The North Face Base Camp Messenger Bag is built to withstand the worst abuse the city can dish out—whether you're a professional bike messenger or a caffeine-soaked law student. An adjustable, padded shoulder strap helps cushion the big loads the Base Camp Messenger is capable of hauling, and two big mesh zippered compartments and a huge internally divided main compartment organize your gear. Though this burly bag doesn't have a dedicated laptop pocket, the Large Base Camp Messenger has gained popularity with widescreen laptop packers who already have a padded sleeve. *See standard features for dimensions.
Bottom Line: The North Face Base Camp Messenger Bag is city-friendly, and by that we mean city-proof.
great bag, I travel with my computer a lot and it is perfect for carrying my laptop as well as tons of other crap! I stuff it with headphones, external hard drive, notebooks, pens, and tons of other travel stuff. there is lots of room, and Im always amazed at how much I can cram into it.
This is a good 'messenger style' bag. The reason I say that is because it is not a true bike messenger bag. This bag takes the standard/bland shoulder bag and adds best qualities NF brings to the table. It's well built, rugged, and water resistent. The only compliant I had was the zipper. It was not easy to close the zipper with the bag fully open because it would get caught on the corners. This was a real pain. It's a good bag and will work for 90% of the people out there. If you need a real bike messenger bag, check out Chrome or Tumbuk2.

so....why is it that Northface has none of these large messenger bags available through any of its suppliers in all black color--Motorcycle Consumer News wrote it up as being great! I want the large size in all black
This is a great utility bag, it is indestructible and very water resistant. I use this as my computer bag for work. I am an IT administrator so i needed some thing that could hold a lot of gear: Tools, Cables, laptop, etc. It does not have a built in laptop sleeve so you will need to buy a padded sleeve to protect it.
This bag is really not designed for the backcountry or for heavy travel. It's great for city or cit-suburban travel. I bought the bag to carry books, a computer, papers, and daytime things (brown bag lunch, tissues, etc.) and it has been amazing. The fold over snaps keep the lid secure, and the outer material is a heavyweight and durable synthetic. The bag has many pockets that easily store and organize everything you might be carrying. The shoulder strap is really comfortable, and feels quite secure. This is great as a school bag, work bag, or for daytime use.
Well first off , i wanted a bag that was not quite a briefcase , not quite a "casual" messenger bag. this is perfect. i was skeptical because i have used a back pack for many years (north face hot shot , good-- but probally will ebay now). i found most messenger bags look girlie, but this one is awesome. The black color is very un-assuming. very low profile. i reccomand the large size (really it seems normal sized) for guys, and/or those with 17"/gaming notebooks. the materials are very high quality, i think this would repeall water well. i really dont have time to say more but this is great alterntive to backpacks and briefcases... really one of best purchases. of course backcountry had cheaper shipping, and it was on sale. deff would recommend this site and the bag fully. great great product.
Like it says in the description, "Though this burly bag doesn't have a dedicated laptop pocket, the Large Base Camp Messenger has gained popularity with widescreen laptop packers who already have a padded sleeve." The L size is 18" long.Laptop sizes are diagonal so there's no problem, your computer will fit.
I LUV THAT IT HAS SEVERAL COMPARTMENTS,PERFECT 4 A RAINY DAY ,JUST 1 NEGATIVE IT LOOKS DAMAGED ON BOTH SIDES ON THE PLASTIC HINGE(MELTED? NOT SURE HOW 2 DESCRIBE IT),BUT IT NOT 2 NOTICEABLE IN BLACK.IT'S PRETTY AWESOME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yes it will fit. But if you use it for biking and carry a lot of gear/stuff it really cuts down on space and it rides right up against your back. But it really is a great bag.
This is a standard messenger bag, nothing more, nothing less. The material is the best part of the bag. It is super tough and extreamly durable. But the rest of the bag is just standard. It is a great bag when it is on sale, otherwise it is too expensive for what you get.
Let me start out by saying I tried out about half a dozen different messenger bags searching for something that I could use every day on my road bike, and this is the bag that came out on top.
All and All this is an awesome bag, the material it's made out of is tough like a coffin nail and when it's zipped up it's pretty much water PROOF. Not water resistant, but fill-it-with-ice-and-use-it-as-a-portable-beer-cooler waterproof.
Also, it's fairly unassuming and doesn't look like a trendy hipster messenger bag. I ride through some fairly gnarly parts of Oakland on a daily basis and not drawing attention to myself is desirable (for obvious reasons). Slap a band sticker over the big north face logo and the bag goes from looking a little pricey to a little dollar store-y. Mucho bueno.
However, where fit and finish is concerned it's rougher than those hipsterish bags are. At first the zipper is a huge PIA to close when the bag isn't resting on a table or something (IE, when it's on your shoulder). Once you break the bag in a little it gets easier, but you'll still fight it a little. Also, there's no cloth or padding over the plastic on the back so you can expect a nice big sweaty spot on the back of your shirt if you're riding in hot weather.
And finally, I don't know who North Face thought was going to be buying these, but I've never encountered a bag with some much superfluous length to the straps before. I literally had to roll up and zip-tie all of the extra length on the main shoulder strap, as a good 2ft of it would flap around behind me when riding, and the bag is designed in a way that makes it impossible to cut the extra length off.
All that said, it's a rock solid bag, and a steal at the discontinued color price.
I love my new tnf bag, it's perfect for those rainy days, it's light and has so many pockets for everything, perfect to carry my 17'' inch computer. thx backcountry great work
bought it for my son to carry his 16 inch laptop. Easily fit a 17 inch computer sleeve (swiss werks). very well made and really cool looking. lots of pockets. son loved it!!!!
I purchased this bag prior to a 2 month long trip to the UK. I used it daily for books, laptops, technology and as a bag when I was on my bike. One day it started to pour rain while I had my laptop in the bag on my bicycle, I got soaked but everything in the bag was dry! This bag is worth every penny.
