For the North Face Apex Bionic Softshell Jacket - Men's L and XL, what is the length in the back of the jacket from the base of the neck to the bottom of the jacket, i.e. the body length?
Awesome Coat

Coat just arrived today, and it has definitely exceeded my expectations. I am 5'9" 162 lbs, and the medium fits perfectly. I tend to wear smalls, so I would say the coat runs a little small if anything. Often times, mediums have sleeves that are super long on me, but not this. Very good trimmer fit and excellent quality.
Bought the coat during a 25% off sale. Plus, Ebates.com was offering 10% cash back at Backcountry when I purchased, so I saved an additional $11 there. A $149 coat at Northface, and I got it for around $100 here! Thanks Backcountry!
Apex Bionic - My North Face of choice

I've been called the "North Face Poster Boy" many times by my friends - I seem to always be decked out in this brand. While I own a ton of other North Face products, my favorite of all time has been the Apex Bionic. I absolutely love this jacket. It's the perfect spring/fall jacket. It's light, but completely wind proof. It looks clean when it's on me. It's perfect for collecting various patches from my adventures. The synch cord in the bottom of the jacket is clutch for creating a more fitted look. To top it all off, the finally offered the jacket with the crazy green accent color that I love so much from North Face! Just replaced my old one with the asphalt grey/citronelle green color. I am 100% behind your purchase of this jacket - you won't be disappointed!

What's the difference between this and the Quantas?
Steven Jones
Member since
They are very similar. The Quantas has an "alpine" cut, which means that the fit is a little slimmer and the pockets a little higher than the bionic, to keep it out of the way of climbing gear.

Thank you Steven,I purchased the Quantas and will write a review on it after a couple rounds in it.
Great outerlayer

This goes great over a Denali or TKA 200 fleece, water - resistant and very good at wind-proofing insulating layers. Medium is just a tad too big for my 5'8" 162 lb frame but with a layer under it does the job.
Great fit!

Great looking jacket. Not for skiing in colder or stormy weather. however my husband is always almost hot so this jacket is perfect for everyday wear in New England and watching hockey at the rink.

I love this jacket. First got one for my ex wife for her birthday, quickly became jealous of it. Got the mens and it was amazing. I wear a tick hoodie under it as my winter coat, and just the Apex in the spring and fall for a wind breaker. Best jacket I have ever owned.

This is my first TNF Jacket. Traditionally, I'm a big supporter of Arc'teryx but wanted a causal jacket, a less expense, that gave me the ability to adjust the sleeve/wrist openings. I bought both the large and medium, and the large was great in the shoulders but made me look 7 months pregnant/gave an non tailored fit in the midsection. The medium worked out because the material stretches so I can layer up underneath and still keep a tailored fit through my midsection.
I can see the difference in quality between my Arc Jackets and TNF; in additional to the clientele they cater to. This jacket is sized to the masses in my opinion; if you're looking for a true technical piece- Go Fish!
My dimensions: 6'1 185-190, 41R suit, 16 x 34 dress shirt. 32 x 32 pant; and a fashion a tailored fitted in all my apparel
*MRSP on the Tag lists the jacket for 129.XX

"This jacket is great its fairly light weight and extremely warm but wont make you hot and sweaty. I used it recently on a 3 degree fishing trip and it kept me toasty warm. It's also a great waterproof jacket. I spill coffee on myself on a regular basis and this thing has yet to leak or stain, it works like a champ."

Love this jacket it is perfect for those spring or falls days you need a little more then a t shirt and most certainly don't need a heavy winter jacket.
I wear it running a lot and it keeps the wind out. Would recommend to anyone

I have had many complements on this green/orange jacket. Recently while visiting SouthCarolina it came in handy in the 60 degree weather.

This is exactly what my son wanted. It has been used every day since Christmas. The size runs true to other mens clothing.

As much as I would like to spend more time outdoors, the reality is most days I need casual outdoor solutions. I tried a couple Marmot jackets, but they were not as practical for casual use as this jacket. This is a great casual jacket with a little extra room to allow for casual layering (shirt and sweater, etc.). If you are looking for a more technical jacket I would go with TNF Palmyra or something from the Marmot line.

I know this is way late and you have probably already found an answer, but for future reference you can initiate a chat with a BC rep using the link at the top of the page. Best of luck!
Great Jacket, Wife loves it.

Originally bought the women's version for my wife to replace her old polar fleece jacket. The men's version fits better as she is 6'. She loves the wind protection and warmth in a light package yet it is stylish enough that she does not mind wearing off trail around town.
Quality built, but tight sleeves

Purchased the TNF Black Heather
The Apex Bionic is definitely a quality built jacket. I've purchased two previous models from BackCountry prior to this one; however, the sleeves on this jacket are much tighter than those on the older models I own .... unfortunately I'm going to have to return this one.
One note of caution regarding the color -- on the website the jacket appears to be more of a charcoal, which is what I was looking for -- it's much lighter in reality ... definitely more of a traditional light heather gray.
Great versatility

I was looking for a good overall jacket...lightweight, durable, but most of all versatile. Being from Bozeman, MT, where weather extremes can change back and forth daily, I needed something I could put over a hoodie, or more, on chilly days but wear comfortably on its own in a wide degree of temperatures, both in the mountains and around town. This jacket fits the bill perfectly. In the two weeks I've owned it I have used it daily, going to work, around town christmas shopping, hiking Hyalite Reservoir, skiing Big sky, and on a date to a local brewery on a Friday night, and was absolutely comfortable on all occasions. It currently is unusually warm here, so once temperatures drop, it will certainly need to be layered, but I have a winter jacket for that. It is fairly water resistant but not ideal for rain (which we had last night), and I wouldnt use it as a ski jacket unless it was unusually warm like it has been. Overall, the fit is pretty true to size, I am 6'0, 190 athletic build, got a Large and it fits well by itself or overtop a base layer. The jacket is Black Heather, and it is certainly a much lighter grey than the pictures on the site, but that is of no consequence to me. I would say this jacket will be able to handle 75% of my winter activities this year. Overall, if you are looking for a technical jacket that can stand up to deep winter activities, probably not the jacket for you, but a good versatile jacket that will be able to handle a wide range of moderate cold, and be good for light outdoor and backcountry fun. And Backcountry.com was quick, painless, and the shipping was fast and free
Good for nothing (outdoors anyways)

I mean that literally. This jacket has individual features that might be useful, but the whole is less than the sum of it's parts.
The outer face is a nice sturdy DWR soft shell material. Stands up to branches, thorns and rocks quite well. Sheds light precip for a few minutes, but more than 10-15 minutes in a steady drizzle will overwhelm it at the shoulders and start soaking through.
Then we have the fleece backer which adds no appreciable warmth and binds when you try to layer wool/fleece/cotton under it (poly slides OK). Better hope your layers have thumb holes, or your sleeves are going to be bunched entirely above your elbows.
So it's not warm and you can't easily layer under it. Well ok, but it's still a decent wind breaker with DWR finish right? Not really. The shell material doesn't breathe particularly well (and there are no pit vents/zips). Certainly not well enough to keep you dry at the temperatures this jacket will keep you comfortably warm in (40-60F) with any kind of aerobic activity.
It is nice for walking around the mall in, since there's no insulation you won't overheat like in a Denali.
2 Stars because the shell material is nice, without the binding fleece backer making it cumbersome as a shell I'd probably give it 3.5-4.
