Description

Lightweight without losing the perks.

The E-Vap mesh shoulder harness and waist-belt on The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack help reduce pack-strap sweat on your fast hikes, and lumbar padding means your back doesn’t have to suffer just because you went with a lightweight backpack. If you don’t need the waist-belt, simply stow it out of the way. The large stretch front pocket holds trail maps and sunscreen and side pockets hold water bottles. Pull the rain cover out of its zippered pocket to keep your gear dry when it starts drizzling on the trail.

The North Face Angstrom 30 Daypack

I purchased the Angstrom 30 at a different store. The bag is very light, has good organization, is very sleek and has good capacity. The included rain cover is very useful, however is sometimes hard to get out of the tiny compartment which is placed in the water bottle holster. Even though it frustrates me, I put it in the zipper compartment in the secondary compartment. The rain cover has velcro straps to attach to the top handle so it does not fly away. You can also attach it by pulling out the plastic piece from the inside through the hydration sleeve hole and click the draw-string into the piece. My biggest concern was when the hip buckle cracked, however when I called The North Face, they shipped me a much better, stronger buckle, which is part of the reason I am giving it five stars.

Great Day Pack

I've owned this backpack for about 2 years and I take it everywhere: The beach, to work, extended cycling workouts, the Jungle. Everywhere! It's greatest strength is its versatility. Here's my list of pros and cons for your edification:

Pros:
- Very light, and comfortable as long as it's not overstuffed
- Laptop Sleeve
- The laptop sleeve doubles as a hydration sleeve and it keeps my water COLD even at the beach. Just through an over sized bottle in there and you're good all day.
- The Style is very sleek
- It's pretty durable despite the light weight (no rips or even rubs in mine. All Zippers work perfectly)
- It's pretty well divided with pockets, and the outer pouch (no zipper) is pretty useful
- The internal soft frame allows for airflow in the back, so you don't get crazy sweaty (BiG PLUS!)
- Dual external bottle holders are nice. A bit small for 32 oz drink, better for 20-24 oz bottle

Cons:
- I wish the front zip pocket was organized a little better. There's a shalllow section and a deep section, but the shallow section is REALLY shallow, and tends to cover the deep section so you can't easily see what's at the bottom (I've forgotten about granola bars for 6 months down there. Gross!

- The water bottle holders stretch out if you put a 32 oz nalgene in there, so be aware if you intend to put smaller bottles in later. The 20 oz Podium Chill bottle is a great one to use.

I paid full price ($100) which is double the second most expensive daypack I've owned, but I would do it again in a second if I lost this one. It's great!

Great pack.

Badass. Light, no fuss, perfect for what it's supposed to be, a lightweight, grab & go sack. Fits comfortably (6'2" 200 lbs), and would probably fit a shorter person a little better. The only retarded thing is where the rain cover is located. It zips down into the bottle pouch which makes it annoyingly awkward to get to. It should be on the bottom. That's my only complaint to far. Best book/bike/boarding/day hike bag so far. Also, the hip belt has a mesh pouch on the right side for little things like chapstick, keys, etc. I didn't know that when I purchased and it was a cool surprise. And the whistle is loud as f@*%.

Hey George I have a HP Probook and the dimensions are about 14 3/4" X 9 3/4" X 1 1/4" and it fits this packs hydration pocket/sleeve on the inside of the backpanel pretty well. There is a little extra space but not much. If you didn't put it in this pocket/sleeve you could probably fit an even longer computer and a little wider. Putting it in the sleeve is nice though because it keeps your computer off the ground when you set your pack down. See the pic for a look at how it fits.

I keep my 15.4" Wide-Screen notebook in there with an extended battery. I would say that is pretty close to the max size. I don't think you'll fit a 17"

Could be awesome..errr

I've owned this for over 8 months, and I use it everyday, but, it could have been designed a little better. I agree with Carlos' review, that says it's tough to really pack this thing the way it should be packed. Make no mistake though, you can stuff it to capacity, and it will hold.

The zippers may seem light but they have yet to fail. The back support and padded shoulder and hip straps are definitely a nice bonus on a backpack of this size. I've stuffed my 15in Mac Pro, a sh*t-ton of cables and cords, mics, and anything else needed for a mobile recording session, including an 8-channel interface, and this thing held up perfectly. In fact, I had so much stuff I couldn't even zip the main compartment the whole way.

