Double Headed Toad 44 Bx Tent 4-Person 3-Season

The North Face made the Double Headed Toad 44 Bx Tent large enough for four adults, yet it weighs under eight pounds. Divvy up the pieces, and you have one reasonable little load. The North Face made this backpacking tent incredibly easy to set up—the easy-clip poles and color coded pitch system mean that even after that dinnertime Nalgene of wine disappears, you can still figure it out easily. A full mesh canopy keeps things from getting muggy, and the abundant gear loops and overhead pockets give every beanie, watch, and headlamp a place to hang. To go uber-ultra-light, pitch the rainfly only.

Bottom Line: Three seasons, four people, and very little weight to carry. Sounds like a party.

great tent!

this tent is seriously awesome, for 4 people it really can't be beat. just make sure that split the tent up with your buddies if your doing a long hike or else youll regret it. the poles are mindblowing, the gear cave is huge and the tent is big enough to steam-roll your helpless buddies that are zipped up!

Great 4 person tent! TONS OF ROOM! & VESTIBULES!

By:
February 2, 2010

I love this tent. the roomiest 4 person tent i've ever owned. the setup is so painless and the poles snap into place sooo fast. everything is color coordinated and has several storage pouches on the inside. can also hang a lantern. the vestibules are PERFECT for storing your gear outside the tent without it getting rained on and you can also fit your dog out there so he doesn't wake everyone up at night. excellent tent. super high quality. i'd also recommend getting the footprint if you're gonna be on rocky terrain.

haakon, set up is a cinch. poles are easily snapped into place and fit together seamlessly to prevent snagging, you don't have to have the nest in place first, it can be used just with the tarp. also the vestibule is big enough to cook in if you have a jet boil or something. hope this helps

Hey there,

I'm looking for a 4 person tent, and this is the one i like the most after some internet reviewing.

I'd really appreciate a few questions answered as I cannot find all the info I need to be sure that "this is the tent I'm gonna buy":

1. How's the set up? Do you have to put up the "inner" tent first and then the rest?

2. Is the vestibule large enough for cooking?

Thanks in advance.

wasn't that pic from when we hit up the "B" in Bountiful in the Samurai?..haha..ah man...a crazy rainstorm came down on overnight and the whole place was filled with water..the 3 of us and our german shorthaired pointer were all unscathed by the torrential downpour.

Just camped with this over the w/e w/ two adults and a 115 lb. chocolate lab. We all fit in there fine with a little bit of gear...we each had our own sleeping pads also (dog too). The dog is big but the adults (myself and my wife) are small to medium size. Four 6+ ft. adults could fit but it WILL be tight. Three adults with a little bit of gear IN the tent is more like it if you want a couple inches of "comfort zone" between people (leave the gear out and, oila, more space!). Four adults will be snug and, more likely than not, your gear will be left outside in the vestibule.

A similar design with a bit more room would be the SD Lightning XT-4 but your spending a lot more $$ for just a little more space. Might be worth it if you have the dough but I'll be sticking with the TNF Double Headed Toad. Good amount of space and the price was right. With 3-4 adults, weight shouldn't be an issue as you can split it up. The poles and fly are the weight hogs. The mesh canopy is very light. Enjoy!

i've had 4 plus a dog in this tent AND all our gear. with 2.5 inch sleeping pads. if you don't mind smelling your buddies' feet/ ogre breath than you're good. it can fit all 4. we also had space to set up our laptop and watch a movie where everyone could see it.

Amazing!!! Aww to be dry and roomy!

By:

First trip we took this on was a trip to the tetons. My fiance and I split the load to where we both only carried about 4.5 lbs of tent. We went 9 miles backcountry and spend the night on a glacier. It rained all night and was chilly but we never got wet. One down fall is it collects condensation a little bit but we did have 4 people in this tent and it was very cold and then warm in the morning so it comes to be expected. Being dry is all we could ask for from our past tent. Tent is extremely roomy, with 4 people in it there was still a lot of room and we werent crowded at all. Amazing tent for 2 people....all the room in the world for our puppy! Love it!!!!!

2 people + 2 dogs = perfect

By:
October 6, 2010

Added this tent to the car camping arsenal, and I couldn't be happier. I have a similar designed TNF tent for backpacking (vario 23), and wanted something larger to fit in our full size inflatable mattress, 2 people + 2 dogs. This is absolutely perfect. Interior height is great, while still keeping a low profile for wind. 2 huge vestibules and round zippered doors, make for a ton of storage and easy 1-handed opening. Option to pitch the fly and groundcloth makes it super versatile. And, for 3-4 person backpacking trips, dividing the tent up among your friends, makes for a pretty light pack. The only thing is the stakes included are just basic, typical with most tents I've owned. Do yourself a favor and upgrade to some beefy tent stakes like this: http://www.backcountry.com/msr-groundhog-tent-stake-kit / But still I give it 5 stars regardless, you'll be stoked with this tent!

Great Tent for summer camping!

By:
February 27, 2011

Yes. did A LOT of research before replacing my old 2 Person Tatonka (from Germany). I needed a tent mostly for summer camping with my boys. In Brazil, summer equals very hot, humid and, yes, lots of mosquitos. It had to be big enough for me and my two little boys. I decided to go for the NF Double Headed Toad and have no regrets or whatsoever. The tent is a bit at the heavy side of the curve, but the space is huge. Two big doors. Lots of space. Everything I needed. It is very good for summer camping, specially when comparing to the other tents I see around. Very good indeed. If weight is not crucial, JUST GO FOR IT! In the picture you see my 6 Year Old boy, "Pipo". This picture was taken at Itamambuca Eco Resort (Ubatuba, Brazil). Great place, BTW!

Set up camp just below the peak, the tent was awesome even with wind gusting around 50-60 mph and temps in the 20's. This tent is comfy with 3 people but a little cramped with 4, I agree that if you had 4 your gear would definitely be outside.

Good tent but not so family friendly

By:
May 7, 2010

Great tent if you want to hike and carry it and want space. Not so good for family car camping. The entrances are round and dont open all the way down to the ground which makes entry and exit difficult if you dont want step/sit on the swell.
