Just like you'd do it.
When the folks at The North Face design a piece of outdoor apparel, they don't mess around. Even something as simple as a pair of shorts becomes an exercise in design perfection. The North Face Chain Ring Shorts are a perfect example. If you were designing a pair of riding shorts for yourself, you would make them just like this.
The most important feature in a mountain bike short is a removable chamois liner. The removable liner makes the short ultra-versatile because you can wear them together as a bike short, without the liner as a regular short, or you can wear the liner with any of your other shorts. If ultimate versatility isn't enough, The North Face also loaded the Chain Ring Short with mesh thigh vents to cool you down in a hurry, a high back waistband for total coverage in the riding position, and a seamless crotch gusset forunlimited range of motion.
The North Face was also kind enough to provide reinforced stitching and bar-tacking throughout the shorts so you wouldn't have to replace them in a couple months. The mesh-lined hand pockets are nice, so you can hold onto your valuables without having to add a bunch of materials, and there's even a sunglass wipe include in the right hand pocket to clean up your sweat-soaked sunnies.
The North Face Chain Ring Short comes in even sizes 28 through 38 and is available in Black, High Rise Grey, or Graphite Grey.

A lot of work
- Familiarity: I've used it several times

Great shorts but its a pain lining up the inner layer with the shorts each time you put them on. Its also not really a removable liner.

Just got these shorts in the mail. They look like great shorts. Almost everything I was hoping for except for one little thing: it's not a removable liner! You'd have to permanently cut the sewn loops just to get the chamois out! I have no idea how they can advertise this as a removable liner. By that logic, I could cut the liner out of some swim trunks and call them shorts.
Otherwise, the sizing is accurate, the quality seems good and the materials are nice. A little long for my taste. I'm 6'0" and they run over my knees, rubbing whenever I bend my legs. That makes them a less than ideal biking, hiking or lifestyle short, but that's a bit of personal preference.
Comfortable, light weight, and durable

As my only pair of bike shorts currently, I've used these almost every day for the last month and a half (washing often of course). With a few nicks to the material, they've held up great;taking a beating from bushes and dirt. They're a great short for biking and everyday use, and dry very quickly as well. The chamois is connected but can be detached by simply cutting the fabric loops that connect it to the shorts themselves. Well worth the price. I'd easily buy another pair or two.
