Good fit and fabric

I got this for my husband for his birthday after shopping around a lot and he LOVES IT. I looked at every other kind of men's softshell vest I could find. This vest fit him better than any of the others. He's a large or XL in most clothing and is sometimes sort of between sizes where L will be a little snug but XL is huge. The large in this vest fit him perfectly. The armholes are not too big/loose or too tight, it fits well in the body and shoulders but is not restrictive. It has 3 good-sized pockets that will fit his wallet, keys, phone, etc. Also the fabric is not too stiff like some softshell material and seems to be very resistant to pilling, pet hair and lint, unlike his old fleece vests. He can wear this to work and out to dinner afterwards and look presentable, unlike his fleece vests which always look a little ratty and are pet hair magnets. Also this vest is more wind and weather resistant than any fleece vest you will find. I also thought the price was quite decent when compared to prices on comparable vests (even before I got it with a 20% off coupon from Backcountry.)
Everything I expected.

I got this to replace my Denali vest which was showing its age with the fleece getting all fluffy. It does what the Denali vest didn't which was block out the wind. I'm pretty warm-blooded and this keeps me that way in cold temps. I'm a big guy (6' tall, 250lbs) with my weight pretty evenly distributed and (strangely enough) a large fits me perfectly. I love the clean, classic look of it. My only thought that would improve it would be for TNF to use a more durable material for the pockets.
NOTE: Be sure to clean any spills off promptly with cold water. As I have found and another reviewer noted, you'll save yourself the trouble of fabric discoloration.

I am a big guy (6'4", almost 300 lb). I got the 2XL, and it fits great. My only complaint is that the material doesn't wash well. I spilled some salsa on the vest, and when I got it out of the wash, you could totally see where I spilled the day before. I had to spend some time and hand wash the area to get it clean. That said, if I kill this one, I will happily get another.

Dunno why this thing is getting knocked in the reviews. I personally think its great, shopped around a lot of other brands but this was the best, most comfy soft shell vest I found. I'm usually not a huge fan of TNF and really think the brand has been going in the wrong direction for years, however this vest had everything I was looking for. I'm 6'1" and $1.75, got a L, generally just wear it around the office, town, & outdoor activities for layering or outer layer if weather permits. I think the outer material is quality, like the stretchiness of it, feel durable and the black won't show any junk that I may get on it.
I know a lot of reviews have been saying its not warm and not comfy, bad material, etc. 1. its a vest, its not a replacement for a warm jacket, merely just a supplement to one & 2. I think of the other vest I looked at, its the most comfy, has the best fit, & is made from the best material.
I would recommend this to anyone looking for a good soft shell vest. I think it looks great, fits fine, and will last for several years, very simple design, doesn't break the bank. I agree w/ all the other positive reviews, to the haters: should have went w/ down...
Great Vest!

I ordered this vest for my husband for Christmas. We like to take day hikes a lot and Georgia weather can be pretty unpredictable. We've had a fairly warm winter this year and he tends to get too warm with a jacket on. I thought the vest would be the perfect solution for him while he's on the trails. I ordered the grey/black vest and it arrived right on time. He has been wearing the vest everywhere! It's very fashionable and functional and I think the perfect article of clothing for cool hiking days or just running errands. It can also easily be folded into your backpack and stored away when not in use. When ordering, keep in mind that this is not a bulky vest intended for extremely cold temperatures - it's a perfect vest for cool weather. Not only was the order process at Backcounty quick and super easy, but I was able to purchase this vest for a fraction of what it would normally have cost at another outdoor retailer (believe me, i shopped around). Overall, a wonderful ordering experience and a great product from North Face.
Needs a few improvements

Basically a good vest but the fabric is a little on the thin side so it is not very warm for cold conditions. Also the zips should be waterproof self-sealing and a little heavier, especially the pocket ones which are very light duty. The inner pocket material needs to be fleece, not mesh to keep hands warm. An inner chest pocket would also be helpful. The present Napolean pocket on the current model is a big improvement on the earlier model.

I gave this vest to my husband for the holidays . I don't think there has been a day since that he has not worn it. He loves everything about it.

This vest feels like rubber when you wear it. It is stiff, uncomfortable and IT ISN'T WARM. I have been wearing the Denali vests for years and they are wonderful and warm. Would stay away from the Apex Bionic Softshell.
Great Vest!

My second TNF vest, and just as happy with this one as my other apex vest. Fit's close, but not restricting. Good for layering under a shell, but over a long sleeve shirt. Would recommend to anyone, especially at the price.

These are actually all blue, not two toned with gray.

This year's inventory matches the photo we have listed. It is back to being two tone.
