550-fill down insulation provides a very high warmth-to-weight ratio so that you stay warm without feeling weighed down
Love the color, eggplant, and the fir on hood, stylish! It is super warm, I did think it was a litlle big at first, size M, I'm a size 4, 5'3" 120lbs. Usually I'm a S but because of the other reviews went up in size. Glad I did because of the length, but arms are slightly too long that's why I didn't give it 5 stars. It is pretty puffy, but not too much. Pockets could be a little deeper with gloves on or leaving gloves in pockets they barely fit.
I really do like this jacket. Walked around the streets of NYC for 2 days last Christmas during windy, light-flurry days and was not cold. Warning: the jacket runs short. I'm only 5' tall and 110 lbs - I got a Medium because the Small was surprisingly too small. Medium fits great. USE ONLY POWDER DETERGENT to launder this jacket - called the hotline because after 2 washings, this coat lost lots of loft...and learned that LIQUID DETERGENT DOES NOT RINSE OUT OF DOWN AND MATTS IT!!! 2 more wash cycles with powdered detergent did the trick - soft and fluffy again!

I am 5'8 180lbs and I bought the black XL size, and I was worried when I read all of the reviews that were on here about the coat being too short and too small, but when my jacket arrived in the mail today I tried it on and it was not as short as I thought it was going to be but it is definitely not a jacket that covers your backside if your built like me. But besides that the jacket fits me like a glove. I was worried that I wasn't going to be able to zip it up because of my bust size but the coat has a stretchy feel to it when you put it on so it's not too tight and its not too big, so there is no marshmallow effect. But everyone has a different body type and the only advice that I could give to anybody that plans on buying this jacket is that If you are going to be worried about the length of the jacket or the size, go a size bigger than what you usually wear. The only negative thing about this jacket is that I wish they had this jacket in XXL so that it could have been just a little bit longer. And if you are looking for a jacket that hides your backside and gives you a little bit more coverage this is the wrong jacket for you. And if you are one of those people that plan on "hiding" behind your jacket for winter this is not the right coat for you as well. And I love the fact that you can remove the fur from the hood, but I like the fur because it gives the jacket so much detail. I hope the review I gave helps somebody out there because If it wasn't for all of the reviews on this site I would have never bought this jacket.
First off, I agree with what everyone else has said: ORDER A SIZE UP. Maybe even two. I normally wear an xs in North Face jackets, but I wear a medium in this jacket. It's cut very short. It's also fitted at the bottom, so if you like longer length jackets, I wouldn't buy this. It's great if you're short or have a short torso.
Moving on. This jacket is really perfect for cold weather and snow. It's warm and the hood covers my whole head without messing up my hair (hey, that's important!) The Gotham is my jacket for snow, but it's definitely not warm enough to wear by itself. I wear it with a long sleeve shirt and NF fleece jacket and then I'm all good to brave the snow. But if you live somewhere very cold (Chicago, the East Coast, etc.), I'd invest in something longer.
I bought this jacket in the navy ('Ink Blue') color, and I love it! The faux fur is very cute and matches really well with the navy. I wouldn't buy this in white if you're planning on wearing it in snow - my roommate got it in white and hers is completely dull. Also, always get these jackets dry cleaned. I've tossed mine in the dryer a few ties to fluff it up, but never washed it. I've taken the fur off before and had no issue at all taking it off. It's very cute and flattering.
Summary: I know this jacket has been 'discontinued', but I bought this from BC and love it. It's cozy and cute!
Hi I was thinking about getting this jacket for either one or both of my daughters maybe me too. My one daughter is 10 years old 5feet tall weight is about 951b, my other daughter is 8 years old she is 4feet 6inches tall about 65 ibs and I am 5 feet 7 inches and 120. What sizes do you recommend? I don't know if my 8 year old could even wear if the arms may to long. But my 10 year old is is tall with long arms. Is this a good and warm enough for snow skiing?
i can't comment on the sizes you need except that i think your 8 yr old daughter will not be able to take these women's sleeves as they will really be too long for her.
