Great softshell

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I know, I know---The North Face is what all the trendy kids wear. Believe it or not, though, they do make some great gear, and the Chromium Thermal Softshell is one of these.

The fit is perfect for my 5'11" 200lb frame, (I've got a little Pillsbury Doughboy going around the midsection) not too tight, not too loose. You can easily throw a light baselayer under it if you need to. The jacket sheds light rain and snow well, but you'll want a rain shell when the heavens really open.

Warmthwise, I found the fleecy interior does a good job for temperatures down into the low 30's, and the windproof fabric helps keep the warmth in. I had just a T shirt on underneath and was warm enough. I put off a lot of body heat, however, so your mileage may vary. It's probably safe to say that you will be fine with temperatures into the high 30's or low 40's.

The jacket breathes well. I ran a few laps around the neighborhood while wearing it in temperatures around the mid 40's and didn't get too warm. Some pit zips would have been nice to improve ventilation but it wasn't a huge deal for me.

To sum it up, this is a great jacket from The North Face. The only gripe I have against it would be the lack of pit zips, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me.

Missing a classic!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

I'm surprised they did away with the black jacket with white logo. I've had the Chromium jacket that is Black with a White logo for some time and was just checking to see if it was available still. The jacket itself is great and I love it! I hope they bring back the classic Black/White combination.
