When your light-and-fast expedition brings you above snow line, ditch those heavy and bulky synthetic layers and grab The North Face Elysium Down Jacket. The Elysium’s DWR-treated fabric and 700-fill down insulation is there to shed light precipitation and keep the BTUs next to your skin. And weighing in under 1.5 pounds, this jacket definitely won’t slow your pace when it’s stored in your pack.

  • 700-Fill down offers excellent loft, good rebound from compression, and a warmth-to-weight ratio that surpasses any synthetic insulating material
  • 20D Nylon shell fabric with DWR treatment helps repel water and maintain necessary breathability for the down insulation
  • Elastic cuffs and hem cinch cord help block out wind and cold
  • Performance fit designed to move with your body
  • Summit Series design means it’s made for athletic pursuits in harsh environments

Bottom Line: If you’re running a summit fever, at least you can trap the heat.

Decent jacket --- though 'Summit Series' name is a misnomer

Not a bad jacket. However, the chest, sides and arm are NOT baffled construction, and are instead sewn-through; the back is baffled though.
This jacket is intended as a midlayer, to be worn over a baselayer and possibly a light fleece, and under a shell. Definitely not a stand alone piece.

The 'Summit Series' is a bit of a misnomer from North Face. With a name like that, you'd think it would be bomb-proof. In fact it's designed for active use, to be worn when you are actually summitting a peak, not sitting in your tent or at basecamp. There's just not enough insulation for that.
As an example of this, I was plenty warm in 5* F weather with a t-shirt underneath when moving furniture from an unheated storage shed into the back of my pickup for 2-3 hours. That same night, when walking from the parking lot to the library on campus, which is about a 15 minute walk, in 10* F weather, I was very cold with just my t-shirt under. So again, desngned to keep your warm if you're being very active.

I also find that many North Face products run short in your normal size, and if you want extra length you have to size up, and are then left with a HUGE jacket. This has been true in the Denali WindPro and this jacket.

Pretty sharp

pros: very versatile from the amount of fill, waist can be pulled tight to lock in heat when you're winter camping or opened up to vent on warmer days. Packs down pretty well and with the pertex quantum shell material it's about as light as its going to get with the amount of fill it has. Also I get lots of comments on the colors (older model of this jacket, blue/kiwi green)

Cons: I noticed that sometimes the waist cinches would work their loose, not huge, but annoying at times
