Setting up your rod
Fish on
I haven't had much time to put it to use but cant wait till i can! I got this rod for my backpacking bag. its light weight and easy to store . but with all these great reviews do i need to say more? fish on!
Lots of fun!
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
This rod is a ton of fun! Finally got to take it out 3 days this last week and caught about 50 rainbows & brown from 7"-16". It takes a bit more finesse to bring em in without a reel but it makes for a fun fight even on the smaller guys. I was using pheasant tails so I can't speak to how well the tenkara flies work yet but the rod is great.
This was my second attempt with tenkara. My first was with a Tenkara USA rod that came with level line and it was just terrible, after this experience I'll say it probably would have performed much better if I used a furled line like this set comes with but I am very happy with this rod as well as the price compared to some of the other companies. This will likely become my go to rod for the smaller streams because of how fun it is & is less to carry as far as gear & weight goes. Not to mention everyone on the stream was in awe of a telescoping rod without a reel like it was from the moon haha.
This is also a good rod to use as a trainer for someone interested in fly fishing. My wife has taken a fly fishing class & I've tried to teach her but when she gets a hit the reel & slack line become to much for her to manage. I think letting her catch a couple on this will help her transition to the fly rod/reel setup, you get to focus more on just casting & the hook set without worrying about fumbling.
New to Tenkara
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
Been fly fishing for years and added a Tenkara rod to my collection because it's fun, lightweight, and packable. This one has been great for the small waters in the canyons near my house and on a trip that I took to Switzerland to fish high mountain waters.
Transformative Take on Fly Fishing
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I highly recommend the Tenkara setup for smaller streams and even bigger streams where you might run into something much bigger. Without a whole reel of fly line, the Tenkara forces you to get into better position, be stealthier, and be closer to the take. This is an absolutely amazing experience when you are dry fly fishing and you are able to skitter a caddis across or hop a hopper on the water to simulate bug behavior. I've lost a bunch of big fish, and had to chase them along the bank or in the water but that is a part of the experience. Been fly fishing for 20 years, the experience from a Tenkara rod is impossible to beat. Get one!
So light
Perfect for backcountry adventures. Takes up no room in the pack and the design is so simple.
Sometimes simple is the best way to go
- Familiarity:I've put it through the wringer
I've been using my Tenkara since this past spring. It's simple design and mobility makes it a great companion for impromptu fishing excursions and it's compact design allows it to be an easy addition to a day pack. I always keep it in my van just in case I spot a creek from the road. In just the past few months it's versatility has been tested in Washington state, and Wyoming in small creeks, high flow of the Snake and eddies on the edge of the white water.
The Tenkara Rod Co kit comes with all the pieces you need to get you started. Great for the beginners and the subtle action is perfect for mastering you light touch.
Simple, back-to-basics fishing
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
When you’re sick of toting around a bunch of extra stuff, a Tenkara rod is the way to go on a small/medium river. It feels natural to use, is light, and telescopes to a very manageable size. The included wooden line holder lets you keep your setup as it is, telescope the rod down, and hike around to new spots without fumbling over a full-length rod.
This kit is a great intro fly fishing because you can literally start right out of the box. I enjoyed the simplicity of using nothing more than a rod, a line, and a fly. I also can’t wait to try this out as a backpacking rod. Given its small size and light weight, it’s sure to be a winner. If you want to go simple, go Tenkara.
Perfect entry into fishing
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
This rod combo is so fun and easy that it made me interested in fishing again after 15 years. I've been fishing 6 times in 20 years, and all of them in the last month since owning this package.
So why is that? Fly placement is so easy, it is just plain fun to fish this way. I have found the flex to be really useful for a slingshot style cast in the trees too. That, coupled with the great length has gotten a fly into some tiny holes in the trees; places a regular rod would not have worked.
Quality is awesome. I love the Backcountry branding and the included tippet and flies. The included flies are well made, which I did not expect at the price. The wooden line holder and aluminum twist container for the flies is great for portability too, and it can easily hold 3-4 additional flies to customize your aresenal.
I have gotten some funny looks at the river and little mountain ponds, and one "what is that" comment, but it all subsides when you pack up and walk out with a collapsed rod in a tight little tube.
This setup will definitely continue to make it on any hiking/camping trips, and makes a great quick river play on the way home from work.
Now for feedback-
It would be nice if there was an instruction sheet with some basic tenkara knots, since the special furled line and leader have unique (and awesome) connection methods. However, googling "tenkara knots" had the exact information I needed, so it's a minor issue.
Also, the photos show a green furled line, mine came with a natural or off-white color line. I wish it had been green, as I think that would have been easier to see on recovery.

This set is a great deal if you are wanting to try tenkara. This is my second tenkara rod. I wish it would have been my first!
Tenkara Demystified
If you are like me and didn't quite grasp the function of this rod then watch this. I can see some merits and the application and it could have a place in the core fly fisherperson's quiver.
Quality and Simplicity
- Familiarity:I've used it several times
I'm not the most experienced fly fisher, and this is my first tenkara rod, but I've got to say the craftsmanship of this rod is outstanding. The rod has good feel, a nice grip, and if I can catch something with it, then this is a great setup for beginners and advanced users. Comes with a solid rod case and all you need to get on the water. This will definitely come with me on my next trip out to the streams and lakes of the Uintas.
Lunch Break on the Middle Provo
Mmmmm brook trout.
Come on Alex. That's a brown. :) Are the midge working on the Provo right now? I'll be back the first week of March and may try to hit the start of the BWO's.
Midges are working. BWO's will start taking off here real soon. Some good fishing weather.
hey, I'm a pretty avid saltwater fisherman, but i don't have much access to small streams and lakes in my area. However the design still interests me, i like how there is no metal reel to corrode, do you think this rod would have any saltwater role? (our fish tend to be bigger, 15+ inches)
I would not use it for saltwater. It can handle larger fish, but 15-20in is probably the max. If you are fishing from the beach and are able to move with the fish I would give it a try....worse case you break the tip and have to get a new tip, which usually are pretty inexpensive. There are other brands of tenkara rods that are more suitable for larger fish. This is not one of them though.
hows does included fly line with loop attach to tenkara rod?
This youtube video is simple and fairly easy to follow. The line attaches to the rod using a simple knot. This video shows how to do so and get you out there fishing.

Hey kyle, I've broken the tip on my rod and called Tenkara directly. They were friendly and mailed me the last two sections for free. They arrived to SLC in two days. Great customer service.

Would you be able to provide more information on the rod' s specifications - weight (ounces), flex (6:4?), closed length (inches)?
Hi T,
The action is a 6:4 and it closes down to 20 inches and weighs 3.4 ounces

Honestly, I'm not a core fisherperson but I still really enjoy Tenkara because its basic. Perfect for the core backpacker who knows they will be crossing rivers and will have some free-time.
