Why We Like The Freethinker FUTURELIGHT Jacket

The North Face's Freethinker FUTURELIGHT Jacket is one of our favorites to wear touring the backcountry on a powder day. Touting The North Face's FUTURELIGHT membrane, this Freethinker offers reliable waterproofing for stormy riding, and it's extremely air-permeable to keep us comfy when we're hustling up the skin track under heavy snowfall. This uncanny combination of heavy-duty waterproofing and extreme breathability also packs small so that we can tour comfortably under sunnier skies.

Great fit and performer.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I love how this coat has evolved over the years. It's the lightest version I've ever owned and certainly the most fashionable. The blue is great. From a function standpoint, it sheds water and blocks wind. Plus, the hood actually fit over my helmet. My only two callouts are that I was surprised there's no powder skirt and that it's not the best coat on really cold days-as the material is so thin and lightweight. I tend to feel it in my shoulders. Overall, a great buy. Super lightweight, and stylish.

Freethinker for the win!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Loving the Freethinker so far. Primary use is backcountry touring, morning bootpacks on the pass and riding the resort on the weekends. I generally ride 5-6 days a week so it has been getting some good use. The jacket is lighter than many hard shells that I've owned. In my opinion this provides many pluses....easily packed away without taking up too much room in the pack, soft and subtle feel, seems to be highly breathable when hiking, plenty of room for layering on the cold days. The jacket is a little bit longer than I am used to (freeride fit) but the softness and stretch make it a non issue riding chairs. Have been out on plenty of cold days (below 0) and the jacket has been great when layered appropriately. Will see how it holds up over time. If you are looking for a a tech featured jacket that is backcountry specific but can handle the resort...The Freethinker is one to look into.

Hoping the new version is as good as the old one.

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Nice jacket I really like the cut and the fact the cuffs are a little longer to tuck into your gloves. Time will tell if futurelight holds up like my old gore-tex version of the free thinker. One suggestion is I'd like them to bring back the hand pockets on this. It's fine if they aren't useful when you have a pack on, but when you don't have a pack they would be nice.

Amazing technical shell!!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Love this shell, great at keeping the weather out, breathes amazingly well and has great stretch and mobility!!! I wear this for backcountry and at the resort and it works great for both. Love that they included pit zips to dump heat as well.

Surprised about lack of outside hand pockets...

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've never seen a jacket with no hand pockets, I'll have to go up to the ACAD or brigandine, I just wish those had more color choices and a powder skirt with a hook for TNF snowpants like old versions. Looks like I'll have to get a previous season brigandine

How Can You Never Change the Weak Designs

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Had first gen. Futurelite after TNF booted Goretex from Alpine wear at TNF. Awaiting a response from Warranty and cringing because the same design from 3-4 years ago remains. Coat was recalled due to bad proprietary TNF fabric but no one told me. Breast pockets let items sit down at waist level. Feels horrible to have all that gear in a bunch at your waist. Design something new and innovative, please. Perhaps like the old Freethinker , 3 layer Gore Tex coat??
