The North Face Men's Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket's high-loft fleece keeps you warm when the temps drop, and the Apex ClimateBlock fabric blocks the wind so you won’t feel helpless and frozen on gusty days. The standard fit gives you plenty of room for layering when the mercury drops on your winter hike or backpacking trip. Two hand pockets warm your digits when you forget your gloves in the car, and stretch-woven cuffs help keep warm air in.
Bottom Line: Soft, warm fleece backing on a wind-blocking softshell.
Because this item had no cotton in it, I assumed it was safe to put in the dryer after washing it. Now the fabric surrounding the zipper has bunched up and my jacket looks quite wavy. Is there a way to relax the fabric, or should I just find someone to replace the zipper for me?
So I first bought a Denali only because I thought it looked cool. Turns out the Denali is worthless. Honestly it does nothing. Maybe as an insulation layer only but why spend so much for that? Yeah, not worth it. So I sold that and bought this Apex Thermal and couldn't be happier. What a world of difference. Holds up to the strongest winds and the wettest downpours. Says its not waterproof but pretty close. Love the look of the jacket and the material is so nice and that alone will keep it nice for years to come. Love this jacket.
My son loves this jacket! It kept him warm all winter in NJ, only needed a layer for the coldest of days. But he's outgrown it and they don't have one in his size! (m) Any other options we should look at? Things we liked: -Windproof/weather resistant - definitely an improvement over Denali fleece. -Soft Fleece lining helped insulate the jacket -Could wear with just a t-shirt to about 30, after that only minimal layering was required. -Color (we got Red since he's standing out at the bus stop during those dark winter mornings and I (mom) wanted something more visible than blue or black).
Cons: -The colder it got the stiffer the jacket got. -BC seems to not carry this any more!
Any suggestions welcome. Looking to stay under $150. Thanks! -NJ MOM
Check out the North Face Sentinel Thermal jacket. It's exactly the same as the Apex Bionic Thermal, except it has a Gore Windstopper liner. BC has a complete size run in Red, and it's on sale right now for $160 (regularly $230).
Side note: BC will carry the Apex Bionic Thermal again in the fall. It's a fall/winter item from the North Face and won't be available again until September-ish. Hope that helps.

This is a great all around jacket. Great looking, fits perfect, waterproof, windproof and very warm. I also own the regular Apex Bionic and this is definitely more of a "cold" weather jacket than it. Warm with a T-shirt underneath down to 40 deg. Add a sweatshirt or a thin fleece and easily comfortable in the single digits. It can get a little too warm indoors for any extended period of time and could benefit from underarm zipper openings for some ventilation. Also, would like to have the chest pocket as on the standard Apex Bionic. I'm 6'1" 185lbs and the large fits well with anything from a t-shirt to a medium weight sweathshirt/fleece underneath.
if the north face said dick well give u 100 jackets to give to ur family n friends theyd all get this one.ive had mine now since dec of 08 and its quite honestly one amazing jacket.ive worn in the 20s wth rain and stayed dry.u can actually soak this jacket n still b warm i cant wait till they make one wth a hoody then id b in heaven
Nice lightweight jacket. Completely windproof- my friends in their denalis freeze and get wet while i stay dry and warm. i'm 6'1 175, and wear a large just because the chest length of the medium is too short.
whats the activity? need it for rain? about even to me for warmth, but the r4 is more comfortable as a stand alone. for 35 degrees and above you should be ok with a lite layer under either. for activities i'd go withn the r4,but for lite rain and wind,i'd go with the apex.
This is one of the warmest in term of light weight jacket. It is little warmer than Marnot Afterburner Jacket. It man handle TNF Sentinel Thermal Jacket. Sentinel is soft shell jacket. Apex is softshell too but it is not easy movement as Sentinel. In the end, if you need warmer, then Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket the way to go or Marmot Afterburner jacket.
