Built with Gore-Tex Pro Shell fabric for ultimate weather protection on light-and-fast climbing missions, The North Face Men’s Heathen Jacket is your secret weapon against harsh alpine conditions. The high alpine pockets remain accessible with a harness on, and the helmet-compatible, adjustable hood lets you hunker down at the belay.

Bottom Line: Forget god, the Heathen Jacket will protect you in the alpine.

For Alpine style climbing, this jacket is top of the line. The strength to weight ratio is perfect. Considering my shell piece will spend a lot of time in the pack on big climbs, and usually comes out only when the SH*# hits the fan I need it to be light. This Jacket is light and yet DURABLE. The hood fits over your helmet, which is crucial. The pockets are designed to be functional with a harness on which is HUGE. And MOST IMPORTANTLY, the Gore-Tex Pro is the holy grail of water proof breathable fabric right now, and has a little bit of stretch which is VERY NICE. I personally think this is one of the most high performance shells out there. This is a sports car, not a station wagon.

This Jacket has lightweight fabric, but it has survived numerous bushwacking trips. It feels like it should be ripped already, but it has held up admirably.

I'm about to pick one of these up and was wondering is the 20D nylon pretty abrasion resistant? I took a look at the Mammatus in a store but the athletic fit was way too narrow in the torso and shoulders. I've heard the Heathen's fabric feels super thin. Wanna make sure it's as durable as it is breathable.

I feel like I've tried on every jacket in this category shopping for the right one and nothing comes close. Super light, the fabric is very thin but has a cool texture to it so it doesn't feel like you're wearing a plastic bag.
I was initially put off by the lack of pit zips. I figured a jacket in this price range would have them. Aside from being totally waterproof (the easy part as a trash bag will do that), this thing breathes like crazy. I've even done stupid stuff with it like wear it on a bike ride in 60 degree sunshine and then keep it on in the car on the way home just to see what it does. It doesn't get clammy or damp. It just handles business.

I just got the NF Heathen jacket today. The material feels super thin (no thicker than my trash bag). Would this jacket capable of handling Michigan winter like my old NF 3 layer Gore-Tex jacket (Gore-TexPTFE/RN# 61661/CA# 30516)?

Thanks for your reply.

Hi - I was not able to figure out what type of TNF coat you previously had based on the serial number that you gave, but the Heathen is a pretty specific lightweight climbing/mountaineering jacket, and might not be the best choice for general use. Here are a few options that might serve you better for long term general use:
-North Face Mountain Light
-North Face Free Thinker Jacket
-North Face Sonic Stretch Jacket (insulated)
-North Face Modulation Jacket

Any of these would be good choices and have heavier face fabrics that would serve you better for everyday use-
Hope this helps

Not really sure why there aren’t other reviews on here...

This Jacket is a Godless Monster!

The fit is perfect, when winter gear begins to feel bulky and restrictive; the Heathen remains mobile and agile. The pockets are placed well above harness level. The rest of the details, I can basically agree with Cedar on. A perfect shell. Mine weighs 14.9 oz in a size Large.

Wet Water Ice Climbing?

When you need a true shell, and a wind shirt wont cut it, because of either a full on downpour or just abrasion resistance, this is my go to.

I think people feel this jacket lacks durability because they are used to seperate layered Jackets and not the thinner Pro-Shell material.

A simple minimalist design.

There is no inside zip pocket (maybe that's just my version) but only the two outer pockets.

Gore-Tex and light jacket

By:
March 25, 2010

Gore-Tex Pro Shell is listed as rugged. I hope it will last me as long as my old Gore-Tex (12 years and I still wear it when I work outside). This jacket is very thin; therefore I must wear a thicker fleece to keep me warm in the Michigan winter months. I'm sure I will use this jacket as my rain jacket in the spring/summer since it is breathable. :) Over all it is a beautiful jacket/fitted me great. I own a blue color with red accent around the sleeve collars and behind the main zipper. Nice!

So far I have trouble with the zipper. I have to work at it to zip up. It is possible that it is new and the type of water repellant zipper. Also both sides of the front jackets are made with thicker material therefore if the wind blows, it tends to flap open. Again it is possible that it is new.

So you think the resistance is part of the waterproofing on the zipper. I like the waterproofing zipper design because it doesn't have the fabric flap over the zipper. I have noticed the jackets with waterproofing zippers cost more too. :)

I've also noticed that there is more resistance in the zippers on the newer TNF jackets. It seems to me that its well worth the added waterproofing the new zippers offer.
