It is good for starters, but...

Black Diamond Big Air Package

Rating for this product: 3 April 5, 2006

The biggest problem with these types of belay devices is that they don't have the "V" feature for locking off like the Black diamond ATC-XP. It is good for beginners, but the ATC-XP is much better.

Great shoe

Five Ten Moccasym Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2006

This was my first shoe ever, and since I have very wide feet, it was a very good choice. A very big factor in how well the shoe will break in is how much of the shoe is leather, because the rubber will not stretch. Having wide feet, this shoe formed really well to my foot and made climbing more about the wall rather than the pain of my feet.

Great fitting shoe

La Sportiva Cliff Rock Climbing Shoe

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2006

I have used these shoes and have found that the laces really help fit the shoe better. The shape of the toe makes getting small holds a little harder, but all in all it is a great beginner shoe.

Great for all climbers

Black Diamond ATC-XP

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2006

This is such a great improvement from the original ATC. The teeth and the v-shaped rim really help take pressure from your arms, hands, and minds. It's great for rappelling and belaying, and it is very light and simple, and also inexpensive.

Two purposes

Black Diamond Cinch Rope Bag

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2006

Not only does this bag work as a haul bag, but as a buffer for your rope from dirt and water.

A tricky decent

Petzl Grigri Belay Device

Rating for this product: 5 April 5, 2006

I very much like the Grigri, and it is great to give to new belayers. The only thing about it that is tricky is the lever that decreases tension on the rope to let it slide, which lets you or the climber down, it's hard to get used to it and descending is bumpy and jerky, but overall it's a great safe belay device.

Gets really warm

Black Diamond Super 8 Belay/Rappel Device

Rating for this product: 3 April 5, 2006

From my experience, the Super 8 is a good backup like was stated, but it tends to get really hot in long rappels and even on belaying. A trick is to lead the rope through the carabineer to reduce friction. Overall it is pretty heavy to haul, and in my opinion, buying a second Black Diamond ATC-XP would be a better idea.