On the point of skiing, do note that this is a really short-length urban/casual wear jacket and so bear in mind it does not have the full features of a skiing jacket like a powder/snow skirt which keeps the snow from getting inside the jacket; as well as to keep the jacket from riding up during skiing and falls. So with the Gotham you will get some snow, especially on the back which will inevitably ride up (from a skiing posture) and in really cold/wet conditions that will not be too pleasant and you will get a cold/wet back eventually seeping in. Not fun in the long run. Lastly, the hem and cuffs are ribbed and do not allow for tightening/fastening like with a hem cinch-cord or Velcro closer so thats not snow-proof.
On the other hand, if you are tolerant of these issues, and also for the fact that you are not going for a long ski tour (eg. more than a few days, going into weeks) the Gotham might be ok (it will definitely keep you warm!). So it depends on your skiing comfort preferences (in the past) and how much tolerance your children will have.
For an idea of the length, the link below with a photo of the Gotham on a model might give a clue. It will stop at the waist level, whereas for a ski jacket you would be more comfortable with a hip length one.
I expected to love this jacket. But sadly, I felt it was too bulky. And other reviewers were correct - it's short as well and often rides up because of the band around the bottom. I bought a Medium and I'm 5'6" 130 lbs. I returned this and bought The North Face Women's Vegas Vest instead which, although not a full jacket, is perfect for me and looks incredibly similar to the Gotham Down Jacket - just without sleeves and the front banding. If you're okay with a lot of bulk then the Gotham will be just fine for you. I felt very constricted.
I am 5'6", 125 lbs and always wear size medium for shirts and coats. After reading all of the reviews on how short and small fitted the coat was, I still went ahead and ordered a medium from another company. The coat was too short and I quickly realized I should have followed the advise from others and ordered a size up! The other company didn't have the large, but luckily I found a large on Backcountry.com and they had it shipped out in no time. The large fit perfectly and is very flattering! The coat is also very functional and super warm! Do not follow the size chart, just read the reviews!
Hi there! I live in CA (southern) and it doesn't really get that cold here (50 degrees is super chilly for us wusses!).. but I do need a warm jacket. I won't be wearing much of a layer underneath, just a light sweater or shirt. I am 5'7, 125 lbs. Should I still get a medium? Or will a small do? All of my other NF items have been smalls. Thanks in advance!
Hi AP - if you aren't going to be wearing heavier layers, and small North Face has worked for you in the past, I would stick with the small. Hope this helps
I love love love this jacket. I just moved to the North East from Texas so I am quite afraid of the cold. I wore this jacket for the first time over the weekend when the temperature was dipping close to freezing. The minute I put it on, I was warm. It is fantastic, comfortable and looks great on. I got numerous compliments on the way it looks, while being warm! I'd definitely recommend this product.
Wow, I had looked at so many coats 4 my wife and when I found This priceless jacket.... she was taken into a world of comfort and sex appeal!! It not only feels great but enhances her appearance!! I love it. The men look twice and she feels younger.. Not that she's old. Unless you have one to wear... You won't know how good it is!! Tina,
I am 5'6, almost 5'7 with a very long torso. I weight 140. I absolutely HATE jackets that are too tight or too short. I read that almost everyone recommends ordering a size up, but given my long torso and the fact that I'd rather wear a too-big jacket than too-small, should I order the XL or would that just look ridiculous? Thanks!
This is a great jacket. It is a shorter jacket, so don't buy if you're looking for a long winter coat. I bought an extra small for my daughter and it fits her pretty good. She is 5 feet tall and about 95 pounds. It's adorable, warm, and trendy enough for the kids.
This jacket, although cute in the picture, is waaaay too short. I'm 5'8" though, it might work for a shorter person --(I usually wear small, but after reading all the other reviews I got the medium size and it was still short, had to return it :(. It is also very puffy, specially on the sleeves. But the color is beautiful (I got the chocolate one, it is very rich) and the quality is superb, as it always is with Northface products
I'm going on a weekend trip to NYC and I am in need of a jacket that would keep me warm and toasty in NYC january weather. I really like the fact that gotham down has the hood, however, I also heard the jacket is 2 inches shorter on the back compared to the aconcgua. Ladies, what would be a better choice and why? I would appreciate your response!
if you are a person that likes long coats its not for you but if you are like me and hate long winter coats that bog you down its perfect!!! it will keep you warm without weighing u down but again its supposed to be short thats how it was designed google the jacket and you'll see they fit the same way on the models wearing them
I decided to get the medium as alot of the reviews I read mentioned that it had a tendency to ride up. I spent a week in Montana bushwacking on horseback in 40 degree weather and was warm and cozy. The hood is a real lifesaver in the wind too! The fabric is super tough and saved me from being impaled on the many branches we crashed through.
