Sweet on the beach, even sweeter in the whitewater.

Sweet Protection made its Men's Shambala Paddle Shorts for whitewater charging even though these shorts look pretty sweet on the beach too. The neoprene liner adds warmth and extra protection from cold rivers, and the nylon shell has a DWR coating to resist water and wind. Sweet Protection also added Lycra panels for an ease of movement whether you're portaging your boat or sitting in it, The articulated fit includes a curved waist and 3/4 length for ideal coverage when you're paddling. Sweet Protection also added a zippered pocket at the leg that you can always access.

Winter, Spring and Fall Paddling Short

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Whether there is snow on the ground or its just getting ready to be summer these shorts can keep me warm! I was originally a bit off-put by how goofy these shorts look but the functionality is insane. The .5mm neoprene is super warm and kept me comfy on days down to around 40 deg f, even when there was snow on the ground those days. My personal thought is anywhere between 60 and 40 these are pretty ideal. If you don't have a drysuit these are the perfect combo move with a drytop to keep your lower half warm. My only gripe is they don't make a pair without the liner for the summer days! Also an added bonus of the neoprene is that it also pads your knees inside the kayak keeping them comfy in the thigh hooks all day! Photo by Hank Hibbert

Great 4 "In Between" weather conditions

    • Familiarity: I've used it several times

To me, there are 3 general paddling weather conditions. Hot, In Between, and Cold conditions. I feel these shorts are great for those "In Between" days. Where it's not quite cold or chilly enough for a dry suit, but the weather (or water) is not hot enough for normal board shorts. The very thick neoprene keeps you really toasty, but people can't even tell you're wearing neoprene (unlike a surfer) because it has a nylon shell that looks pretty cool, the pics on here are pretty accurate.

The waist cinches are nice too because i just tuck my upper base layer and/or my inner liner of my drytop into the shorts and that helps with any unwanted gaps (Like plumber's crack)

One caveat, if you wear these shorts on hot days, you will definitely bake in them. Also, I am not sure if you can wash these? I don't want to take the risk, so I just soak them in a neoprene safe soap/cleaner. I also wish they had another pocket in the wallet area, but I understand why they didn't include it.

One tip - The neoprene goes over my knee cap almost to my upper shin. If you get really long neoprene water socks that go under your water shoes, you can almost turn your outfit into a full lower body neoprene pants for days you want a little more warmth.

Are these shorts good for surfing?
