Witnessing a sunrise in the alpine recharges the deepest part of your being, and The North Face Apex Elixer Softshell Jacket ensures that the same deep-down part doesn’t freeze in the morning winds. Made with the highly wind-resistant Apex Aerobic softshell fabric, this jacket keeps you protected from the wind and, thanks to its stretchy feel and excellent breathability, helps you stay comfortable while ski touring or climbing.

  • The jacket is covered with a water-repellent finish to keep the water out if you fall on the ski descent or get caught in a quick shower
  • Alpine fit allows ample movement and layering during a myriad of activities
  • Turtle-neck design keeps snow off your neck while it blows off the ridge above
  • Hem cinch cord and hook-and-loop cuffs keep the wind and snow from creeping into your under layers
  • High hand pockets are accessible while wearing a harness

Bottom Line: A tough softshell that’s great for winter layering, spring touring, and climbing.

For all outdoor sports in So Cal

By:
April 16, 2011

I first purchased this jacket with trail running in mind, and now I find that this jacket is perfect for all outdoor sports in Southern California. This jacket will keep you warm enough on cold mornings while your getting started, but once you get moving and the body temp rises you will not over heat, and if your from So Cal you can appreciate the 40 degree mornings and the 80 high noon. Another attribute of So Cal environment is the plants; they all want to poke, stab and cut you so I like to have long sleeves if possible and with the Apex Elixir I can without overheating, and if it does get a bit to warm the Apex Elixir has a very small stuff size that will fit easily in most hydration packs. In my experience this has been one of my most utilized technical jackets mainly because of its comfort, versatility and style. You could not ask for a better technical jacket for the price.

You said "so cal" about 9 times and nothing informative except that it will fit in a hydration pack.

Less fluff please.

would this work as a mid layer with a midweight base and shell

would this work as a mid layer with a midweight base and shell for 10-15* active winter hikes and climbs ?

I would think so, as long as your shell is good. I would think you may want a heavyweight base, you can always remove layers easier than packing and carrying them
