The North Face's light, breathable Men's Apex Pneumatic Jacket packs easily and keeps you dry on your springtime runs and summer bike rides. The four-way flexible fabric won't hinder your arms as you stretch out your muscles, and the adjustable cuffs and hem cinchcord keep cold morning air from creeping in. Stash an energy bar and your keys in the two zipper hand pockets and hit the trail.
Bottom Line: Pull on The North Face's lightweight Apex Pneumatic Jacket and quicken your step.
This jacket is a wonderful piece to add to my wardrobe, on those rainy days, I just watch the rain pellets sit on top of the jacket, while I stay dry underneath. Great Jacket for the price.
I bought it as my third between the three. I use them to layer underneath my ski jacket as well as wknds with jeans.
Volt: Thin enough to wear over a t-shirt and indoors. Works well too underneath the Bionic when it gets colder without having to put on a thick jacket.
Apex Bionic: My personal favorite of the three. It is often my outer layer when active outside and temps are cold but not less than 40 degrees or so.
Apex Pneumatic: I bought it as my "in between" and it fits that job perfectly. Thinner than the Bionic, thicker than the Volt, it has a slight fleece lining. The outside feels like the Bionic but more stretchy like the Volt and a little thicker. The North Face logo is embroidered on like the Bionic (the Volt is not, although after a few washes it looks brand new still). Still thin enough to wear indoors. My only complaint is the zippers (side pockets) bottom out 6 inches up from the bottom of the jacket. On the Volt and the Bionic the zippers reach down 2 inches or so from the bottom of the jacket. This may matter to you if you are looking to use the Pneumatic as an outershell alone or with the Volt underneath. In that case, I'd go with the Bionic.
Lastly, I have an XXL for each and it is close to perfect. Normally in XXL the body is too big and North Face does a pretty good job slimming down the body or chest. I'm 6'5", 235 lbs. Arm length is perfect and I'm a 37/38 in that category.

I ordered the large and it's a good fit for 5'7" and 170lb. Just that the sleeves are a bit long but since it has velcro not a problem. Great jacket for anyone.
Wore this great jacket through an all-day hike in Mt. Magazine State Park in Arkansas. It poured rain all day and I stayed nearly completely dry. Amazing.
This is my second apex jacket. My first was unlined and I was completely in love with it. I wore it for everything all year long. Layering was perfect. So I decided to get the Pneumatic for something a bit warmer on its own. It has taken over my favorite jacket spot for everything but summer. I still use it year round at the ice arena where is it perfect with a tee shirt underneath. It will keep me warm for hours.
The movement is wonderful. you can do anything you want. its true north face quality, feels like its gonna hold up for a very lone time. The softshell material is perfect, and the lining is thin but very soft. You cant go wrong with this jacket.
This jacket is amazing. I got it in on a rainy day, and immediately got to try it out in the rain and 45 degree weather. It kept me warm, and completely dry. Absolutely love this jacket. Great for running in cool weather because of the stretchy material.
I'm 6'0" and very thin (140 lbs). I'm worried about the medium being too baggy for me, but the small makes me worry about the length. Anyone have any advice? Thanks!
I've searched for the perfect mid-weather coat for quite a while and the Pneumatic is exactly it. Living and hiking in the northern edge of the country, I need jacket a jacket that performs well in the early and late seasons. This jacket will accomplish it. For added warmth, my TNF Pumori Fleece fits snugly underneath the jacket too.
I'm a slender build, 6' 165lbs, and the jacket has a nice athletic fit. It gains some extra point for style too. Get this softshell.
This year, I got hooked on outdoor jackets. so I bought more than 20 jackets from TNF to Arc'teryx. By far, I wear this jacket more than any other jackets. This is the best everyday jacket for everyone. the fit is perfect. At $60, I think everyone should have one. totally worth it.
I'm 6' 175lb and wear a medium in TNF softshell's. I prefer a technical fit, nothing too baggy. Depends on how you're proportioned. Check the sizing chart, but I think you would probably fit in a small pretty comfortably.
I've had this now for about a month. I live in FL, and don't need much of a jacket. This fits the bill nicely for evenings out and early AM runs. Only complaint is that it's a bit tight in the shoulders and upper arms for me (I got a M, 5'7/155). Otherwise, a great value.
I had a volt soft shell for a couple of years before I managed to forget it in a lecture hall at my university. Needless to say, I never saw it again. That being said, I'm looking to replace it. I was definately satisfied with it, but I've also been eyeing the pneumatic and the momentum. Any comments could swing which one I get. Fall is pretty much here now and I'm finding myself without my "old faithful" jacket to fall back on. Help!
The jacket is amazing!! i never thought it could be so versitle and so warm. I'm in Iowa and it is freezing cold and it is holding up like a champ. A great choice for anyone looking for a new Jacket!
It doesn't because it is an un-laminated softshell that has good breathability without using core or pit zips. While shell jackets and even laminated softshell jackets need this type of venting for more aerobic activities, it is usually not necessary on a lighter weight softshell like the Pneumatic.
this jacket is incredible. it's breathable, flexible, and downright comfortable. i loved the north face before it boomed and became popular everywhere, and it still never ceases to impress. this jacket is thin yet keeps me so warm! i love it and can keep warm in the winter, and even wear it up until the hottest days in summer without overheating! overall great jacket, reccommend it for anyone. :]
6 feet, about 180lbs.. large or extra large as a gift? He doesnt like things tight on his shoulders so Im just worried that a large will be too snug but an xlarge will be too big? I bought my brother the Denali in xlarge and hes about the same build and he needed a large. But i didnt know if i could really compare the two because of the style difference...?? Help?
