Exceptional jacket

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer
  • Fit: True to size

This jacket has become one of my favorite active wear garments. When I first purchased it I thought it was a bit tight fitting. But after a few weeks of of use I became accustomed to the fit, and find it very comfortable. It is a rather close fitting cut--yet I am able to put up to 3 layers under it and still be comfortable.
I mainly bought it for winter use, and in that application it has served exceptionally well. I have done many hikes with this jacket in temps ranging from above freezing down to -10 F. At the lower range I wore a light weight merino wool undershirt, Patagonia mid weight flecce, and also brought along a second fleece in my pack just in case. As long as I am moving I could be very comfy with only the three layer (including the jacket as one of those) down to around 10F. Below that I might want one more light layer depending on the activity.
This jacket is very windproof as advertised. Another nice feature is that it is quite water resistant. It is not waterproof, but will keep you dry for close to a half hour in a moderate rain. One downside--it dries very slowly due to the nature of the material. But IMO the strengths of that material far outweigh this.
All in all, I like this jacket a lot. I would rate it as a 3 season jacket, as it is a bit too warm for summer use. For spring, winter and fall I love it.
Also, it is quite durable--after 1 year of use mine still looks very good. A couple of very minor abrasions have shown up, but I can tell it will last for several more years. I would recommend this jacket as a great multi purpose piece of active wear.

Its....OK

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: Runs small

Have had this for a while, and it is the jacket that I reach for the least. The lining makes layering tough, and on its own it needs a heavier liner. It is windproof, and with a coat or 3 of waterproofing it holds up to moisture well. I am upgrading to an Apex Elevation though.

What the difference between this and the bionic hoodie other than pocket count and color? I want to pair it with my Half Dome summit series shell for the winter.

The Android is made out of the following materials 75D 310 g/m (9.14 oz/yd) 100% polyester plain/fleece TNF? Apex ClimateBlock. The Bionic is made out of the following 90D 351 g/m TNF? Apex ClimateBlock?96% polyester, 4% elastane plain weave soft shell with fleece backer. The Bionic will be a bit heavier with a thicker face and has some stretch to it. I would use the Bionic as a stand alone jacket where the Android being a bit lighter might be nicer to layer with.

Responded on

Yeah went with the android since the bionic felt a bit thick when I tried it on somewhere else and I run hotter the the sun and don't want to end up soaked like a sponge . BC didn't have black in my size so now J-walking will be easier since now I'll be able to stop rush hour traffic with this super red jacket in the fall haha, thank for the help .

Great Jacket not what picture showed

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

The jacket is great everything I expected except the photo of the one I ordered showed black with a white north face logo bit I received black with a black logo. Not exactly what I wanted but the jacket is so incredible I kept it anyway. Please show exact product please.

Responded on

I got the black on black jacket even though it was not in the picture. Bate and switch style! I was told they ran out of white logo on black color and my size was not available again. Kept the jacket since i like it. Will be careful next time i order with this company.

Responded on

Bait, even.

I got the black on black as well - but I think that keeps it stylish enough for city use, while being nice and techy for the back country.

Just got it today and wear it right away.Chicago weather is getting warmer so it came just in the right time, thanks for Backcountry fast shipping and great customer service for facilitating my exchange. The jacket itself is awesome, this is my fourth TNF and will continue to patronize this brand.

Do these jackets need to be dry cleaned?...

Do these jackets need to be dry cleaned? My son threw away the cleaning instructions without reading.

Responded on

I wouldn't; dry cleaning might actually be worse for it since it uses chemicals other than water. Most jackets like this are fine if you wash them in cold water on a gentle cycle with some sort of very gentle detergent like Woolite. There are also dedicated products for jackets like this to clean and to maintain the water-resistant coating: wash with http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-softshell-proof-wash-in and then spray with http://www.backcountry.com/nikwax-softshell-proof-spray-on

I use Penguin Sportwash for all of my softshells, and have had excellent results. It gets them clean and smelling good, but doesn't strip the DWR finish or affect breathability.

Fall Jacket

  • Familiarity: I gave it as a gift

This jacket is great for fall but not so much for winter. It is waterproof and windproof which makes it great for fall weather. Super comfortable and looks good. People compliment me on the jacket all the time.

