Add The North Face Alteo 35 Backpack to your collection and always have a lightweight pack for an overnight trip or an extended day hike that requires additional gear. Smartly executed and designed to nail the balance between weight and comfort, this pack utilizes a supportive aluminum frame attached to a tramponline-style back panel. This combination keeps the structure of the pack lightweight while allowing air to flow between your back and the pack so hot days won't slow you down. Stash a compact sleeping bag, a small tent, and a couple days worth of food inside the moderate, 35-liter main compartment, strap your sleeping pad to the outside, and hit the trail.

  • Trampoline back panel creates a channel of air between your back and the pack so excess heat can move away from your back
  • Aluminum frame feels lightweight and offers plenty of support for carrying a heavy load
  • Top pocket is removable to save weight or use the top as a storage solution inside your tent
  • An array of interior and exterior pockets give you quick access to small essentials like nutrition, a headlamp, ID, and more
  • Integrated rain cover allows you to quickly cover your pack in the even of wet weather

Awkward shape makes it hard to fit gear.

  • Familiarity:I've used it several times

I picked this up on clearance looking for a simple single-pocket climbing/hiking daypack. The pack seems durable and comfortable enough, but the major problem for me is that it's really hard to get gear to fit in here compared to other packs of similar volume. This is due to the bulge in the back designed to keep your back cool and dry, which to me seems a lot more aggressive than necessary. It's really easy to end up with a lot unused space in the pack above and below the bulge unless you somehow manage to pack everything to fit perfectly around it, which is really inconvenient since the pack doesn't have side zips.

This pretty much collects dust for me since I have better packs in similar sizes. Wouldn't recommend.

Not impressed

I tried to like the Alteo 35 but couldn't manage, firstly the plastic S shaped "wind tunnel" bulges in to the pack making things hard to pack. While doing so, it also renders the shape of the bag like an elbow macaroni noodle. The Compression straps are useless, placed right in the center where the giant macaroni elbow is formed. Cinching down on these would just exaggerate the shape more. Also the place where the compression straps are attached to, are right where your shoulders meet the the pack, lets just say the "trampoline style back panel" doesn't accommodate to this very well. The integrated rain cover isn't integrated at all, and is just loose in the pack. Also its not sized large enough to cover the pack if something is strapped to the bottom. Will look at more options and return this one.

    I'm happy

    • Familiarity:I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Just got the pack a couple days ago, as always, backcountry had great shipping and packaging.

The bag is light for it's size, the material seems really sturdy and the fit and finish is excellent. I wish there was a way to raise the shoulder attachment point, but it's fixed to the frame, eventually I was able to get it seated well. I have a 20" torso and I got the medium. The waist pouches are roomy and I fit a nalgene (just barely) in the water pouches when the pack was stuffed. a 750mL bottle fits better though. There are the right number of clips and mounting points on the bag to be really versetile, I especially like the design of the little stretch tabs you can tighten on the outside for trekking poles or whatnot.

My biggest complaint has to do with the S curve for the "air flow" system. I think it's a bit overdone. It feels like I can stick my whole arm through the gap between the pack and my back. While I'm sure this generates good ventilation, it's makes loading the pack awkward. The hydration sleeve lies right on top of the curved plastic. With a 2L bladder in the hydration sleeve, the bag becomes very narrow in the center. That being said, the bag is fairly spacious, it's just not cavernous. there are two interior mesh pockets that would be completely inaccesible if the bag were full. As my test, I managed to fit the following inside the main compartment pack: (this doesnt count the extra space on the outside, hip pockets, top case, etc.) Climbing shoes, rack of draws, rain coat, 60m rope, 2L hydration bladder.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with it.

    Great Pack

    • Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer

Had originally purchased this pack for some overnight trips but I now use it to haul my climbing gear when heading up to a wall. I love the ventilated back! Has just enough room for all of my gear including rope. Overall, a great purchase!

Does this version of the alteo 35 have the side access to the main compartment? In other words, is there a way to get to the bottom contents of the bag without having to empty out the bag?

I own this bag and purchased it from this website.

The front right side does have a zipper that allows you to access down to the bottom 2/3 or so "fairly" easily.

Jared Downs, if you have a pack handy the zipper is kind of tucked away.

My bag looks identical to the one in the photo, except in burnt orange. Perhaps mine is an older version though?

The version does concern me. This web review points out that different year versions don't have the side zip.

Quote, " I have seen newer models of the Alteo 35 with a zipped access on the side for quicker access to items at the bottom. Sadly, our model does not have this feature."

This is why I didn't pick this yet. If it has the side zip, I would have got this by now. Thanks for the feedback. Ryan, how long ago did you get the bag from here?
