The North Face Heckler Backpack

I am not personally to impressed with this pack. It doesnt seem to fit right. Since there is no chest strap the shoulder straps continually slide so you have to hold them the entire time you are hiking. The back is not vented so I am sure this is not a pack you will want to use in the summer. The overall shape of it looks very strange to me and it does not seem to make good use of space. The material is almost like heavier polyester than North Face typically uses and is 100% not water proof. The front compression ties broke the first time I used the pack, its just not cut out for any heavy use. I actually wish I never bought this pack, and if it were the first North Face pack I bought I might not have ever purchased another. The North Face makes some of the best gear but this pack misses the mark completely.

This does not have an internal compartment to store a camelbak bladder, but there is no reason why you couldn't put one in if you wish.

Does the NF Heckler backpack have back ventilation like a mesh back? I have used the NF Borealis pack and love it; I'm trying to find something nearly identical - with a bit more storage (2000 cu in)

Nope solid neoprene, so it makes for a sweaty back. Other than that it is an overall a great backpack!

No there is no ventilation, but I haven't really experienced any excessive sweaty back issues. Although I have not used this pack in the summer yet.

As is typical with The North Face, this bag has awesome quality construction. In addition to using it as a daypack, i also use it for school and it has held up well carrying all of my books.
would be nice if it had a chest strap, but oh well.
Awesome Backpack

The North Face Heckler is a great multi-purpose backpack with plenty of room inside. Whether going on a day hike or are a student in high school or university this is a great choice. There is room for many binders and/or books or a laptop inside the main compartment, while the smaller main compartment has multiple places to place supplies so you are extra organized. As for day hikers, this backpack has plenty of space for all the stuff you would need for a great hike. I have this bag in black and I love it. I highly recommend it!

I'm tyring to decide between the Heckler and the Recon. It says the Heckler is bigger, but I read somewhere that the Recon was actually bigger. I need one that will hold my macbook and a ton of college books for a trip.
Thank you! :)

The Heckler is slightly bigger than the Recon- but it is also quite a bit more boxy, so might be a better shape for a ton of books.

The Heckler is a bigger bag and works great for a school bag. It can fit a macbook and about 3 thick text books. The recon gets a bit more cramed with a computer and books in it. I'd go with the Heckler.
Great bag

I got this bag two years ago and its has given me no problems and i have never had any tears in the fabric, although one of my friends who has it had the top strap tear but it never became completely useless. I can fit clothes for three days and a pair of shoes and put an old sleeping bag in the straps underneath the bag and it is still comfortable. i have never used the stretchy cords on the front of the bag but i don't know what they're used for. All in all though, its a great bag

Bought this backpack specifically to use when i need to transport large items on my motorcycle and occasionally store my motorcycle gear (ie: helmet, jacket, etc). The bag lives up to expectations and then some. The main pocket is very spacious, enough to hold a helmet and leave you some extra room for other stuff. The build is very solid and it looks pretty sweet. I recently used it to travel to Las Vegas for a weekend and was quite impressed at how much clothing (including shoes) i was able to put in there. The design of the strap make the bag feel comfortable and light on the shoulders.

I love it. its kinda big and overwhelming though at first, but once you load it with stuff its perfect.

Write your question here...my son is in Middle School and has a lot of books would this back pack be a good choice for him?

I used it in middle school and liked it. The only thing is the back of the bag is stiff so it is sometime hard to fit in small lockers but it didn't create any real problems

depending on your sons size, this bag might be big on him.

Which should I get? The Heckler of the North Face Bandwidth?
I'm looking for a smaller backpack for maybe 2 smaller books and a laptop (humanities student -- no big biology books here). I already own a Terra 30 pack, which is a great day or weekend bag so I don't need anything too roomy. Which should I go for?

Look for something with back ventilation, I have a similar NF pack and my back gets sweaty. Something similar to this (or bigger) would be a better investment.

Will this be good for me? I will use it for college. I will carry my laptop and bunch of books. Will it look bulky/like a turtle shell if there isn't a lot of books in it?-Thanks
Dave Madsen

I think you'll surviveThis is a great college pack and carries a laptop and books no problem. It has bottom an side compression straps so that will reduce the turtle effect when you don't have much in it.