I got the bue and it is just gorgeous. It's slightly shiney so it's not just a working jacket - you can dress it up too.
This is definitely a jacket for 50 degrees and below. My sister who lives in Los Angeles thinks it will be too warm for her. I live in San Francisco and it's perfect for the cold fog and windy days and nights!
I am 5'6 115 lbs. I typically wear a small in TNF, but after reading other reviews I ordered the chocolate color in both small and medium. I ended up keeping the medium because yes this jacket does run small. I love the jacket and the return process through BC was so easy! I'm very pleased.
Nikwax downwash would be a better solution, the woolite product is gentle, but Downwash is specifically formulated to keep your jacket waterproof, clean and prolong its life. If you washed it in woolite, please tell how it worked, I usually recommend that stuff for backpacks.
This is a very warm, nice coat but I HATE IT! It is wayyyyyyyy too short! I do NOT recomend it for Chicago winters. I'm 5'2 and my lower back is always cold bc the coat is too short! I'm trying to sell mine bc I rarely wore it and bought it just past winter. INVEST IN SOMETHING LONGER! Trust me!
i'm 6'3 and i don't like long, bulky coats. need one that will have long arms and atleast covering my lower back but make the coat has to stop at my waistline.
I am male 6'4" 205# and ordered the brown in xxl. It is plenty long and I may have ordered the xl. Arms are perfect, length is perfect but jacket is a little big on me. I like them a little bigger and was worried about no being long enough but it is perfect. Best jacket I ever owned and love it so much, my wife got one similar in Arctic White. Hers was large and it fits her good too.
this coat is perfect if you want a shorter one that hits at the waitline...but for sure you are at need least a large but prob xl to have arms long enough...i am 6'3" in my dreams...
My only problem with the jacket was that the sleeves were way too bulky and looked very disproportionate from the rest of the jacket. I ended up returning the jacket.
Don't get this coat.. its way too short! I have the small right now, and I'm 5'2" and 120 lbs. The sleeves and everything fit, but the length is short. I suggest a different kind.
After reading numerous reviews regarding the Gotham I decided that I would get a medium. I am petite 5'1, weigh 125 and have a pretty small chest. I read several reviews that stated that the coat runs pretty small and to order a size larger than what you usually wear. Many people listed their measurements and I thought that I should get a medium to make sure the coat fit right. The medium fits, however I think I would have preferred a small. it is kinda bulky in the stomach area (makes me feel like I look preggo) and the arms are kinda big. It still looks super cute but I think a small would have been perfect. I suppose the extra room will be good for when I have a sweater or sweatshirt on next winter. I probably should have exchanged it but decided not too because I didn't want to wait the extra time for return and then reshipping. I might suggest that someone try it on in the store nd then buy it online (unless you don't mind the return/exchange time).
I agree with Dave - I'm pretty close to your measurements and the Medium fits me very well. If you like your jackets a little bigger or you wear a lot of layers, I'd definitely go for a large.
I love the look it's a cute fitting jacket that keeps you warm and cute! I have now three jacket from the store very reasonable shipping and they always ship so fast would not buy my northface any where easle! I think that if you don't like a form fitting bombers jacket this one ant for you though it does come up a little shorter then most jackets but that's the style of the jacket! I love it : )
I adore this coat: the fit, color, construction - everything about this coat is fantastic! Other reviews lead me to order two sizes, and return one - which I did and recommend because BC's return policy is fantastic. Keep in mind this coat is the "bomber jacket" style so its naturally cropped, but it looks better on if you get a slightly snugger size. Ie., I wear a dress size 8, S/M tops and kept the size small coat - it fits perfectly and is very flattering. I can't wait to wear it again next winter!
