I"m about the same height and about 170 and bought a Large and I am very happy with its fit. I think MEDIUM would be a better choice for you

As has been said before, quality on this jacket is top notch. North Face does run large, I got medium even though I'm only 5'10" & 140 because I planned to wear fleece under it, but they do run large IMHO. Perfect for the bitter cold of Europe this winter, I was quite pleased.
I imagine it would be great for skiing too, will have to take it to the mountain next trip.

It's very nice, very confortable and very warm. I have been using it at 0-4º C (minus 4ºCelsius) and it is very, very nice. I forgot, it was raining daily in Strasbourg, France and it is great!

Does the inner down jacket "become one" and zip into the larger shell as does the NF VORTEX?

Yes - you can zip the liner into the shell on this jacket just like the Vortex. It is just shown in the pictures zipped out to show what the liner looks like.

Incredibly versatile winter coat. Great fit, especially in the shoulders. As is the norm with "The North Face" products all the hardware (zippers, fasteners etc) are very high quality. The ordering process at backcountry.com was effortless and with the bonus of Bing cash back the price could not be beat. Very happy with my purchase. Highly recommended coat AND website.

I live in Chicago, and this baby keeps me warm in the below zero temperatures. I'm 6'0" 170, and the medium fits me perfectly. I haven't got a chance to go skiing yet but I can't wait to use all of it's features on the slopes.
The zip-in layer is a sleek stylish coat in itself, and I've worn that by itself in temperature around 30 degrees and it's surprisingly warm for how light it is.
Overall this is an awesome jacket, it's very windproof and warm. It fits great and it looks great too.

Good Jacket, The hood is oversized. It is hard to see when I cover myself with the hoodie. I have another Jacket from columbia same size (xl) but the hoodie is so comfortable. So I believe,NOth Face needs to adjust the size of their hoodie.
