I have worn these surfing as well as mountain biking and running in a pinch and they are totally comfortable and functional. I love the length--they come right to the top of my knee when I wear them low on my waist. I am 5'4", about 130lbs and a size 8 is baggy on me but comfortable and exactly how I like to wear my boardshorts.
Currently have a pair of North Face women's board shorts
Currently have a pair of North Face women's board shorts that look very similar to these - but they have a mesh liner. Anyone know if this pair does as well? Or, any North Face board shorts that do? I'd love to buy more.

these do not have a mesh liner--they are straight board shorts. Really good board shorts, though!

I think these shorts are of good quality. Very nice material and pretty color. However, I ordered an 8 and it is WAY too tight. Very odd for me as I usually wear an 8, sometimes even a six. I never expected to have to order these in a 10. It is a shame that size is not available or I would just exchange.

The shorts are shorter than they appear in the picture, but the quality seems to be a lot nicer than the picture would imply. Really nice heavy duty quality material.
