    3.5 inches of fast-drying fury.

The North Face Flight Series Men's Better Than Naked Split 3.5in Running Short sports stretchy FlashDry mesh panels to keep you running comfortably whether you're halfway through a marathon or a grueling training run. These FlashDry panels also wick moisture and dry quickly to keep you prime from the first mile all the way to the last. An integrated crepe liner offers next-to-skin comfort while a bit of elastane works with the 3.5-inch inseam to ensure a wide range of motion for sprinting to the finish line. A zippered security pocket stores an energy gel or house key.

    Closer to perfection

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times
    • Fit: True to size

I tried a pair of the PRIOR model BTN shorts in the longer length but had some issues with chafing. That said, I love the fast-drying material. I had been using Patagonia Strider Pro shorts b/c I love the pockets. The pockets on the BTN were a bit wimpy in comparison (cant fit a phone or a balled up shell. Again, this was the previous model version.
On to the new 3.5 BTN. These are close to perfection. Pockets are updated with one that is large enough to hold a iPhone 6 (just) or a balled up shell (I use an Arc'teryx Incendo). I first wore these on a rainy 9mile technical trail run (steep hills, creek crossings, logs, deep mud, etc). Absolutely no chafing. With the on and off rain I was constantly donning and shedding my shell as it was quite warm when it wasn't raining. The pocket made this easy. Plus there is another smaller pocket for a gel, which I really needed at about mile 5. All around, it made me want to clean out my shorts drawer and buy another couple of pairs of these. I'll slowly convert over to this short exclusively.

Found a pair of these shorts about a year ago while on vacation in San Diego. Loved them. Decided to get another pair and ordered online. Not sure if it's a design change or poor construction but...chafing is the result. Still love the design, pockets, fabric, but something with the heat welded inseam is not working. Very disappointed. May just be a manufacturing defect.
    Fits just fine.

    Nothing Compares

    • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A good pair of running shorts is easy to find, but a great pair of running shorts - ones that you can live in - are very rare. These shorts are by far the best I have ever had.

Recently, I spent 4 days camping and running in the Grand Canyon and Moab, including the double-crossing of the GC - a 46 mile run between to the North and South rim. In those 4 days, I never took these off. Sure, a little disgusting, but these shorts are just that comfortable.

They breathe extremely well to keep you comfortable in the warmest of environments and the liner keeps everything in place without causing any chaffing - even after 8+ hours of running. On the right hip, you have two stretch pockets for gels. On the left, there is a longer stretch pocket that I've found can hold my phone or solid foods and on the back, there is a larger zipper pocket. I have found that I can hold two gel flasks (5 gels in each), a few honey waffles/bars, and powdered drink mix. In other words, enough storage for a very long day.

After 350-400 miles on these shorts, I am seeing no wear and tear. I have no doubt that these will last a long time and continue to be my hands-down favorite.

Would you know if this back pocket would fit an iPhone 6 Plus without a case?