The only thing that could make this the perfect day pack would be if the material around the secondary and tertiary compartments expanded just a little more.

Regardless, this pack does exactly what it needs to, and has never even come close to let me down. Multiple storage pouches in the secondary compartment for ipod, cell phone, or whatever goodies you choose. Two water bottle holders on the outside. Haven't used the rain cover, but it's a nice touch. Bungee cords over the tertiary compartment are nice to stuff a light jacket, or gloves, or whatever else may fit and can be exposed to the elements.

Overall, I really like this backpack, would buy it again, and definitely recommend it to friends and strangers.

The North Face Angstrom 30 Backpack

Eventhough the 1830 cu should hold a bunch of stuff, I think the way the backpack was created and arranged makes it hard to get as much stuff in it and it should hold.

Excuse the overly simple question, but what are the bungee cord straps for? Are they used to carry additional items or just to compress the bag?

Responded on

The bungee cord is not to compress the pack but to hold additional items like a rain jacket or something you want to have handy or easily accessible.

My 2 Cents

I've had this bag for about a week. I love it, but have to admit that there are a few kinks.PROS:-perfect for the purpose it was designed for which is fast-packing / light hiking.-it's very comfortable to run with even when loaded up.-laptop is very secure in the sleeve as the back support give it extra protection.CONS (which I can't really fault the bag for because it was designed to NOT have these characteristics):-I would like a little more room. Max I can fit comfortably is two textbooks a laptop and a light lunch.-I'd like heavier duty zippers. This comes with lightweight - light duty zippers.-rain cover design can be improved upon. It doesn't quite wrap around the entire bag like other backpack rain covers I've seen.-the thin straps make it a bit uncomfortable to carry heavier loads. With that said this pack is great if you use it for it's intended purpose if fast packing / light hiking. It's also great for pack for traveling (came in handy when I had to sprint to my Southwest flight the other night). For students, it's fine if you don't have to carry a lot of books.

would this backpack be any good for school (lots of books, binders, lab gear-- grad school :)). time for a new backpack but I prefer something versitile, lightweight and durable for hiking as well since I dont want to purchase 2 different packs. i'm thinking about the recon as well

Responded on

Hey Jessie- This is probably the best pack that I can think of for the type of use that you describe. It has plenty of room for books etc., but is quite a bit lighter for hiking trips. It would be a great choice.

Responded on

I use this pack for school everyday. I am in middleschool and a total gear freak, but i really love this pack and recommend it to anyone.

Responded on

I'm a business student and find this pack to be a bit on the small side for college duty. When fully loaded, it's tough on the shoulders because of the lightly padded straps.

This is very versatile and lightweight; durability of the zippers worries me because it's lightweight. BUT North Face warranty covers it and can attest to their great customer service. My pack was missing it's rain cover when I purchased it and a 2 minute phone call got a free replacement. No charge or shipping.

Their warranty department is in San Leandro, CA which happens to be 15 minutes away from me. If you be nice to the operator, you can pick up warranty items to avoid waiting for shipping.

For the students out there, how many books, binders, laptops do you carry around in this backpack? (Please list the inches if possible)Thanks

Can the front stretch pocket hold something as large as a bike helmet? or a pair of shoes?

Responded on

Definately i carry it all over with a pair of shoes a bike helmet and a laptop.

Responded on

When the main compartment is lightly loaded, then yes you can fit a helmet or shoes in the stretch pocket. By lightly loaded, I mean a laptop and a book; any more and using the stretch pocket becomes troublesome.

What's the "official" way to attach the top part of the rain cover? it's got the 2 sets of velcro straps, do they attach to the elastic bands on the sholder straps? Just personally doesn't feel right attached there.

Thanks,
Brian

Responded on

I always attach them around the handle on the top. But i don't really feel like that is right either.

Responded on

You can attach it by pulling out the plastic piece from the inside through the hydration sleeve hole and click the rain cover's draw-string into the piece

Is the front pocket laptop compatible

Responded on

The pack has a sleeve in the main compartment for a laptop with a stay put center velco strap. I'm pretty sure the front pocket could hold a laptop as it is very "strechy", but I don't think it would be very safe.

What size hydration reservoir does this pack accept? Camelbak 100 oz?

Thanks, Tom

Best Answer Responded on

Any pack over 22L should be compatible with 100 oz. bladder.

Responded on

The camelbak 100oz unbottle fits nicely in the laptop/water reservoir pocket in the main compartment.
