These were perfect jackets...why did they stop making them? Anyone know? Looks like they replaced with the Nimble but it fits so much bigger and is not the same.

Size seems to be mostly true with the sleeves being slightly too long for my arms..no big deal. Quality is good and it should be adequately warm for cool conditions or under an outer shell in colder climes. the only thing I don't like is that the polyester material won't feel good next to bare skin...I recommend a long sleeved t-shirt underneath.
I bought this for my brother in law who lives in Pittsburgh and works as a personal trainer. He says that he wears it almost every day and when we just visited with him in Maine, he wore it every day. He said that he loves everything about it. I look like a great gift giver right now...
Good light jacket. I wear in running and stay comfortably warm. It allows a full range of movements. Works well as a layering piece under my Apex Bionic jacket. It is not an insulated base layer like I originally thought but works very well as a wind stop while running. The side hip pocket hold keys or my iPod well. However there is no headphone hole into the inside of the jacket which would be a nice feature. Overall a good light jacket.
Works really well for biking in the Bay area. Enough wind gets through to give some cooling and will hold off everything but a major downpour. Nice to wear for hiking as well. And it does have a drawstring which I think is great. Very happy with this shirt....
I love it! I took it on a 4 day trip on Cumberland Island off Ga coast on labor day weekend. It was pretty hot and humid on the island, and the bugs were out with a vengeance. i threw this shirt on while at camp so i won't get eaten alive by mosquitoes (bug spray did not stop them at all), and i was suprised that i wasn't overheating in it. when we hiked 8 miles on the beach, i wore this shirt to keep from getting sunburn, with the sea breath, it felt great in this shirt. i did, however, get caught in a tropical downpur while i was on a short day hike on the beach, and this shirt was the only thing i was wearing (i had pants and shoes of course), i got soaked from head to toe, but it only took 10 mins for this shirt to dry up. i love this thing, i will be using it all the time!
Shirt is top notch. Better name for the color would have been "pumpkin". That's how bright orange this shirt is in "Ignition Orange". The picture doesn't accurately dipict the real color.
great shirt for cool, rainy days. wouldn't suggest using it as your only outerwear on cold days. i'm a true large, and i should have gotten an xl so i could layer under it.
Bought this thinking I'd have to wait for fall to check it out, not so. A recent camping trip turned unseasonably cold and this shirt came through like gang busters. Simple, well made and trim but not restrictive, this promises to become one of my most often used layers. Gonna be great for fall mountain biking.
I wore this from the bottom all the way to the top of Mount Washington in NH, that has the worst weather ever, and I was comfortable and warm all the way! I am so impressed at the fit, the pockets and the fabric. It's absolutely one of the best jackets I have purchased in a while!
Size runs slightly large. I am 5-10, 175 lbs and wear a medium. Great fit. Great stretch. Great abrasion resistance. Great for cool weather rock climbing or mtn biking. I have two. My experience?- from Russia to Peru, Broad Peak to Mt Kenya, El Cap to Lotus Flower Tower... 45 years of alpinism, marathons, and a few epics. Every piece of gear is better for some things, and worse for others, but for actual outdoor cool weather use- this is truly a classic.
I bought this for my husband who works on a golf course. He says he loves it. He can wear it to work in the mornings when it's a little brisk on the course. It's light weight, durable and very comfortable material.
I wore my Apex on a recent trip to the Oregon Coast and it worked great in light rain and wind coming off the Pacific. I would recommend a long sleeve shirt underneath for added comfort. Large worked for me at 6'4" / 225.
I drive a jeep wrangler. When winter is gone so it the top. Spring and Fall Mornings in Park City can be "brisk". This pullover is perfect for those mornings. I've worn it in 40 degree weather and it works great. I have two now and use them both almost exclusively.
Bought the North Face Apex Zip Shirt as a gift for my son and he LOVED IT! It fit perfectly and even his girlfriend put it on and hinted that she would like one. Guess her Christmas Present has been dccided!
This jacket is a good as part of a layering system. On its own its not the warmest and it isnt qutie as windproof as suggested. However, its breathability, packability and overall function are great. I used on an early fall ascent of the Diamond- it kept me warm(w/2 layers underneath) and dry. Very stylish IMHO too. Stops the precip as well. Worth it. Buy it.
A great underlayer. Breathable and comfortable, didn't feel bulky under my jacket. Wore one polypropylene shirt under the Apex with a jacket and was quite warm. Although it was pretty warm at the base (at Mammoth), it was windy and cold at the top. This was a great addition to keep me warm and comfortable, also was nice for apres ski! I would highly recommend.
This jacket is as comfortable as they come. The material is quite giving, more stretchy than expected, but not in a bad way. Great for a hike in the woods or a day at the game. The only reason it's a 4 is that there is no waist drawstring.