It was my first winter in 5 years and this jacket made a huge difference.. All I needed was a long sleeve shirt and a pair of jeans my jacket and uggs in 8 degree weather and I was super comfortable.. Oh did I mention I live in Central America? Yes even with the thinnest blood this jacket is cute and warm.. I didn't have the problem of my back getting cold.. I wear long shirts so I had no problem at all.. Oh yea I got a small and it fits great and I look sexy too.. Awesome jacket..
I want to buy my daughter this coat for Christmas. She is 5'4" and 127 lbs. She is lean with a small frame but she is big busted. What size would be better suited for her Small or Medium?
I actually bought this jacket for my son's girlfriend for Christmas but it was too snug on her...I then ordered her the medium, fits perfect and instead of sending the small back I kept it for myself! I am 5'2" and I05lbs..this fits great...I love the color, brown, and it's so warm...very comfortable to wear and has great style....The company, backcountry, was great with service and delivery and I will definitely order from them again...thanks Barbara
I bought this for my wife and she loves the jacket. There is only one issue, The waist band tends to ride up specially if you are sitting down or moving a lot. Other wise it is a very nice jacket.
This fits 'relatively narrow' and is 'kinda short' so I think the bigger question is whether or not you are going to do much layering and want the extra space. It would seem that the small should be sufficient if you aren't wearing a bulky sweater or anything underneath. Hope that helps! -kp

The jacket was what she requested, Some ot the reviews said it was short, but it fit her perfectly. She wanted an extra large in case it was short in the waist and it fit the bill. She is 5'7" and of normal weight. The jacket is extremely warm and was needed in northern NJ the past few weeks. Cudos to your product.
i'm 5'0 and 115 lbs and the small fits me very well. if you're still unsure, i suggest you go to a department store and try on the coat youre looking for first. this is what i did because i was going to order a med but it was too big.
I agree with other reviewers. This jacket is too short... Way too short.. I am 5'2" and got a medium when I saw other reviewers comments about the length. I also wondered, could it really be too short? How are they defining too short? Well, too short = the muffin top area. If you sit in your car, your lower backside will be feeling the chill of the leather seats. However, it is cute. The hood is awesome, makes a statement and the ink blot blue is a great color.. almost navy but not quite.
This Jacket is short, lower back gets exposed a lot, have to keep pulling it down! But I LOVE IT anyway! I just keep pulling it down. Never have I had a coat keep me this warm! I am one that is always cold and it doesn't take long for me to get cold. Bad blood circulation! This jacket keep my upper body so warm sometimes I get hot in it! Again I LOVE IT! Now I just need the body suit!! If I could afford it I would get it!!! I would reccomend this coat to anyone as long as they don't mind pulling it down to keep the lower back covered! I don't mind doing that with mine, it is well worth it!
Having sold this jacket at a retail store, I would recommend the small. Most people find that the XS is way too short for their torso. If you want a down jacket that fits more like a belly shirt get the XS in my opinion :P
since it is above the hip , it will ride up to the waist and you have to fidget all day to keep it down. anything that is a bomber jacket inspire look will ride up .find a down jacket that hits below hip to above knee an is a good fit.Yeah don't get this. It is going to be way too short on you. Find one with a longer torso.
The North Face customer service representative instructed me to wash down jackets ONLY IN POWDER DETERGENT...liquid detergent matts the down b/c it does not rinse off of feathers.
The last time I tried washing it all the feathers clumped together inside the coat and it didn't look so good. Uh, you definitely should NOT be putting down into a washing machine. You will ruin all the insulating properties of the feathers. It really depends, you can read online how to wash down if you have a front loader, some brands recommend washing with something like a tennis ball so the feathers do not clump. Read the directions and find out if you need to buy any other product like nikwax downwash. cheers.
I bought this jacket for my girl...she's always cold! It keeps her way warm and she loves the way it fits! The detachable faux fur is great because it can be removed for snowy dayz! Extra water proof and looks so nice on!
