It's hard to tell from the photo, but do these pants have good inner ankle abrasion protection for crampons?

Nothing for abrasion on these pants. If you are looking for a softshell pant that has abrasion protection, check out The North Face Randonee Pant - it has Kevlar reinforced patches for crampons/skis, and would be a more suitable softshell pant for skiing and climbing.
Hope this helps-

Great Pant

Bought these pants recently to use for early Spring/late Fall hiking. They are exactly as described. I took them up Mt. Washington on a day with winds 40-70mph and they held off the wind extremely well. We were hiking in snow 99% of the way as well, and I stayed completely dry. The performance fit proves to be a nice, tight fit and still gave plenty of room to move around while still feeling comfortable. I'm 5'10" 165lbs and I got the 30 regular. The waist is a LITTLE tight, but is very doable. The length is perfect. As other reviews state, these are not completely waterproof, but they seem to come very close. They also breathe very well.

It's usually better to size up. Keep in mind that in the winter you might have an additional base layer and you don't want your pants restricting your movement.

Obviously trying them on is always best, but if you don't have that option, remember you can always send them back to Backcountry if you don't like they way they fit.

I would try it on Robert. It's pretty easy to guess jacket sizes, but pants are a little trickier.

Good Overall, Versatile and Comfortable.

Overall good experience with these pants. I am 6'1" and generally wear 32x34 jeans; I have problems buying pants that I cannot choose the length as well as waist because they normally end up being too short. However, I bought the 32's in the Apex pants and the length is perfect. Plenty of room for a long underwear layer underneath too, also fit nicely over my ski boots and mountaineering boots.

I have used these for general cool weather trekking, spring backcountry skiing in the beartooths, and cold days on the lifts. I would say they are adequate for fall and spring conditions or high activity in colder winter situations, but if you are idle for long in extreme cold they are not enough. Not completely windproof or waterproof, so blowing blizzarding, or wet snows require a shell on the outside of these.
