Description

The North Face Base Camp Duffel fits all the gear you could possibly need, and it'll last for-ev-er.

The North Face Base Camp Duffel is an expedition classic. Its heavy-duty fabric withstands a lifetime of abuse, and its alpine-cut shoulder straps allow for comfortable carrying as a backpack. Cram this duffel full of gear for an Everest expedition or pack it for a Thanksgiving family reunion. You can practically pack your own yak in the extra large version's 155-liter compartment. Two internal mesh pockets hold small items, and the D-shaped zipper gives exceptional access to every corner. Daisy chains make it easy to tie the Base Camp Duffel to a car roof rack or camel. Four compression straps make the cargo manageable.

Good Large Bag

I originally got this bag in a Small as a gym bag, and I hated it. I felt that it was too much material and too many straps for such a small bag- it was just overloaded. But I decided to get the XL for a camp bag, and it's perfect! The material is durable and I feel no remorse tossing it around. The straps on the XL bag are perfect- so you can handle it with ease. Plus the space is AWESOME! I would definitely recommend if it you're looking for a large bag.

is it water proof for a fishing boat?

is it water proof for a fishing boat?

Responded on

It's not quite waterproof to completely immerse in water, but it's close. The fabric is waterproof, but the zippers aren't, so there's a velcro flap over the top of them to keep water off. So you can leave it out in the rain, let it get splashed with seawater, turn a hose on it, and it'll be fine, but if it goes overboard, some water is going to get in.

Great duffel, but more size options?

I agree with all the accolades of other reviewers - it's an awesome design and construction. However I'd wish that the designers would read the universal airline limits. The 'L' and 'XL' TNF base camp duffels come in 90 and 155 liter models. At circa 120 liters, the bag reaches the limit that airlines will take without paying oversized bag fees (L + W + H = 62" or less). For my purposes, the 90 was not large enough, while the 155 was too big to cinch down to make the limits. TNF base camp is a first choice that I'll not be buying.

Bombproof

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Oh my god, this thing is amazing. Seriously, it's virtually indestructible. If you're looking for a burly travel duffel to haul gear, look no further. It's also pretty comfortable to carry as a backpack, just pack softer stuff on top.

A definite go-to for every weekend trip always and forever. And, when empty during the week, it's a great kitty playhouse.

Bomb Bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

These bags are great for hauling gear. Lots of space. Durable and water resistant. Shoulder straps are great when you load these things up. I have three bags. Medium on up. Next best thing to a pickup truck!

Built like a rock

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

The material is tough and sheds water. The mouth has a great lip so no water comes through the zippers. I got a M and fit everything I needed in it for a ski weekend in Utah. Love the backpack straps.

Solid bag!

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Bag is great, lightweight and room for tons of stuff. Have 4 of these bags in different sizes. Wifers filled the XL to the brim for our recent Cabo trip and it still was under 50 lbs.....highly recommend. One big benefits is that the XL bag weighs 7-8 lbs less than a comparable sized suitcase.

Perfect gear bag with minimal frills

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I like this bag because it only has what's necessary, no frilly pockets or unnecessary zippers. I have used the large for a 3-week river trip. It fits perfectly in the 127 liter waterproof bags from a certain plastic welder. Perfect if you're pitching camp a little further from your transportation than bear hugging your bag to is comfortable. Just throw this guy on your back with the shoulder straps and, voila!, you can make it a reasonable distance with ease. I find the L size reasonable to wear on my back as a 5'1" small build female. I can fit my sleeping bag, pillow, pad, 2-person dome tent, multiple changes of clothes and toiletries in my large bag, with some room for sandals and field gear.
All in all, I highly recommend this bag, it's rugged and convenient and worth the cost (although I must admit I always buy the on sale wacky colors).

"Sponsored by The North Face"

"Sponsored by The North Face"

We joked that our trip to New Zealand and Tahiti were "sponsored by The North Face," but really, we all just liked the bag. A lot.

