NEVER GET LOST

  • Familiarity: I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

Cool, small, classic compass. Better to have in a backpack than not to. Highly recommended.

It's still what I use most

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

Despite the creation of the GPS and the despite the number of watches that have compasses built in, I still love using this. I wouldn't say I'm a great navigator, but this gives me peace of mind that I'm still headed in the right direction. I have used this on about15 backpacking trips.

Don't over-complicate

  • Familiarity: I've used it several times

I debated a long time about dropping a lot of money on a good map compass until I realized that this is a really good map compass! If you are orienteering obsessed there is probably a better more sophisticated compass out there. But if you are like me and just want something solid, this is a workhorse.

Small and simple

I've had this for a long time. I don't use it a lot, but it works when I need it. It's small enough to just throw it in my pack whenever I go out. I'm totally not knowledgeable enough to be able to use some of the super deluxe compasses. This model does what I need it to do.

Simple

This thing isn't full feature packed, but that's great for keeping it simple. This thing just has the necessities for basic compass use.

Good Basic Compass

I picked this up to keep in my backcountry ski pack, its just a basic compass that is super simple. It is a lower end compass but good to have in the pack. For me its just a back up item, because where I tour here in the wasatch mountains I know the terrain and area super well. If you are looking for a compass that will be more detailed and reliable for longer trips or more expedition and longer ski tours in unknown areas. I would suggest looking into some of Suuntos higher end compasses such as the, http://www.backcountry.com/suunto-mc-2-pro-compass The MC-s Pro compass.

Are these compasses Northern or Southern hemisphere?

Best Answer Responded on

Hey Jim, good question... basically the compasses are the same except the painting/weight of the needle...

Here's an explanation:

Basically this means that in the northern hemisphere, the north end of the needle is pulled downwards toward the magnetic north pole and thus the south end of the needle is counter-weighted to balance the needle. So, when you use a northern hemisphere compass in the southern hemisphere, the south end of the magnet is pulled downwards by the magnetic field and is also heavier than the north end - which could result in the needle catching and dragging on the bottom of the compass housing when the compass is held horizontal.

So if you purchase a compass that is liquid filled, it will help...

Not sure why the drop down selection says "Northern Hemisphere" because this particular compass is a "GLOBAL" compass, meaning the needle isn't counter weighted and can be used world wide...

Good compass

Good compass for the money. It has nice features like the different rulers for mapping distance and the compass works well and functions smoothly.

Small, inexpensive and accurate.

This may be the low end of Suunto's compass lineup but it really shines as a backup to your gps or as an inexpensive must-have that you can throw in your pack and forget until you need it. Remember, you should never be without a manual compass in the backwoods (or a map either...) Now you have no excuse, so buy one and make it back even if your batteries fail on your gps. Oh yeah, and please learn how to use it; manual compasses have been used for longer than anyone needs to remember and they work quite well.
