Perfect Snow Boots
This is my second pair of these boots. The first time I bought a half size smaller and they fit perfect. This time when I was reading reviews I decided to order my normal size. They feel exactly the same. I do not find that the back rubs like others have stated. I wear them all winter long. We make at least one trip to Breckenridge skiing and I wear them the whole time with no issues. I love these boots that is why I now have two pairs. A+++
The North Face
shoes are very good.
I love these boots! They are comfortable, warm and dry. I have not had any of the problems mentioned by other reviewers. I bought these last winter to replace another pair of boots that did rub the back of my legs raw, but have not had any problems with my Chilkats.
Way too narrow and stiff...
I've never thought of myself as having super wide feet (in fact i've never ordered a size wide shoe ever), yet my feet are neither tiny or super narrow either, but these boots were extremely narrow and painful to try to walk around in for more than a few minutes. They were completely squishing my toes and foot bones all together and the uppers were terribly stiff and uncomfortable which pinched and hurt my ankles, not fun! To be fair, they were fairly warm for the short time i had them on, and I have read that they do pack out ~.25"-.5" after wearing them for a while, but i didn't have the pain tolerance to try...lol...
This is the third pair of North Face's shoes/boots i have tried this winter and they have all been way too narrow and small, and in one of the cases they did not allow for med. to high arches and that part of the boot (Janey Boot) was way too painfully tight across the top of my foot.
I used to have a pair of NF's trailrunners a few years back and i loved those, so, i don't know if things have been changing in the footwear deptartment there lately, but North Face either needs to make their shoes a bit wider so real people can fit their feet into them, cause we also want to wear winter socks with them, or they need to offer them in a wide width as well as their regular width...I love all of NF's outerwear, jackets/coats, backpacks, etc...they have gotten it right in those departments, I really wish they could adjust this one...
I'd like advice on a good jacket for hiking...
I'd like advice on a good jacket for hiking Macchu Pichu; has to be light, be able to withstand rain and temps from 30 degrees to 85 or so degrees. Any suggestions?
I like the McMurdo better
After seeing the Chilkats I decided I would rather buy the McMurdo boots. Unfortunately I cannot find them anymore since winter has ended. So, I will start early this coming Fall! :-)
Great snow boots
I bought these boots to replace my Columbia Bugabos whose rubber area split. I had absolutely no problems breaking in my Chilkats compared with the old Columbia boots. I read other reviews on these boots and followed the advice to get one size larger; they fit perfectly. My only problem is that my heel area tends to slide around a bit but that happened with my ski boots a long time ago also; I apparently have narrow heels. Anyway, the Chilkats are great and I use them to walk my Scotties to my garden plot which is muddy right now. For long hikes I probably would prefer boots that would fit more snugly around my heel area plus these boots would be too hot I think without snow. I bought my Chilkats for snow and ice really. Great boots.
These are heavy duty...good quality boots. I ordered a half size up which was perfect for me. They are not the most comfortable boots for hiking, and I really would not recommend them for a long hike. I walk to work, about a mile, and these are perfect for that. Go right through snow & slush while keeping your feet warm & dry.
I love mine! I was a little hesitant because of the reviews, but I still got it! Definitely get a 1/2 size bigger. I got a whole size bigger, which is perfect for me because i wear thick socks in the winter and these shoes are well padded inside, making it tighter. They don't hurt my ankles, but then again I don't go hiking in them like some of the other ladies in here. I just go out and play in the snow with my sons!!! They are wonderful and I love them.
I find these boots to be incredibly comfortable....they keep me nice and toasty (and dry)...toes get cold occasionally but my toes normally get cold no matter what. I ordered 1/2 size up (normally an 8 and ordered 8.5) and they are perfect with room for really thick socks or doubled socks.
I would definitely recommend them...I read a lot about other customers finding these to be very uncomfortable but I disagree completely...
I have been wearing Chilkats for 10 years. The same pair with leather uppers. They are finally packed down so I decided to purchase another pair. The new pair with suede uppers although they fit beautifully when I hiked in them my feet sweat and the boot simply retained the moisture. Don't get me wrong I sweat in my 10 year old boots as well but they seem to be capable of breathing better. I removed the inserts from the new boots and let them air dry in a warm environment for two days. They are still wet to the touch inside. Crazy. If they can fix this issue I will buy another pair but in the meantime they are being returned.
Chilkats Boot - Women's
Great pair of boots. I haven't owned winter boots in a long time and I wanted a pair that would keep my feet both warm and dry. Not only did I get both of these things, but they're very comfortable. I would highly recommend these boots to anyone.
So far this winter this is the best purchase I've made for staying warm and comfortable, and able to get out and hike, snowshoe and still do every day tasks like drive a standard vehicle and walk around town. Very functional boots, great features like a notch to strap snowshoe strap tighteners (not sure of the technical term for what they are) around your heel, and very warm. They break in quickly from my experience. I never had the heel pinching problem mentioned thankfully. Only problem is that they do not tighten enough by pulling the laces, I have slim legs, so I have to adjust them as I hike. Love the boots.
Not the most comfortable boot
I agree with the posts about these boots hurting ankles. I found if I wear a higher sock it gives extra padding and it helped. Also they do run small so definetely go up a half a size.Wore them snowshoeing yesterday and my feet were very warm. Its going to take some time to really break these boots in. ( On the upside I get a ton of compliments on how cute they are)
Nice looking boot, but only good for sitting on the couch! I've broken in a lot of boots and hiked a lot of miles in my day, and I deem these boots un-break-in-able. I went for four hikes in snowy woods with these and was nearly in tears on my last trip out. (The first couple of hikes weren't as bad -- the pain increased gradually.) I made it less than 100 meters from the car and limped back to the car to go home and get my old boots. But since the hounds were pressuring me, I decided not to lace the top grommets (sp?) instead. This enabled the dogs to go about 1/4 km with me before I had to go home. The front of this boot is so stiff that the base of my shins above my ankles are bruised. Yes, perhaps I tried too hard, but I really wanted them to work. The foot bed fits fine. I wear an 8.5 or 9 and I ordered a 9 and had a touch of room to spare. They are snuggly warm. Oh -- it is also hard to pull the laces tightly over the top of the foot because of the stiffness of the boot.
The style of the Chilkat was just what I was looking for in a boot to work outside and be able to go to town. I ordered a size up like I usually do in a boot but it was too narrow around the ball of the foot. I found them very tight. I tried to wear them but after going for a walk and to town I was in terrible pain. I hated to give them up but I did not see that they were going to give any with use and the snow was comining. Unless you have a narrow foot I could not recommend these boots to anyone. Great looks terrible fit.
I had a front zip pair of northface (which they dont seem to make any more so maybe that is a sign). I had a problem with my heel slipping in them when I went snow shoeing, thus I bought them in the lace up version...def an improvement. My heel no longer slips, they have good ankle support and are as warm and comfy and dry as my old pair, which i still keep for causal wear on snowy tahoe nights and after snowboarding.
To prevent ankle bite, I tie the lower portion tight and put in a half knot around the eyelet to secure the snugness and then keep the top ankle portion less tight.
I bought mine a size smaller than usual ad they fit great with a thin pair of socks (which is all that is needed because they are so warm.
Caused pains in the ankle
Bought these boots for my girlfriend. Great look, stability, and function but they caused her pain and discomfort around her ankles. Had to return for refund.
Bought these as a gift for the wife, she absolutely loves them. We live in New England, and she uses them for her commute to and from work, and finds them comfortable and dry. Would have liked to try them on...but overall, a good boot.