The jacket works great. It's comfortable, warm (note that the high-loft lining is considerably warmer than most softshells), and looks fine. I am 5'9", 160lbs and bought a large. The medium would also work on me but would make it more of a performance fit, while I wanted something for around town. On me the large fits well across the shoulders, but the sleeves are a bit long. With a base layer, this would probably work fine down to 20F or so, possibly more if you are working out.
The Apex Bionic Thermal is the warmer of the two. In addition, it is completely wind proof, (wind pro blocks 4x the wind of regular fleece), and the bionic is much more water resistant. The wind pro is more breathable, however.
I live down south in Georgia and our winters consist of mostly wind, rain and near freezing temps. I can't think of a better jacket for where I live. I don't like bulky shirts so I usually wear this with a long sleeve t-shirt and I don't feel the cold until its down below the 30's. When I put on a heavier shirt, its plenty warm down into the 20's.
This would definitely work for skiing. Keep in mind it's a softshell, so it's only water-resistant. It will be warmer than a standard softshell, which is a good thing unless you're skiing in REALLY nice weather. It's recommended for a lot of high output winter activities (snowshoeing, trekking, backpacking, hiking) so I doubt it will be too warm for skiing.
ive had my jacket since dec and i have to say holyyy moly.im not sure if waterproof but id say pretty close ive worn this jacket in a down pour and remained dry.im 5'9 205 and got an xl bein i like to wear hoodys under it.ive worn this jacket down 2 tepmts in the 20's and was very warm. as far as compared 2 a denali; i love my denali but this jacket is way warmer and windproof to where the denali isnt. over all one of the best jackets the north face has ever produced until they do a hoody version,
got 2 of these suckers1 for me and 1 for my fiance and proud 2 say amazinggggggg very warm. ive worn this jacket in 20 degree wheather and was very warm.id say if u were to put this jacket under a gortex jacket ud be ready 4 anything.my only gripe would b the arms r a tad long but other than that id have 2 say im very very pleased.
i am thinking about getting either the Apex bionic thermal or Sentinel thermal. it's kinda hard not being able to try them or feel them. anyone has any idea on which one feels more confortable. i live in Maryland, so kinda want something for the snow without feeling too bulky.
the apex thermal is warmer i had the other one and exchanged it 4 the apex if the north face said dick well give u 100 jackets to give 100 of ur friends theyd all get this jacket its amazing trusttttttttttttt me
Hey Jon - I think I can help you with this one. The interiors on the jackets are pretty close, with a slight edge going to to the Sentinel with regards to feel- it is a little softer. The fleece interiors are about the same in loft, so I wouldn't say one is warmer than the other. The exterior softshells are quite different- the Bionic is heavier and feels pretty burly. The Sentinel is lighter and has a much more soft feel to it. Last, the fit on the Sentinel is more athletic and fitted, where the Bionic is higher volume and not as articulated. Breathability is going to be similar. Hope this helps-
I just got this jacket a couple months ago. I had the regular apex bionic right before this and returned the non-thermal because I wanted something warmer. I love this jacket it is very comfortable, light, and warm. I live in Nebraska where it can get down a little below zero, but is usually just below freezing in the winter. The one thing about the jacket that I don't love, but it is my fault not theirs. I am about 5'9" 180 w/ a muscular build so I needed the large if I wanted the chest to have enough room to have anything besides a t-shirt underneath making the arms about one-inch too long, but when I am active they are the right length. I love this coat coat and would highly recommend it because of the reasonable price.
I would say it would be warm enough without a fleece underneath unless the temp was around the single digits and I would estimate that a medium would be the best fit for you.
