When the design team at Teravail sat down to dream up the Cannonball Premium Tubeless Tire, it's pretty obvious that they weren't in a design lab, or a boardroom, or even the office lunch room. Instead, we suspect that they were sitting down in the saddle, and the backdrop wasn’t corporate motivational posters but the gravel strips crisscrossing the Flint Hills of Kansas. We can't confirm this, but we think spending a day with the Cannonball Premium on ungraded, unmaintained gravel "roads" is proof enough.
The tire's 120 TPI AX Casing is about as plush as we'd go for gravel grinding because higher TPI tires tend to fare less well on the durability scale. Unlike the standard, 60 TPI Cannonball, whose flat protection only spans the tread, the Cannonball Premium has reinforcement from bead to bead. That added protection goes some way toward addressing the common draw backs with plusher tires and further recommends the Cannonball Premium for use where sharp gravel is an ever-present threat to sidewalls.
The Premium does weigh a claimed 510g, which is 10g heavier than the standard version. If we were looking to put the Cannonball Premiums on a superlight climbing bike, well, we wouldn't put them on a superlight climbing bike. And neither should you. But if you're on a long, stable gravel machine with disc brakes, wide rims, and big tire clearance (read: more concerned about ride quality than weight) then yeah — this is one of the best gravel adventure tires you can run.