I ordered this jacket for my daughter for her birthday. She is 5'2" and weighs 105 lbs. The fit is great but the jacket length runs short. She wanted the vintage white (which has been discontinued) so the price was terrific.
Im 5'10" with slender build, I was worried about the lenght of this jacket?? Does anyone feel it is cropped too short at the bottom or does it fit just right?? let me know!
Don't get it. I am 5'10" and 140 lbs.and I've tried this on. Let me tell you it was a JOKE. It went just past the bottom of my rib cage. That was a size large too and the rest of the jacket was way too big.
First off, I have to say that I would recommend Backcountry.com to anyone interested in NorthFace Gear. Their prices and service are top notch. I have ordered from them twice, and both times I received my merchandise very quickly (and this last time I even took them up on their Free Shipping...I thought it would take much longer, but I received my jacked within a few days!). The jacket: Although I thought from the picture that I was ordering a White jacket, it turned out to be more on the tan side. I was a bit disappointed, as I did want a pure white jacket, but I guess I should have paid more attention to the description of "Vintage White". After trying the jacket on, there was no doubt that I was going to keep it and learn to love the color! The jacket is so comfortable and warm! I have had the opportunity to try it out with some below zero weather here, and it is truly the warmest jacket I have ever worn! The only problem is that my legs are jealous! The fit is what I expected from a bomber-style jacket. I am 5'8" and 120 lbs., so I orderd a Medium and it fits great. I would definately recommend this jacket!
Medium. I'm about the same size as you and I'm a north face medium pretty much across the board.I would get a large because I'm 5'4" 140 lbs and I have had both a medium and a large. The large would cover your butt more but the Medium rides up and even some sweatshirts show underneath the coat when you try to layer.
This was the best deal I could find on this jacket! Hands down!...the live-chat was a very convenient tool. The sales rep gave me a break on shipping. I was appreciative. The jacket is the warmest I have ever owned. Love it!
Is the ink blue a pretty color? I think it looks nice in the online picture, but sometimes its hard to tell whether something will look good when you're wearing it... Also, is the jacket roomy enough to wear a sweatshirt underneath??
The ink blue is a pretty navy color. As far as layering goes, it depends what size you get. I would get a size bigger if you want to layer especially since the torso of this jacket is so short. Unless you like short jackets of course...
Does anyone own the Cherry Brown Stain color?? Hard to tell if it would be nice in person. I really love the Brownie but it's hard to find now...Thanks in advance!
My boyfriend got it for me for christmas and I ended up exchanging it for the vintage white. It was like a dark copper/bronze color. I wasn't thrilled with it, not your typical 'brown' color at all.
its puffy but not too puffy, i dont look like a total ball when i wear it, however; it is a down jacket... its supposed to be puffy, but not overly so. i wouldnt recommend wearing this if youre packing a few extra pounds... because that will make you look a little bit too puffy.
I love the jacket. I bought the brownie brown color and really like the deep rich color. I wanted a warm, more causal jacket to wear with jeans, and this jacket is perfect. Because it is a bomber style jacket, I knew it would be on the short side so I ordered a medium rather than a small. I am 5'5" and weigh 125 lbs. The jacket is very very warm and cozy. I like the way the fur zips on and off too.
Even after reading the reviews about the jacket being to short I ordered it because I thought it would be OK, it was not- way to short!!! It might be fine on someone younger that is not chasing little kids around but it rode up on me and I had to keep adjusting it- well for 5 min- then I returned it :) Backcountry was great shipped fast and no hassle return!
I loved this coat online in the Cherry Brown Stain color but once I got it and tried it on (I'm 5'4 / 110lbs) the XS fit very weird. The sleeves were overly puffy (felt like I had body builder arms!) and yes the coat is very short...I'm pretty petite and can fit into most things quite well so was so surprised that this didn't work out....very sad because I love the color and wanted a North Face coat. Would definitely not recommend.
Just received the jacket yesterday. It is a great jacket. Washing instruction inside the jacket indicate removing the hood. The hood should be hand washed, lay flat to dry. The jacket is machine wash, tumble dry. Hope you order the jacket. I am sure you wil love it.