The Base Camp Duffel transitioned nicely from our stays in hostels to the high end hotels, and were always easy to stop at the airport. One downside is that if you pack these to capacity, they get a bit heavy. Nothing against the bags, of course, that's just user error.

Great Bag So Far

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I have only had the opportunity to use this bag a hand full of times, but I have a feeling this is going to become my go to bag. This thing has been thrown around a number of airplane underbellies, in and out of trucks, and stuffed to it's brim, and there is not a single scratch, or sign of wear, on this bag. The only complaint I could possibly come up with is that the backpack straps are not the most comfortable things in the world. Although they are very functional, I would not suggest trying to use them to carry the bag, fully packed, any sort of distance.

Exceeded Expectations

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I bought this duffel in Xl for family ski trips/ vacations and girls weekends as well. It has a very sturdy zipper, the material is attractive, washable, and appears to be indestructible. I just bought another matching one when it went on sale. No more cute duffels with broken, gapping zippers for me!

Looks like a winner of a duffel bag

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've only used this bag a couple times but so far it has been great. All the stitching and material looks like it will hold up to almost anything I could throw at it and in a medium I can fit probably 2 weeks worth of casual every day clothes in it and still have space.

Looks like a winner of a duffel bag

Clydesdale of the luggage world

You want a beast? I'm talking a no holds barred, knock down, drag out, one-on-one bag that has room, customization, and some sweet North Face Logos? Then this is your bag!

I bought this in 2011 for a durable travel bag that would serves as a duffel for week long vacations, and carry my gear whilst on adventures. IT. HAS. NEVER. LET. ME. DOWN.

It packs nice, as it is roomy and you never feel bad throwing in some rugged gear that may scratch lesser bags. the straps are durable and the cinch straps are capable of wrangling even the bulkiest load to within accetable limits to carry on to an airline. While that isn't its most prominant use, its a nice change from teh cookie cutter roller bags.

But Bro! What about the "Base Camp"? Not to worry, the bag can handle a set up for top rope, snowshoeing, or any multitude of contraptions you can fit in there. It cleans easy, survives the trials of the outdoors and then begs me to take it out again.

The only drawback is the shoulder strap set-up. I'm not a huge fan of the flimsiness of the straps in comparison to the beefiness of the other features. While not a deal-breaker, I'd caution anyone seeking to use this as a backpack when any real weight is in the bag.

Overall: This is a must-have for your gear pile. Heck, it can even e used to organize said pile and show off your love for The North Face.

I want a dozen

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Seriously, if I could put all my gear in these bags, I would have dozens of them. They are RUGGED. They handles are STRONG. The material is durable and waterproof. The zippers are not, but I've never had a problem with water infiltration in serious downpours with my medium on the back of my motorcycle. The flap overlaps the zippers enough that it sheds water away. If you like having a shoulder strap, try this trick: take a canvas shoulder strap from another, far inferior, piece of luggage and use some old carabiners to attach the ends to the grab handles on the ends of the bag. I broke the plastic clips from the donor shoulder strap off since you don't need them with the carabiner attachment. This way you get the convenience of a shoulder strap and you look like an intrepid adventurer. Wearing it on your back with the supplied straps works, but all your gear gets awkwardly jumbled and it can be annoying trying to get into the bag with those backpack straps in place.

Easy packing

LOVE this bag I have one to many, I got a size M for my buddy who is having a kid and they ended up using it for the baby bag, Its easy to wear as a backpack and its water proof. Love it!

Forget all other luggage options!

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I've seen these bags for years and have thought that much about them... EXCEPT every time I'm at the baggage carousel and I can't spot my square blk roller... NOT anymore! I went with the green and red bags both large and IN CHARGE. Don't hesitate.

The Holy Grail of duffles

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift, but have feedback to share

Got this as a gift for my roomate, he loves it. Even the medium has almost never ending space to cram gear in. The material is beyond heavy duty, it must be borderline indestructible. Great duffle, I'd suggest this to everyone.
