Description

Hiker-tested, 14th-century explorer approved.

In today's developed world, most people would be lost without a cell phone. Since you regularly trek into cellular signal doldrums, bringing along the analog Suunto MC-2 Compass is necessary for old-school orientation while deep in the wilder parts of the world. Housed neatly in a fold-up case, this mirror compass points you in the right direction without needing batteries, signals, or fair weather for optimal performance.

  • With a little orienteering experience, this analog, liquid-filled compass provides reliable bearings with its sighting mirror and V-notch
  • Adjustable declination (with included key) lets you manually account for a difference between magnetic and true north, so you can get the most accurate readings
  • Two-zone geographical balancing system allows easy use in the southern hemisphere
  • Night orienting possible thanks to luminous two-color bezel
  • Silicon grip on the base doesn't slide around on a map while you orient
  • Slope meter lets you evaluate avalanche risk during backcountry travel
  • Lanyard keeps the compass close so you don't veer off course

Is there a difference between this and the Suunto MC-2 Pro?

Great price, nice compass

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

If you're using a compass for anything more than making sure the sun still comes up in the eastern horizon, this one is a nice tool chest of what a field compass should be, and at a nice price as well. The slopemeter is there to use in the backcountry in the winter time, and with the mirror and target sight, you can triangulate your position, and signal for an efficient rescue if need be.

Old dog=new tricks

  • Gender: Male
  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I was going to return this compass because it didn't quite seem up to par with what I had been accustomed to. After giving it a second look and actually using it in the field I have decided to keep this compass. It is light and easy to use. Turned out to be a good purchase.

Most important tool in the outdoors.

  • Familiarity: I've put it through the wringer

A map and compass is the single most important tool to take with you in the wilderness (along with the knowledge on how to use them.) This Suunto is perfect for anything and everything you need to find your way out in the sticks. Just don't forget to set the declination for you location for true north. This compass is accurate, well built and sturdy with all the bells and whistles. A great compass.

I have used this compass for many years now, slope is easy to use. No issues, didn't need the Global one so I saved a few bucks.

One more question, I think it says it in the description but I would just like to confirm: can this be used as effectively in the southern hemisphere (i.e. patagonia)? Is there an adjustment that I have to make (i.e. adjust declination, etc.)?

Thank you!

Oh and what is the difference between this compass and the MC-2G (http://www.backcountry.com/suunto-mc-2g-navigator-global-compass) other than the price?

Best Answer Responded on

The MC-2G is a "Global" compass which means you can use in the southern and northern hemisphere. The MC 2 is not global(you cannot use in patagonia). Does that answer your questions?

Responded on

THE MC2G IS THE GLOBAL COMPASS....YES, YOU CAN USE IN THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE. YOU WILL NEED TO MAKE A SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT....SPECIFIC IN THE OWNERS MANUAL.

The price gets you the Global needle which sits flat wherever you are in the globe, and is the most stable needle in any compass. An additional benefit is that it will work well even if the compass is held at an angle of up to 20 degrees. Declination will need to be adjusted (or allowed for) wherever you are in the world - there are maps for this and it varies quite a bit across North America.

Hi, where is this compass made in?

Great Tool

Great features - inclinometer works well- a little tricky, but very beneficial for numerous uses, clear and distinct markings/lines and numbers.

Sturdy design

I bought this for the slope meter. I may be doing something wrong, but the slope needle seems to "stick". Compass is light weight, slim, and sturdy.