I live in Boston, Massachusetts and it can get pretty cold, windy, slushy, snowy etc. here. This jacket was really warm and I really liked the ink blue color. It looks kinda funny in the picture on the website, but it looks really good on. I loved the furry hood, but the jacket was waaaaaaay too short. I'm 5' 4" and 110 lbs, and the jacket rode up everytime I wore it. I've also seen two girls at school who have this jacket, and the jacket's bottom was all the way up on their waists. So it's REALLY short. I got a Small, which fit really well, except for the short thing.
I ordered the Gotham jacket for my 15-year-old daughter in Ohio. It keeps her toasty warm, and she's received one compliment after another. Fits her nicely, shipped quickly, and the website was user friendly. Thanks.
I admit it, I friggin hate the snow and I hate being cold. I also hate looking like a dude marshmallow man just to keep warm in the winter. I have never been able to find a coat that keeps me warm and looks supa fly at the same time, until now. This coat rocks the kasbah! It matches my True religion jeans and my Rockstar Uggs perfectly! I have never been an outdoorsy type of girl, lets face it, I dont know which is worse, being a POW or camping in the wilderness with no room service. After I bought this coat, I have found myself browsing on this website alot.....I am even considering a camping trip this spring (OH MY GOD!!) But seriously, this is a really nice coat, I totally love wearing it. I am 5'7 115 lbs, the small fits good, maybe just a tad too big, but no complaints whatsoever. My coat came in the mail the very next day after I ordered it, AMAZING!! Also, the live chat guy was very helpful. I think his name was Mitch, but I could be mistaken. I wouldnt hesitate in the least to buy another one. Who knows, I may even buy some snow shoes and go for a trail run in the mountains behind my house, it just snowed this morning. YEAH RIGHT!!!
Purchased the coat for the winter and love it. The jacket is warm, cute, and love the fact that the fur comes off and there is still a hood. The only downside is that the coat is a little short.
I don't know what I like more... the jacket (Northface Gotham), or this website! it is just so kick-back, and a little on the funny side. As for the jacket, I got it for my 13 year old. She love love loves it. And by the way, Backcountry had the best price. $40.00 cheaper!I will definately use Backcountry.com again. the process of ordering was simple. Just an extra bonus!
I bought this jacket for myself, a Christmas present! Went skiing and my daghter ended up wearing it! We both love it. It runs true to size. And had no problem ording from Backcountry, will order again from them in the future
Bought a size medium for my daughter who is 13. The sleeves were a bit long so that was good and I thought it was a bit to crop but that is the style. She loves it and it keeps her very warm. She just wears a t-shirt & the coat on a 24 degree day and she's fine. Very light weight - would recommend this.
Bought this for my wife for Christmas and she totally loves it!!! Keeps her nice and warm and it fits her great too. Backcountry was great to work with and Northface makes awesome stuff!! Oh yeah, saved some bucks too.
I bought this jacket as a Xmas gift for my wife and she absolutely loves it!! I used the reviews and feedback here to figure out her size and it worked out perfect!! The jacket fits her perfectly and looks cool on her and most importantly its super warm!!! She's already gotten several compliments on how cute the jacket looks on her people while we're out in public. What more can I say?? Thanks BC!!! Great price, free shipping, and jacket came quick and fast...Definitely buy from you guys again!!!!
I bought this jacket for my 16-year-old daughter. She is very picky about what she'll wear, and she loves this jacket. Excellent for cold weather. Great quality. Stylish. Best of all is the superior customer service I've received from Backcountry. Quick shipping; very efficient and helpful sales & customer service people. I highly recommend this jacket and Backcountry.com.
I ordered the ink blue gotham jacket for my daughter as a xmas present and she loved it.. I payed 50.00 less than in Macys and no shipping. I would definitly order from back ccountry again.
I ordered this jacket for my daughter who is very fussy. She loved the jacket--very warm. It is short and my daughter is tiny (5'2") so it was OK for her. Based on another review I ordered her the extra small which fit OK. Excellent shipping and good price.
I ordered two jackets from Backcountry. The one I bought for my husband looks and fits great. Unfortunely, the North Face Gotham jacket I bought for myself did not look good. The arms were too puffy.
