Description

Find your way, even at night, with help from the Suunto M-3DL Compass' luminous bezel.

Suunto gave the M-3DL Compass adjustable declination to make math simple when you need to find your way and a luminous bezel to aid in night navigation. The M-3DL is an ideal compass for your next long-distance hike or adventure race. Suunto also added a magnifying glass to help you read your map more accurately, so you know if you need to go thorough a valley or up a ridge.

M-3DL meets the compass requirement for Civil Air Patrol ground search gear. It often becomes the mission compass over other types and brands. Clear markings and easy-to-use functions make this rugged tool a team leader's "We will use this one"compass.

I've used this compass for three years (except for a short stint where I lost it - see my review of the Suunto M-2D). The compass feels nice in hand, it's light (1.5 oz without lanyard), the readings are accurate (I guess I have to assume they're accurate) and the declination is adjustable. The base plate has rubber feet (to keep it from sliding around on map). I can't imagine that I'll ever use the glow-in-the-dark feature, but it looks nifty. I like this compass so much that, when lost, I bought another. Recommended.

I've been using this compass for a couple years, primarily for Orienteering events and Adventure Races. It has performed well in a variety of situations and shows no signs of wear. The measurements on the baseplate are handy as is the magnifying lens. It's easy to adjust for declination, but once you set it, you don't have to worry about it slipping.

Most importantly, the needle is quick to point north.

I know this isn't technically the right...

I know this isn't technically the right product but they don't have the actual one to ask. I have an Suunto M-3GL Compass. All docs tell me it has an adjustable declination but the tiny little manual that came with it does not mention adjusting it. Does anyone know how to adjust it? The back of the baseplate has a tiny little screw but I can't seem to loosen it. I have searched the suunto.com website and they just allow me to D/L the manual that came with it. Any help would be appreciated.

Surprise surprise, I figured it out. You just have to turn it (either left or right) until the "declination mark" is set to the correct +/- degrees for your current location.

Yeah, I had the same operator incompetence too. Works well though once you know how to set.

It has a longer straight edge, declination, measurements and still nice and small for my pocket. I have used it for many years and still performs like new, great for nearly everything you could need a compass for. Would be nice to have a mirror on it for more accurate readings. Very similar to the Suunto M-3G Global Compass but without a Global needle and with declination adjustment.
