The hardshell hugs the softshell and then they both hug you.

The California Condor would have gone extinct were it not for some pretty drastic conservation measures. Extinction might be in your near future, too, if you if you decide to go outside for extended periods this winter without a jacket. With its 3-in-1 design, fleece liner, and waterproof HyVent fabric, The North Face’s Condor Triclimate Jacket is designed to keep you warm and off the endangered species list.

  • The North Face designed this 3-in-1 jacket to be worn multiple ways—the shell alone, the liner alone, and both the shell and liner together
  • The shell uses waterproof breathable HyVent fabric to shed outside precipitation and to allow excess internal heat and moisture to escape
  • Apex Climateblock Softshell liner jacket is highly water and wind resistant, yet still maintains a comfortable level of breathability—well-suited for winter trekking, skiing, and snowshoeing
  • Apex liner jacket also provides moderate insulation for outdoor activities —pair the softshell with additional base layers when the temperature takes a nosedive
  • Fully adjustable hood cinches tight around your head (for when the wind and snow are really howling) but is also removable for when the weather clears up

Fine for the city, not the wilderness

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I've had this jacket for a few seasons and can say that it did not perform up to my standards. I liked the ease of use zipping the inner and outer shell and the inner shell is fairly warm. However I had the outer shell fail me when i needed it most: in a driving sub-arctic downpour in the northern latitudes of Iceland. The wind just pushed the water right through the HyVent fabric. Maybe I expected too much from this jacket but I feel like the North Face has begun to focus more on it's branding than the performance of it's gear.

You can do better

The shell is just fine except for the Velcro strips. I actually returned this jacket because the Velcro just deteriorated. I couldn't bring myself to get a full refund because I wore the jacket for two seasons so I got a replacement. The interior jacket is not usable. It does not slide on and off without difficulty. I would just buy the shell and put a Patagonia jacket inside ( the zippers are the same). I am also disappointed there is not an inside pocket or a pocket for an iPod. While the jacket does keep you dry the hood does not size well unless you are wearing a helmet.

All Purpose 3-1 With Apex Fleece

Terrific shell, with added bonus of the Apex fleece...great combo. Its smaller than the other 3-1's i have from TNF, not sure why? Triumph green is great colour, close to what you see in the image onsite...the softshell liner sleeves run long when worn separately (no biggie)...overall TNH quality!

That's very useful

The size is very suitable for my husband. The quality of the North Face is well.

It does run small

I ordered the Medium for my husband (he usually wears medium jackets) and it ended up being small. I returned it and got the Large and fits perfectly. I recommend getting one size bigger to the one you usually wear. Otherwise, it is a great jacket and Back Country's return policy was a breeze to work with and they refunded me very quickly! Very happy with the website!!

You will want to go with XL, anything bigger than that you will have arm and skirt length issues.

Condor, all in black.

I am 6'03", 230 lbs, and have a 44" chest. I purchased an XL and love it. I tried it on with an Under Armour hoodie on underneath and it was a little sung but the hoodie was bulky.

I was a little concerned given previous reviews, but liked the jacket enough to go out on a limb anyways. I am glad I did. The zippers work great and I like the mesh pockets up high and close to the chest region. The hood is primarily zipped on with two snaps up closer to the main zipper which makes it very secure. The base layer fleece is also very heavy duty and I would feel comfortable wearing it alone, it doesn't look like a cheap rip off of a North Face. It is a solid fleece made of a nice wind stopping material. I had my last TriClimate jacket for ten years. I expect this one will do the same.

A small will probably work for you. You can also compare your measurements to the sizing chart below the price.

I have the same issue. On my second jacket now. The zipper gets stuck on the outer layer and when I tried to undo it, it snapped twice. I will try and get it fixed this time and see if it sticks next season.

I'm piggybacking on Will's question...I'm looking for a "do it all" solution, since I live in TN, where it doesn't get all that cold, but I occasionally make it up north and out west. I'm 6'00", 190 lbs, with a 42 jacket size and medium build. I'm not currently packing a belly, nor do I plan to.

This looks like a good solution for all-day exposure to cold and wet e.g. tailgaters up north, and for my occasional ski trips out west. I've been wearing the same Edelweiss parka for 16 years , and it's time for a change. I'd appreciate thoughts on sizing / utility. I do not anticipate extreme weather, just garden-variety cold and wet, with the possibility of colder and dry on those rare occasions I get to head for the mountains. This jacket would not need to deal with extreme conditions, nor any outdoor activities beyond skiing or standing around staying warm and dry.

Thanks for the input.

I love my North Face tri jacket. In the spring and fall I usually just wear the fleece, except if its raining I will wear the shell. Im up in New England and for the winter I wear the fleece and shell together and my upper body never feels cold. During activities I find im actually unzipping the fleece because im sweating in it, and thats with just wearing a Tshirt underneith. Plus I find it is very durable, I wear it on construction sites and if it gets dirty it cleans very easy in the washing machine.

Great Jacket/Sizing Issues

After lots of consideration, I purchased this jacket for my husband's birthday. Beautiful color, great quality of workmanship. My husband is 6'3, not at all heavy at 175 lbs. The sleeve length was good on his long arms and there was plenty of room in the waist, but the shoulder width was narrow and the jacket was tight across the chest from arm pit to arm pit. He tried it on with only a flannel shirt, so it really would never work with a sweater. Sigh. Very strange, since he's pretty lightly built. Beautiful jacket with sizing issues.

I agree with the medium. I am 5 11 ish and about 175 lbs and a large is quite big on me. Now if you are planning on a big sweater underneath, you may want a large

I'm looking to purchase this jacket but i'm not sure what size to get. I'm debating between a medium and a large. I am 5'10 and 145 pounds. If anyone could help me out it would be much appreciated

Responded on

a medium may be a little snug so if you live in cold climates with a few extra layers you may want the extra room from a large
