We guarantee complete satisfaction and an unlimited lifetime warranty. If at any time -- now, next month, in 30 years -- you're not 100% satisfied, send your gear back for a full refund. No questions asked."
That is how backcountry.com described their warranty when I purchased I pair of ski pants five years ago.
I just went through a nightmare warranty battle with backcountry.com. I have purchased thousands of dollars of gear from here over the years and I have even recommended this site to friends. That all changed today. I purchased a pair of $500 norrona ski pants when backcountry offered lifetime warranty on all their products. The issue I had with the pants is that the inseam tore and the stitching came out resulting in a hole in the crotch. No problem I figured, this is the first time I have needed anything repaired or returned that I purchased from here, the item has a lifetime warranty and it should be a simple fix, so I gave them a call. To my dismay I discovered the warranty was false and that backcountry essentially sold me on a lie. On the phone I was told by three different people that the warranty policy had been changed and there was nothing they could do to compensate me besides giving me the contact of the manufacturer, but they were even unable to do that. The pants I had purchased were from a subsidiary of Norrona called Whiteout. I made three calls to backcountry and no one could even give me a number for the manufacturer because they didn't know who made the pants. I guess I had to find that out on my own. The person I talked to the first time said they did not know the manufacturer's contact but they would send an email to me of proof of purchase so I could show the manufacturer since I no longer had a receipt. I never got an email. I called again and still no information on who to contact however I did get an email this time but it was from a different purchase I had made and the pants were not on it. The third time I called I had already figured out who made the item and just wanted the contact information for the manufacturer. I was advised I should just try contacting gore-tex to get the problem fixed even though it was a seam that went bad and not the fabric itself. At that point I gave up talking to them and never did I receive the reciept or proof of purchase.

I understand that backcountry probably did need to get rid of the no questions lifetime garuntee because it was being abused or they were getting way more returns than they had expected. However, for them to make no offer to compensate a loyal customer on an item with "no questions lifetime warranty" who had never claimed warranty before. Refusing to even take a look at a simple problem to see if there is anything they could do to help is arrogant. What backcountry has done is unethical and I will no longer do business with them. I advise doing business with local retailers who actually care about their customer, stand true to their word and know their product inside and out, in the long run it will be worth it. If you still choose to shop here because they have a lot of good brands be forewarned of the slippery policies and lack of warranty. I have no affiliation to active junky but if you still are going to shop here get an account with them . I'd rather see you with an additional 12% in your pocket. This is the first time I have ever written a negative review on anything but I feel that it is well deserved.

excellent quality, nice thick material. fleece lined shoulders and sized perfectly. I chose the XXL (I have super wide shoulders) but normally would buy the XL

Changed the design of the chest pocket

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 6' 2"
    Weight: 250 lbs
    Size Purchased: 3xl

I have ordered a few of these jackets over the years. I like the fit, I like the windproof material, and I *liked* the pocket design.

This newest version has shrunk the chest pocket. Prior years I could keep my phone and my wallet in the chest pocket with room to spare. Now it's barely room enough for my phone.

Super disappointed, this has been my go to jacket for years, now I'm going to have to try and track down something else.

phones have gotten bigger since we decided its cool again lol

Great jacket!

Fit felt a little off and boxy at first, but I came to find that it accommodated a light mid-layer when needed. Blocks wind extremely well and repels a light rain if needed. Material feels durable and good protection on trails with a lot of brush or jagged rock. My only complaints would be that it isn't that warm by itself and tends to retain the smell of camp smoke even after a few washes; thus only 4 stars.

Odd sizing

  • Familiarity: I returned this product before using it
  • Fit: Runs large
  • Height: 5' 8"
    Weight: 140 lbs
    Size Purchased: Small

I bought this and returned it, not because I didn't like it, but because it was very slim and tight in the arms (for a regular fit) and extra wide/large in the waste. It just didn't fit properly but I can tell its a nice jacket and will work great if it fits you properly.

