The North Face Men’s Hedgehog GTX XCR Boa Hiking Shoe is your footwear answer to cold, wet trail conditions. With a Gore-Tex XCR waterproof breathable membrane to seal out weather and a Boa lacing system that is impervious to moisture or freezing temps, you’re feet stay protected whether you’re out for a two mile day hike or a weeklong ultralight sprint. The lugged Vibram sole helps you stick to slick surfaces, and a TPU shank plate guards stabilizes you on rough terrain. The North Face also added a Northodic ergonomic footbed and an EVA midsole for supportive comfort.

Bottom Line: A supportive light hiker for any trail conditions.

My first go-round...

By:
December 9, 2010

First, I have to say, that these were purchased to wander the Bavarian countryside during early winter, largely based on the Goretex liner and the novelty of the Boa Lacing system. So, admittedly, overkill but hey... I made one adjustment to them by replacing the insoles with something with a bit more structure although I by no means, have demanding feet and they are pretty awesome. Prior to my visit to Germany and Austria, I took them for a few trail runs and I have to say they were a tad warm and I developed a few hotspots but, I think that had more to do with my choice of setting for the Boa laces than the shoe. All in all, comfortable, quick-on and off, and the sole is very grippy on many surfaces, dry or wet. The side note there is exploring 12th century cathedrals means everyone hears you coming!

Florida Hedgehogs

By:
December 2, 2010

This is my 4th pair of Boa Hedgehogs, I run a growing and a packing operation so walk 7-9 miles 7/365. The gore tex sock starts leaking at the flex points at around 700 miles so has to be replaced. The Vibram sole and the Boa system is awesome. Give it 4 stars.

North face Hedgehog with Boa lacing

By:
August 6, 2010

Great shoe. I have foot pain from a pinched nerve and walk three times further before discomfort hits. Very easy slip on and click and the shoe is tight as I want it. I was surprised to find I like the shoe looser and if I am seriously hiking it is just a click to adjust. I will buy another pair of this shoe.

Great shoe for prepped trails

By:
September 9, 2009

Good support, excellent traction, light weight and very comfortable. BOA system is easy to use but may need to adjust tension when coming down steep downhills to avoid foot slipping forward. Other than that, perfect for trails that are reasonably well prepared

Love the shoes...

By:
June 26, 2009

I've had these now a few weeks and I wear them everywhere; the gym, hiking, running errands, paintballing, ect. and they are great shoes overall. The size was true, good traction up and down slopes but awful on moist rocks (I can't think of many shoes that are good on wet rocks though). Love the Boa lacing system but occasionally/ randomly it unbinds w/o hitting the knob; this could prove to be an issue when combined with the low top form factor, increasing the chance of an ankle turning on the trails. The Gore-Tex XCR lining is not too hot on long hikes and the water proof attributes are a must have! I'm looking forward to trailblazing the summer away in these babies!

Hello again... This is Joe C. I am now returning these shoes due to the Boa system failing; the knob on right shoe finally busted after less than 6 months of use. Both shoes would unbind randomly which became annoying. I never over tightened the laces which I think would be a little hard to do without force (another draw back). I loved the fit and comfort of the shoe and the water proof/ breathable goretex lining was great but the Boa lacing system needs to go back to the drawing board. I have returned the shoes to Back Country and ordered the hightop version of these shoes and yes, it will also have the Boa system; I hope they will be better this time round. I also wanted the high tops for better ankle support where I find myself hiking a lot of hilly terrain and could use the extra ankle support.

Love The Shoe

By:
May 17, 2009

This is a great shoe for hiking and general wear. Going through the airport security is sure easy, too. The speed lace system works great for even tightening and quick removal. The arch support is good, in addition to the shoe fitting like a glove. I normally wear a 9, but got a 9 1/2 because I have a little wider feet. I don't know why there aren't any stores that stock this shoe.

Love the BOA

By:
April 20, 2009

This is the second pair of TNF BOA shoes I have owned (the previous pair wore out but the BOA system was still working) They are like owning a slip-on but with the support of a laces shoe. Being able to micro adjust for the terrian is a godsend on hikes

Love North Face

By:
March 30, 2009

I am hard on shoes i have owned some many in the past 2 years i lost count but my first pair of north faces stood up to it all. I am constantly outdoors and even in the rain the only way my feet got wet in these was when i did a creek crossing. Also the grip of these shows are amazing no slipping for me even on the many red mud hills around here. And to end it out comfortable and very flexiable i just pray to they don't get rid of the boa lacing system. I am and engineer and love this system it works so well and no more tying or replacing laces and i have yet to break it. Love these shoes

4th Pair Keep Em Coming NF

By:
April 10, 2009

Fourth pair of Boa equipped North Face shoes, the newest pair appears to be as good or better than the others as they have refined the lace eyelets so as not to bind as they are tightened. I've worn the daylights out of all of them in all kinds of conditions and have never ever had any problems others seem to have with the Boa system. I think the key things is not to twist the knob until you lose feeling in your foot lol I certainly hope that North Face not abandon this system, it's innovative and just like most new ideas will improve. I always order one full size larger with NF shoes and boots as they seem to run a touch smaller than New Balance or Nike. I've had the hedgehog sole on a pair of the taller NF shoes they will track dirt more than others but they are Vibran and will wear like iron and by having Goretex makes this shoe an all around winner.

not waterproof

By:
February 5, 2010

on my second pair because of size. love the boa and vibram, really disappointed by the lack of waterproofness. Ran the toe box for 5 mins under the sink to check waterproofness, all was well. checked them about a half hour and the roof of the toe box was really damp. WHY??? I realized today, there is stitching all way down the center seam into the toe box and it doenst seemed to be taped. Pretty moronic on NF's part. Still Ill probably keep em because of the first toe reasons for bumming around the city.

they're not waders - people don't usually spend 30 minutes straight in puddles with a low cut shoe.

It does sound like an abnormal pair. Boa has its "Dialed In for Life Guarantee" which guarantees the system for the lifetime of the shoe. All you need to do is visit the site and complete a form for the replacement parts, which can be switched in and out in no time flat. In all, there are over 5 million pairs of Boa shoes and boots on the planet -- and they are able to provide customer service with ONE person. Yep, that's how seldom there are problems. FULL DISCLOSURE: I work for Boa.

DONT AGREE JST336... Hiked in the Frank Church Wilderness in Idaho on a week long trip with a 75 lb pack and these shoes were the shissle!!! No problems at all with the lacing system. In and out of these with ease. Very supportive and grip like champs in all terrain thrown at you. I'd recommend these shoes to anyone. Happy hiking!!!

Great Shoe!

By:
March 30, 2009

Got a pair about 3 weeks ago and wear them in the ER for 12 hour shifts. Great arch/ankle support and minimal break-in time. I plan to use them for 2 trips to Moab this May and October. The Gortex does a great job of keeping my feet dry of bodily fluids as well...
