Go for the gusto in The North Face Women’s Freedom Insulated Pant. Whether you carve the mountain on one plank or two, you need a pant that keeps you dry and warm on the gnarliest days and doesn’t restrict your movement when you go big. The Freedom Pant’s fully seam-sealed, waterproof breathable HyVent shell keeps out the wet stuff, while 60g of Heatseeker Eco insulation conserves heat on chilly slopes.

  • Free fit is cut generously through the seat, thighs, knees, and cuffs for maximum mobility and flexibility
  • Chimney Venting system improves airflow through the pant: stretch mesh in the upper section of the leg gaiter allows cool, dry air to enter the pant and lets warm, moist air exit through upper zip vents
  • Adjustable waist tab s dial in the fit
  • Articulated knees maximize your mobility
  • Gripper elastic on gaiter keeps powder out of pant, while StretchVent upper section moves with you in the bumps and park
  • Reinforced cuffs protect your pants from damage

Bottom Line: Pull ’em on, and go.

My wife and I both have a pair of these and have been very happy with their performance. The features that made me buy these pants are the chimney vents and the adjustable waist feature. My baselayer has never gotten wet while wearing these pants. These pants are warm even with the vents open. I also have the non-insulated version for warmer days. I do not wear these pants if the high temperature is much above 15-20 degrees F.

I see that there is a 2011/12 LRBC of these pants but not the regular Freedom Insulated pant. Is TNF not offering these this year?

I'm in the same boat. The LRBC are too tight around my knees. The regular Freedom ins pants were PERFECT!! I can't find any anymore in a medium short. I bought a pair of LRBC directly from TNF, but I had to send them back because of how tight they were.

According to thenorthface.com, the only versions they're offering are the LRBC insulated and non-insulated versions of this pant.

Terrific pants

By:

Fit is great, doesn't stretch out by the end of the day (or the end of a week of constant skiing). They look great, the zippers work even in Whistler-top-of-the-glacier snowstorms :)

I'm a ski racing coach and need the warmest pants that I can buy for less than $100. I maybe can do $135, but that's pushing it. I don't need other skier's standard of warm. I need pants that will keep me warm if I'm standing in two feet of powder for 8 hours while I watch my athletes race. I need pants that will see 8+ hours of rain, hail, wet chair lift seats, blizzards, and lots of kneeling in the snow to tune skis. Durable and warm. How "warm" are these pants?

I forget what brand they are and how much they cost, but see if somebody on the Ski Patrol (same basic activity requirements) can hook you up with the NSP catalog. Seems like you should also easily qualify for some nice pro deals from a lot of manufacturers.

As for these, I can't speak of them specifically, but my old TNF pants with HyVent and a thin insulation layer underneath them worked out pretty well in most conditions.

Freedom is right!

By:
January 11, 2011

I'm just almost 5'3" but my legs are a bit long for most petite sizes and I have big legs. The SHORT XL was perfect for me at my current weight. The L is perfect when I'm not a post holiday size. I love these pants because they fit closely around my hips but give my legs loads of room to bend and move. It's very difficult to find a pant that fits me but this one is a Godsend! I have the uninsulated version too, last years model in the smaller size and love those as well.

Cathy, I probably can't help much with the sizing except to give it my best guess but I think the Large Short would be the way to go. I can tell you for sure that they are plenty warm for the slopes.

Never get cold or wet

By:
February 3, 2011

Love these pants! Worn them several times in waist deep powder, ice, and in normal conditions and never once have gotten cold or wet! Even in 4 degrees and crazy wind you can get a little toasty if you are wearing a base layer (I have the insulated ones but still wear a base because I get cold easily), but it's no problem with the vents - just unzip then and you are good to go. Good pocket room, and they fit nice too. Not bulky at all but plenty of room to move around. I am 5'8' with longer legs so I ordered the medium long and they are perfect. They do run a tad bit, but they have and elastic waist and velcro that you can pull to make them tighter. It's also nice to keep your shirt/upper layers tucked snuggly in place! They sit up above your hips so they are not low riders. I prefer that so they work for me. Have several other pair and you just can't beat these. These are my go to standard ski/board pants!

Great, easy pants

By:
January 1, 2011

Skied two days in 7 degrees in these with only one base layer long johns underneath and they were toasty. Usually my legs get very cold, I didn't even get a chill. I'm not sure how they did it, as they feel very lightweight-almost thin- but they really couldn't be warmer.

great ski pants--a little big

By:
December 20, 2010

These pants have kept me super warm the past few times I've skied in them in icy Maine. They ventilate pretty well so I'm excited to see how they perform in Colorado when I go home for the holidays.

I finally settled on the Petite Small and they're still a little big (I'm 5'2" and about 115lbs) but i guess that just means more room for extra layers!

Awesome for shawties...

By:
December 3, 2010

I'm petite and curvy, 5'0"/120 lbs (and wear a 28 in jeans) so I always have a difficult time finding pants of ANY sort, but these totally rock. Who knew any manufacturers made ski pants in petite? I bought a size small in the short length; these fit in all the right places and aren't baggy at all, but still have ample room to fit a pair of Patagonia "expedition weight" long underwear underneath, which I usually only wear while working as a liftie (otherwise I'd probably overheat while skiing.) Hope this review helps!

roomy in my view

By:
February 6, 2011

I love these pants.
I gained weight this year and needed warmer pants too so I got the XL Short. I'm 5'3" and carry my weight below the hips; big legs, pretty round rear-end. I wanted room in my pants to bend and for air to circulate and these pants are that. They are remarkably warm, light and leave plenty of room to move. The waist adjustment allows me to tighten them when moving and loosen them when I have to sit to drive. When I get back to the weight where last year's uninsulated Large fits (same style), I'll still use these with a belt or suspenders for the coldest weather. The leg vents are excellent for cooling off and the fit around the middle is trim enough that I look fine with a fitted top when I'm indoors. I wear only skivvies and socks under them and have never had cold legs, even when my fingers were freezing and my layers above the waist weren't quite adequate.

Too Big

By:
February 3, 2011

I wear a 4-6 Petite. I ordered an XS and they were at least 3" too big everywhere. Other than that, they seemed typically well-made and functional North Face quality.