Excellent Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size
  • Height: 5' 11"
    Weight: 270 lbs
    Size Purchased: 2XL

Great jacket, I bought the 2XL and it leaves plenty of room to wear a fleece or puffy vest underneath, size comparable to other softshells. Really nothing wrong with this jacket that I can pinpoint, it's just not as great as my previous softshell (out of production model from another manufacturer), not as warm, not as windproof, not as soft, but in fairness it was a $300 MSRP model not a $200 MSRP model. Primary complaint would be that the pockets extend back behind the hand holes and behind your centerline, so I occasionally 'lose' my keys or other small items because they are in a difficult to reach place. Also I don't like the plastic wrist velcro compared to soft velcro straps covered with the softshell material. Media pocket feedthrough and headset retention loop are nice features as well as the in-pocket waist cinch.

Is this the updated version of the Apex Elevation?

too small

backcountry should label how the jacket is cut. This is cut in a more slim fit/tailored rather than my other NF snowboard jacket. Sucks that I have to pay for return.....

Apex Bionic

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

Bought this product for my dad and he loves it. keeps cool in weather up to 60 degrees and warm enough for low 20's. he also took it to Canada in the winter when it got down to single digits and it still holds strong with a layer or two on the inside. runs true to size. got him a medium and he's 5'9, 30 inch waist, with a slim/athletic build.

where is the internal media pocket?

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
  • Fit: Runs large

Just received my order but the internal media pocket is nowhere to be found. Is the product description inaccurate or was I sent a wrong model? Happy with the jacket overall except that the interior mesh on the left chest size has a small opening as if slit open by a small knife - small defect which is no big deal but annoying.

Responded on

The slit is where you're supposed to thread through the headphones from the chest media pocket to keep the wire inside your jacket . There's a loop close to the neck that you can then thread the headphones through for additional support.

I wonder: did somebody tried that jacket on real conditions?
Especially for those who had to stay because of the blizzard.
Thank you

Responded on

I have used the jacket through two winter seasons of Colorado mountaineering; absolutely no complaints. I must admit however, I have not tested it in a real blizzard; heavy snow, 20-30 mph winds yes, but no white-out conditions. Sorry, I avoid blizzards.

I want to use this as a shell over my Patagonia Down Sweater. Every jacket I own is a large (except Helly Hansen). I know the sweater will compress but am wondering if a large might be too snug to layer under?

Unanswered Question

How much warmth does this softshell offer? I have a Arcteryx Beta AR hardshell that fits slightly loose (L, med was too small). I have a midweight baselayer and also wear a very high quality, med weight merino wool sweater over that. Also, does fit slimmer than the Denali? The Denali L fit fine in the shoulder, chest and arms but was too 'baggy' on me, too much so for a midlayer, and subsequently let too much cold air in and is not windproof.

Great coat

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share

I gave this coat to my husband for Christmas and he loves it. It is actually the 2nd one I have given him. My husband is someone who hates wearing winter coats because they are to bulky but this coat is perfect for him. He likes the pop of the orange color on the gray coat.

One of my favorites

I recieved this jacket for christmas last year, and it has been awsome. The abrasion proof Apex material works great, and it is very windproof. I've let some of my friends borrow it, and every time, they've been suprised at how warm and comfortable it is.

Great, as expected!

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift but have feedback to share
  • Fit: True to size

I love North Face, so when I bought this for my cousin, I knew it would not disappoint. No complaints about the warmth of the jacket, it fits him great, and works very well as a windbreaker. Fit is true to size and the color is as you see in the pictures on the website. Well worth the money for a great jacket.

I ordered these for our entire staff as a present at our annual meeting. The engineers love them and use them outdoors for field work in Michigan, Illinois, Utah, Montana, etc.
I wore mine proudly on a recent trip to London and Liverpool to cheer on Spurs and Liverpool. This with an appropriate Premier League scarf kept me toasty warm.

Awesome jacket!

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

I bought this jacket about 2 months ago and it's great! The inside has a really soft material to keep you warm, and the outside is a great windbreaking/water repelling material. I'm 6'1" 160 and I bought a small and it fits me well. Also love that the it has a bungie cord in the waist band to keep the wind from drafting in and freezing your nips! I've also spilled a few things on it already, and they're easily wiped off with a damp rag. I definitely recommend this jacket.

Versatile Jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is a great all-around jacket. Super comfortable and the material is very soft. Wind and rain resistant yet still very breathable and not stiff at all. Can be worn in a variety of temperatures - Not too warm when it's a little chilly but also does a good job cutting the wind and keeping warm down to 30 or so.