I've used this for skinning, XC skiing, and biking. It is fine for aerobic activity in 20-30F temps. It works well when you want a light outer layer to handle minor precipitation, it is fairly water resistant. In terms of sheer warmth, there's not a ton. A good fleece or a backup layer is useful if you stop moving or elements worsen. The key to remember is that this is a shirt, not a really a jacket.
I've always thought that softshell jackets had very limited use. (And I'm not anti-softshell, I have a jacket, and a hybrid jacket, and two softshell pants, one of them hybrid as well.) But with an extended outing, or any outing where the weather could turn bad, you have bring a real shell anyway, so consequently, my softshell jacket stayed at home in the closet more often than not.
Until I started thinking softshell shirt, which is what this is. I wear it has a single layer when hiking in warm weather (55-70f). A brisk wind comes up, no problem. A light shower, no problem. A deluge, well, it gives me time to get out my Marmot PreCip shell before I get soaked. And through all of that, it maintains a comfortable body temp. If I get a chill I might put on a very light base under it, like a Mountain Hardwear Wicked-T. If it's colder still I might throw on my Windstopper fleece, either over or under it.
There are hardly any products like this on the market. Arcteryx has a softshell "shirt", but it retails for $150. I wish the fit if this one was a little more snug, it's kinda billowy at the bottom, a straighter, more athletic cut would have been better. And theres a little zippered hip pocket that doesn't seem to be of much use to me. I will probably remove it.
I live in the tropics but vacation in the mountains. This shirt worked great while in Whistler as a base layer. I was able to wear this up the lifts in the fall and then add layers to summit. I cant wait to try it in early winter.
I have looked all over to find a product that worked as well as my old Ultrawick pullover. This seemed to meet the requirement, but not quite. The one complaint I have is that, in cool weather, the material is cold to your skin. A light fleece liner would fix it, but now I need two pullovers. It is better at handling the wet than my good ole Ultrawick, but it is not as warm. Generally I like it, but will need to buy something to line it. As a base layer? Who ever said that should spend some time outside.
Ever since my wife quietly "lost" my previous Apex jacket after I had gotten paint on it, I had been hassling her to find me a new one. I used to wear the old one everywhere because it was comfortable and cut a rugged manly figure on me. Well, she finally found me a replacement, and I couldn't be happier. Actually, I'm wearing it right now. But it isn't just a sit in front of your computer sort of softshell, I also took the old one to the summit of Mt. Whitney and in other parts of Sequoia National Park as well. If the new one is like the old one, the only problem is that it is not impervious to paint.
I got this for Christmas and it is so cool! It isn't meant to keep you warm but you won't get wet at all with this jacket. If you layer when you go ride it is the warmest thing ever with a great breathable rating. This will be the best jacket in the spring and fall so I can't wait until then. But until then layering works so well with this. Just make sure you get a size larger then usual
I think this jacket/shirt is great in cool weather. I went on a 10 mile day hike in 35 degree weather last weekend with a light weight base layer underneath and it was perfect. I never felt the need to take it off because of overheating. If I were to be out overnight in it, I would pack a wool sweater or something to go underneath it. I previously thought that soft shells were worthless - too light for the cold and to warm to move in, but this one is just right.
I got this shirt/jacket for my boyfriend and he absolutely loves it. It is a great lightweight, waterproof shell. It is not very heavy or warm on its own, but provides a great layer between him and wind/rain.
This is a great Shirt/Jacket. Blocks the wind and water just beads up on it. The only thing they may have wanted to do is put a soft liner on the inside. Over all it is a great pullover.
First of all I received my North Face Jacket in a timely manner that was unbelievable (3 days), which was fantastic! Second of all, I do a lot of fishing on lakes in Iowa/Wisconsin and sometimes the lakes are really rough in the Spring and Fall, which makes this jacket an asset to any serious fisherman's arsenal of foul weather gear. The fact that North Face gear is wind and water proof makes a believer out of me. Keep up the excellent work.
This pullover is pretty nice, and does a pretty good job repelling light to moderate rain. The one knock I have on the Apex Zip Shirt is that the inside of the shirt is somewhat scratchy. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's "uncomfortable," but I do wish that it had a brushed lining or something that made the interior of the shirt more comfy. However, you can;t really feel the "scratchiness" if you wear a t-shirt underneath. The shirt is pretty lightweight too, so thats a plus.
The greatest feature of this shirt/jacket is its weight. It is so thin, yet holds in heat extremely well. You can stuff it into a pack and it will take up almost no space. It is fully waterproof and works extremely well in that sense. Water beads up like nothing and a quick shake gets all the water off of you. I have the older version of this, and the only downside there is the the bottom has drawstrings. They seemed to have fixed that issue in the new model and from there I cannot find any flaws in the design. Grab yourself a couple!