I do not know what style year this is from. I am 6 1" and 179 lbs. Great looking jacket but I thought it was very snug under and around the shoulder area for a large. Even thought it stretches it feels snug across the back of the shoulders and under the armpits.
The Pneumatic is a great, lightweight soft shell jacket. It is well built and offers good wind protection. Don't expect it to keep you very warm since it has a very thin fleece lining but it does a great job of keeping wind and water out of your way. Also, it's very easy to layer underneath. I'm 5' 6" and 130lb and the small fits great. The only minor complaint is that the pockets are placed about 2 inches too high on the jacket.
Which North Face jacket should I get for the cool fall weather of San Diego, the Nimble or the Pneumatic? I'm looking for a breathable jacket that can be worn indoors as well. Also I'm 5'10" 165 lbs what is the best size for me medium or small?
The Nimble and the Pneumatic are essentially the same thing. They are both made of Apex Aerobic softshell with a DWR coating. I'm a fan of pockets, so I'd go for the Pneumatic myself.
Also, I'm the same height as you, but about 8 pounds heavier and I fit a small fairly well. TNF tends to have a rather boxy cut in their standard line of clothing, so I'd suggest you take a small as well.
Yes, you definitely could. Depending on what you had on underneath it, and how active you are, there should be no problem. If you were really moving you could probably get away with a wicking t. If you are walking or only lightly active, a long sleeve, very light thermal layer should keep you plenty warm. If you are just standing at a bus stop, size up and put a heavier thermal layer under it.
The Bionic uses the Climateblok fabric which is heavier and is better at shedding nastier weather and shrugging of cold winds. It is a better jacket for lower activity levels in cool temps or more activity in colder temps. The Pnuematic, with Apex Aerobic, breathes better and is the better jacket for more intense activity levels in cool to cold temperatures. It would not be as good on its own at keeping you warm in cold, windy weather since the fabric is light and made to be a little more wind permeable. Hope that helps!
The two jackets are also made of different materials. The Pneumatic is made of Apex Aerobic which is a very light weight and breathable softshell. It's air permeable so it will be wind resistant. The Apex Bionic is made of Apex ClimateBlock. It's a much heavier softshell material that is rated to 0 CFM for air permeability. This means it is essentially windproof.
bionic has no lining, just brushed fleece...the difference is that this is kind of a stretchy, lightweight, aerobic jacket that does not offer much protection form the elements. the Apex bionic is a Fully windproof and nearly waterproof outer shell...the Pneumatic is lighter and more breathable, Bionic is warmer and more protective
I have both jackets. One Pneumatic and two Bionic. The Pneumatic is much lighter. It provides more flexability and range of motion while the Bionic is much more insulated and intended for weather protection. I primarily use the Pneumatic for running in the spring and fall here in the Northwest.

Needed a new jacket and after reading some reviews decided on this one. Truly the best jacket I've ever owned - period. The material is amazing, feels great, keeps me warm on those chilly mornings but not hot in the afternoon, and sheds water like nothing.
A side note: I'm a dog owner, and always have problems with dog hair getting all over my clothes. The DWR finish on this jacket doesn't allow hair to become imbedded in the fibers. One brush of my hand and any hair is gone- just convenient.
This one is perfect for Fall / Spring - I'll buy the Apex Bionic when it gets really cold out.
The North Face Apex jacket in question is rather pleasing. The indigo hue color of the garment is distinctive and very fetching. Though the jacket fits the person rather snugly, movement is not constricted by the resilient fabric. As for an opportune critique, the side compartments of the jacket are higher than that of natural hand placement, hence slightly inhibiting the ease of object retrieval. Otherwise, the context of that what was advertised on this given site was in conjunction with the distributed tangible item.
These jackets are meant to be close to your body, although you could easily go for a size up if you want to wear some layers beneath it. I decided on a medium basically because the jacket is great to have on my runs because it breathes so well. It just depends on how you want to utilize it.
Apex Pnuematic - I bought the size L for my husband, and it fits him perfect. He is 5'5 180lbs, and he just LOVES this jacket! He said it's versatile - he wears it over a short-sleeved shirt during 50F degree days, and he wears it over both a short-sleeve shirt and thick sweater during windy 40F degree days in Chicago. It keeps him warm and comfortable. I'm thinking of getting him the Apex Bionic for those 30F degree days!
The Bionic is fleece lined. The Pneumatic is lighter, possibly stretchier. Really, this is for high output activities or spring/summer use while the Bionic is for colder stuff.
Absolutely worth it! Coat fits and looks great, lightweight but keeps you warm. It is a great coat for when you don't need anything really heavy. Wear it all the time in New Jersey.
no, this is made out of the least wind blocking fabric of the north face apex fabrics as opposed to the bionic that is made out of completley windproof fabric
Hola, have tired both Apex Pneumatic and Apex Bionic jackets for size. I description of the Bionic seems to indicate it's a bit more weather resistant, but the sleeves on this sure are long! The Pneumatic has nice elastic type cuffs that keep the sleeve where it should be. Is the Pneumatic jacket warm enough for nordic skiing, hiking in late fall weather?
This is a great jacket. Not a lot of frills, just efficient. Backcountry sent it out quickly and I had it within a week. In terms of aesthetics, I've had nothing but compliments. In terms of function, it's lightweight, breaths well and keeps me warm without being too hot. I'd highly recommend this jacket.
Great jacket. Extremely versatile. It keeps me surprisingly warm considering how thin it is. The pockets are also really convenient and useful without being awkward.
This jacket is a wonderful piece to add to my wardrobe, on those rainy days, I just watch the rain pellets sit on top of the jacket, while I stay dry underneath. more...