So is this version 2013 a standard fit or athletic? There are some conflicting reviews, thanks

Responded on

This jacket was designed around The North Faces Standard Fit model and should fit true to size. In regards to the conflicting reviews I would be interested as to what jackets they are comparing this to.

Responded on

North Face says this jacket has a "Standard Fit" (from the North Face site).

Hope this Helps any who might still be wondering!

Good North Face jacket!

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times
  • Fit: True to size

This is a good and warm jacket. The only problem I have is the hood is a bit big and bulky when not in use. People have commented that it looks like a Walls jacket. It is a good buy for the price. The service was great as well, I ordered old school (telephone) Paul was very helpful.

Great Jacket

This jacket is awesome. It fits very well for me, a little slim and sleeves are long enough. Surprisingly good wind and water resistance as well as being very comfortable. I am 6' and slim, I ordered a large and love the fit

Love it.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

This is perhaps the best jacket I have ever purchased. It is comfortable and fits well. It is both water and wind resistant but still breathes surprisingly well. I live in Idaho where we see subzero temperatures with high winds daily in the winter. I often wore only this and a shirt and as long as I was moving I was warm. I purchased the khaki and orange version and get compliments on it nearly every time I wear it. It works in a wide range of temperatures. I bought it for fall and spring, it definitely does the job. With a fleece underneath it would be a great winter jacket.

if you add a fleece, would this jacket be a better winter jacket, and would hold up well with a winter storm. sorry for the newb question

Responded on

Howdy Nick, thanks for the question.
This is a great jacket for active use in the winter, it is a softshell which means it is highly water resistant (but not waterproof). The fabric is highly breathable, which makes it suitable for active winter pursuits. However, if you live in a wet climate and won't be doing aerobic things, you may want to consider a hard shell which will actually be waterproof.

Incredible jacket!

Okay, folks...this one's for keeps!

Given my height and body frame (6ft with wide, broad shoulders... aka today's standard "athletic cut" ), it takes me a long time to find a jacket that is not too tight --- where I can amply and easily move my arms up and down and left to right without feeling constrained in the armpits), and also one that is neither too thin or too bulky.

The NF Apex Android fits the bill to a tee.

Personally, because I tend to shoot for jackets that fit a casual cool setting (meaning I can where it easily in the office and still be professional looking, or outside where it has a street coolness to it), I purchased the utility brown with the orange details. I must say that as far as looks and functionality are concerned where usually one is sacrificed for the other, this one actually is a 2-fer where nothing is sacrificed. Now how often do you find something like this?

Way to go, North Face. And Backcountry -- kudos to you for carrying quality clothing that lasts a lifetime.

Which soft shell is heavier ? The apex android or elevation?

The elevation is heavier at 992 g.
If you mean in terms of warmth, the elevation is insulated, while the android is not.

Shell +1

This is a quality product, and looks great too!

The Apex Bionic and Android products are perfect if you are looking for a slim fitting shell that also also moves and flexes with you when active. The fabric is very flexible, yet is still a good shell against the wind and light rain.

You should know, however, that thermal retention is not its strong suit, and needs a layer underneath for sub-freezing temperatures. 50 degrees and up? A t-shirt for most will suffice!

As is typical with most shells, it could stand to be a bit more breathable. Things can get a bit clammy underneath when active, so layer accordingly.

This is my third Apex garment, and I will be back again. It's a bit more specialized than many may realize, but quite appropriate for casual wear too.

Nice Jacket

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

I've owned the jacket for about a year now and using it while hiking, snowboarding, in 75 mph windstorms, temps of 12-18 degrees and I am well pleased. It will run very warm if layered properly. I'm a little husky at 5'8" & 225 lbs. and the XL fit perfect. The one complaint I have is the lack of a real hook & loop (velcro) fastener on the wrist cuffs. The plastic straps have a plastic hook that doesn't necessarily grab the loop portion on the sleeve. I have also one more con, there are no vents in the pits. I would like to be able to have some vents here when I'm very active. I also get many compliments on the jacket, asphalt/green.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

Simple, warm, durable and comfortable: Love it. I have used this jacket while hiking, climbing and snowboarding in addition to everyday wear in all sorts of conditions and it kept me warm through it all. You still need a shell in wetter conditions to keep you dry, but holds up nicely in light rain and high winds.