This jacket does the trick for sure. Just got it and I put it through a real good test when i went to Chicago this past week. When i landed, it was 10 degrees. With a hat, scarf and gloves, couldn't have been more comfortable. I walked by the Sears tower on the way to my office. Wind froze my face because i didn't have on my hat, but the jacket kept me very comfortable. In 30 degree weatehr, I walked up and down Michigan avenue shoping and then outside, and then hustling through the airports. Couldn't have made the transition from the cold to indoors any better. I'm 5'9" 155. Run and workout a lot. Medium fits me well. Bulky sweater is snug, but a shirt and normal sweater and a fleece would do just fine..and keep you warm. Love it and 5 stars.
Hi, I'm looking to buy one of these, but being an avid runner (and short to begin with), I'm cut REAL slim -- 5'7'', about 125 pounds.Would a small be all floppy on me? Lengthwise, I don't have any problems, but I usually find a lot of room inside...and I just want a tighter/snug North Face coat which is becoming a pipe dream (I even tried on the Pnuematic, and that thing was a bit floppy and loose in the back). Or maybe there's a suggestion for another North Face coat out there?
the momentum fleece jacket, and the cipher jacket, those are very light tho, which would be prefferable for running right?...i dunno i cant even run in my regular apex bionic jacket (let alone the thermal one!)withought overheating, softshells are breathable but not magical! :-)------------------------I agree with the cipher. Either that or look at the Backcountry Rime pullover. Extreme breathability, water resist with some minimal core venting.
This is a wonderful jacket! I bought one for my nephew and one for myself, and we both love the jacket's warmth, water and wind repellance, and style. A vest pocket would be a nice addition, and I'd prefer that the cuffs be a bit more snug, but these are tiny complaints next to the kudos I give this jacket. I agree with a previous reviewer: for the money, the Apex Thermal far surpasses the Denali
This jacket is so lightweight and warm for the cold weather up here in Michigan. I've owned North Face before and they last for there quality and comfort.
hello. i am 5'9". 175 lbs...muscular build. I own another northface jacket that's a medium. What size should I get in the Apex Bionic Thermal Jacket? I have a feeling that a medium will be too snug.
Fits true to form. Very wind- and water-resistant unlike the North Face Denali. Pockets are fleece-lined and located anatomically well. Warm despite its weight but not suffocating. I just bought mine but it seems very durable. The inside and chin-guard feel almost like short fur, I love it. I bought a large and am satisfied with the fit.
Height: 6'1" / 185 cm Wingspan: 74" / 188 cm Weight: 165 lbs. / 75 kg
The regular Bionic has a zipped chest pocket whereas the Bionic Thermal does not. Also, the regular Bionic has straight wrists with no cuffs and Velcro adjustment for tightening up whereas the thermal has slight cuff. I would highly recommend either jacket, just depends on what temperature range you want to wear it in. The thermal is more of a cold weather / winter jacket whereas the regular I would say is a moderate weather jacket for fall or spring.
the regular apex bionic is just a shell backed with a brushed fleece lining, this is the same shell material but is lined with high-loft, thermal fleece for isulation, so this jacket is much warmer
I want to get this jacket for my boyfriend but I am unsure about size. All of his other jackets are smalls but I am unsure if I should order a small for this one as well in case he wants to wear something under it. He is 5 foot 7 and weighs 140 pounds but I am unsure of his arm length.
I bought this for my husband because he had one for 5 years and he wears it everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE. It looks ugly now so I am replacing it. It is wind proof and much warmer than every other jacket he has ever had. I am sure you will enjoy it too. Customer service was very helpful. Would recommend this website highly.
hi, if my son is 5 7" and weighs 140 would he be a small or a medium. i want him to be able to wear a sweater underneath, but the jacket looks like it is cut quite wide.
Just bought mine about a month ago as a discontinued color on sale for almost $50 less than regular. Looks like discontinued colors are still on sale if they have your size.
So I first bought a Denali only because I thought it looked cool. Turns out the Denali is worthless. Honestly it does nothing. Maybe as an insulation more...
This is a great all around jacket. Great looking, fits perfect, waterproof, windproof and very warm. I also own the regular Apex Bionic and this is definitely more...
