Great jacket for high 20's and 30's. Good amount of insulation and keeps the wind at bay. I'm 6' 175lbs, large fit perfectly.

Quality jacket. Water resistant. The only drawback is it does run a little small.

North Face quality for sure. Blocks the wind and all around good fall jacket. One word of caution, order the next size up if you plan to layer under the jacket.

I bought this for my husband for christmas and he LOVES it! I bought him the asphalt grey heather and he has received many complements on the pattern. He says its warm and wind resistant. The water beads right off of it. Great jacket, especially for the price.

This is my favorite jacket in my closet. It fits well and feels great. It's warm and water repels right off it. You must have one of these.

Pros:
- Looks cool
- Warmth without bulk
- Deflects moisture, but breathes
Cons:
- Sleeves seem long
I bought this for a quick trip to the midwest. I needed a new jacket for random cold, windy or rainy days. Said days being in SoCal, it'd make no sense to drop $300 on a consumer grade spacesuit.
I just needed a shell I could throw over some other layers, to keep out the piercing Chicago wind.
The jacket worked out great. I wore it over another jacket, street clothes, and some thermals, and never felt the chill (and I'm a pampered lightweight when it comes to weather). When I started to sweat during the plane ride, I pulled off the shell, rolled it up, and threw it into my carry-on without difficulty.
As some have mentioned, the sleeves run long for the size. I figure it's good for overlapping them with gloves, or warming up your hands without gloves. Outside of that scenario, though, I had to cinch up the velcro on the cuffs, and the stiffness of the sleeves compressed that way gets uncomfortable after a while (e.g. a dull, uneven pressure on my steel-banded wristwatch wasn't a lot of fun).
Overall, though, the jacket met my expectations. The lining is soft/warm, the shell resists wind and moisture, and it's not some grave ultimatum whether to take it with me when I head out, like it would be with heavier jackets.

This jacket is surprisingly warm. Comfortable down to about mid 20s then I recommend layering with at fleece vest or light fleece jacket. I bought this with the Khumbo fleece and together they are incredibly warm. The material is really windproof, works amazing. I highly recommend this jacket for climates with mild winters. I live in Northern VA and it is the only Jackt I need for the winter season.

I love this Jacket. The quality is superb and everything is made to the highest standards. The only drawback for me was finding the right size. Bought MED at first but felt too tight, exchanged for LARGE - fits loose. i would like this jacket to be with a more fit to body forms nature. Definately recomment buying it if it fits you well

the top of Stowe, VT was windy that day. All I needed was this jacket and two layers to keep me warm. Not one time did the wind chill get to me.

I gave this coat as a gift to my son in law, he can't stop thanking me for the coat. Loves it's warmth, stops the wind and is lightweight. I have multiple Apex jackets and thought this coat was an upgrade. Of course, the backcountry live help person was a HUGE help and gave me some other excellent options to choose from. My past satisfaction with North Face products made me gravitate to the Chromium. Thanks backcountry for all your help and great prices.
better than the bionic

i was given an apex bionic and it fit great, as long as i didn't wear a heavy layer underneath. i returned the bionic for the cromium in a larger size so i could fit a fleece under it for warmth. both jackets aren't very warm but i felt like the cromium is a little heavier and had a better fit. this is a great all around jacket.

How does the "finish" (or texture) of this jacket compare to the Apex line? Really like the Apex jackets, but wouldn't mind something warmer.

it has the same soft shell (apex) type of exterior and a nice fleece interior lining. definitely wind proof.

The Chromium is not zip-in compatible. You could wear the Khumba under it, but you won't be able to zip it in.

Backcountry store or any one else know which jacket is warmer? The above jacket or the North Face Apex Mckinley? If one of these jackets are warmer how much if you know?
Jay Alter
Member since
The Chromium is warmer than the McKinley due to the thicker fleece in the Chromium. The McKinley offers the same wind/water resistance but not as much warmth.
If you've ever owned or tried on The North Face Apex Bionic jacket, that's basically what the McKinley feels like. However, if you decide to buy the McKinley, keep in mind that it also has a slimmer fit.

I bought the The North Face Chromium Thermal Softshell Jacket - Men's, I love it but must run small cut for North face, it was a little tight so I returned, then I saw this soft shell The North Face Apex Mckinley Softshell Jacket - Men's. Does anyone know which would be warmer? I am looking for a soft shell I can put on a warm base layer under and wear skiing. So I need the warmest they have in North Face.
