longevity.
The Hedgehog Mid GTX also features The North Face's TPU Cradle heel-stability technology for soft impact absorption and a firmer toe-off at each step. Great Shoe
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
- Fit:True to size
- Size Bought: 9.5
I bought these for my son and he really likes them. Its a great light weight shoe for hiking, The size is true to size. Great for a everyday shoe to wear for work.
Nice solid boot
- Fit:Runs large
- Size Bought: 9.5
First off I had to go about a 1/2 size smaller than I normally wear. They seemed slightly larger than most of my shoes. But BC is great with exchanges and promptly sent me out my adjusted size. The boots fit great. I did put a pair of green Superfeet inserts into them. This is the norm for me as most shoes and boots do not come with proper arch support. Once you try them you don't go without.
The boots have a nice gripping Vibram sole. They fit like a comfy glove with a smartwool or ski sock on. My feet have stayed dry and warm. It has only been winter since I have had them so I can't comment on whether or not they are too warm in the summer. No blisters or rough spots right out of the box. My only problem occurred with my right boot. I felt like the lace hook rivot at the bend of the boot dug in a little so I by-passed this and have had no problems.

The best shoes I have ever worn. Feels like I am walking on clouds. I love them.
Solid boot
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I've put off writing any big reviews of any of my kit until I felt I'd adequately put it "through the wringer", that and found myself in front of the computer long enough to get it all down. From single and multi-day hikes through NH's Whites and around New England to a trip to the top of Kilimanjaro, these boots have seen "the wringer" while on my feet.
Long story short, these are good boots. They're moderately supportive; they've got enough sensitivity that you can feel the rocks and terrain under your foot, yet still grab your foot to keep it in the same spot if any of those rocks decide to slip. The grip with the Vibram soles is great, you can practically run up a window in them. I wouldn't set out on a multi-day trek under a heavily loaded pack and over rough terrain with these, but I wouldn't expect to in most boots in this price bracket, and for lighter loads they're great.
Out of the box the first thing I noticed is that I could have jump-roped with the laces. There's a feature you don't see in the bullet list. I've never been accused of having narrow feet, but when laced up tight with some heavy socks on I was still afraid I'd trip on the laces, so I snipped a few inches off each lace and capped the ends with some heat-shrink tube (available at your friendly local hardware store), and have been very happy with them since. Easy fix. The boots took me a little longer than I expected to break in, but once they did the flexibility through the foot and up the ankle is great. That being said, one time during a particularly long hike through a boulder field with a decently heavy pack and tired legs I found myself wishing for a little less ankle flex when the rock under my foot decided to roll. But I’m not sure the designers at TNF really had that type of use in mind for this boot. A pretty cool feature about this boot is the hard plastic toe cap. It was great in that same boulder field or when descending through scree or anything slidey. No more beat up toes. However, that hard plastic cap does make the toe box feel a little bit wonky. There’s a ton of room to move your toe up and down (or put on heavy socks), but side to side it’s locked in. My heel has always felt locked into these boots as well, and so far zero blisters and zero hot spots. It could just be my foot, but the fit in the toes does feel a bit weird, but it’s not serious enough to be a deal breaker. The boots are super breathable, I’ve never suffered from swamp foot in them, and as long as it doesn’t come over the top of the boot, there is no water getting in. I spent a few days in particular trekking in sleety-rainy-nastiness, but my piggies stayed dry. Shallow river crossings have never been an issue either… as long as you stay upright.
These boots do what they’re supposed to. The support, waterproofing, breathability and durability are spot on. The fit is even good, just a tiny bit weird in the toes. Or it could be my weird feet.
Great boot, right out of the box.

I usually lean very heavily on reviews when I buy anything. As such, I was taking a leap of faith purchasing these without anyone's prior experience to rely on.
These hardly got broken in (wore them on a morning hike over a couple miles with only +/- 500ft) before I took them out over night. This weekend did a quick overnight up and down about 3,500 ft and 6 miles in both humid heat and pouring rain - 0 Blisters, 0 Discomfort, not too hot and completely dry throughout whole trip.
They look great, they feel great and they really perform. Would highly recommend. Fits to size with smartwool socks.
