Electric EG1 Chrome Goggle - Chrome    Read other reviews of this product

a full season of fun   07-11-05

I used these goggles all last season (incidentally, Utah’s longest season on record). I bought them for the Orange Chrome lens to use on super bright days and I love them. They also came with a free rose/bright pink lens which has been truly awesome on those flat light days. It was a little hard to swap lenses at first, but the more I did it, the easier it became. The chrome/mirror coating has a couple minor scratches in it now but I think it has held up really well considering the season of abuse. (It also fits perfect with Leedom helmets unlike another brand I had to return due to some beater forehead gap.)

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag    This product is no longer available

Best Bag Ever   07-15-05

I think these bags could survive warfare! I've had mine for more years than I can remember, though I think it's somewhere around 5 or 6, if that gives you an idea for the durability and it really doesn't show ANY signs of falling apart. The first one I bought was the small, which I use almost every day, and then I got a larger one a couple years ago to transport my laptop and use for various larger needs. You could drop this thing in a puddle close to its height and as long as water didn't get in through the top everything would stay dry. Conversely, if you spilled your whole Nalgene bottle's worth of water inside, you could tip back your bag and drink it right out (not that you'd want to, but it makes it a lot easier to clean when you can dump things out instead of them getting soaked into the fabric). If I could give this more than 5 stars I would!

Just WOW.   09-28-07

WOW. Not sure how you could not love this beacon. It will still take some practice, like any other beacon to nail down the multiple burials, but it's so cool that it can display the number of signals in a given distance, and the upgradeable software is prime. I bought mine last year before a couple upgrades came out and had the software updated, no problem. The included CD that explains how the DSP works more accurately , especially as you get into your pin point search is great too. The only thing i miss from my last ortovox M2 beacon was that the ortovox automatically turned on anytime you strapped it on which was a really nice feature, but as long as you and your buddies are in the habit of checking each other's beacons (and you should be every time you go out) then it shouldn't be an issue. Also, i think the ortovox M2 was easier access being worn closer to the waist where you could easily reach up and under your jacket without having to unzip your jacket to get your beacon and put it in search mode, but again, just practice with the DSP, i think the other features of the DSP far outweigh those two criticisms.

DAKINE Reload Pack - 2900cu in    Read other reviews of this product

rant rant rant   09-24-07

It may have more space, but it's not as useful or user friendly as the Sequence. One of the dumbest things is that the straps do not have a shoulder adjustment (and this pack is meant to carry MORE than the sequence, and the sequence has shoulder adjustment) and they are attached to the back panel, not the main bag, so if your zipper were to fail (like every sequence zipper on any pack that actually gets used), the entire pack could just fall away from your back and yard sale all of your expensive gear all over the snow/dirt/pavement. This pack is not as good for skiers or boarders as they still don't have a good shovel/probe carry system or enough space for extra layers and food for any backcountry use. And let's be honest, if you are a ski photographer, you are going to be spending a lot of time in the backcountry looking for those untracked lines. The internal dividers kind of suck, too, as they seem to be sized wrong (with nothing in the pack, the middle two dividers, the ones that the lens attached to your camera body would be holding in, are right next to each other, so when you put a camera in there with it's lens, those dividers are just going to bow outward). Dakine should go talk to those Wheels & Wax kids and get their ish figured out.

2 out of 3 ain't bad   12-07-06

It's cool to get all three lenses at once, but I don't personally like the sensor mirror. It makes everyhing super super bright (which sounds great, I know) but it does not add any more definition to the terrain. I think my brain was even more confused at not being able to see differences in the terrain in flat light since it appeared to be so incredibly bright. I've found I much prefer the old classic RC36 for flat light days, and the platinum mirror is a great all around lens being that the mirror helps reflect a lot of the sun, and the rose color helps you out when you suddenly go from bright light to shade. I still wish they would make an orange lens with a mirrored coating for bluebird days, but I guess you can't have everything. (And as a disclaimer, I know some people LOVE the sensor mirror, so I could just be that one freak that doesn't, but you've been warned)

It just feels right.   12-07-06

This is my new favorite base layer for everyday. It's simple, it doesn't smell bad after wearing it for a week, and it's really comfortable. It seems to stretch out just a little bit after wearing it a day or two, but nothing bad, if anything, just more comfort. I use this mostly for skiing, but have also used it to sleep in for some fall camping in the desert. I've found that even sleeping in merino vs anything synthetic is SO nice. In comparison, synthetics just feel like plastic to me now. Icebreaker rules, it just feels right.

Marmot Mountain Down Jacket - Women's    Read other reviews of this product

Great jacket, too bad they didn't bother to make my size   12-07-06

I fell in love with this jacket, but it just proved to be too fitted for my purposes (cold weather skiing) in the size L. I don't know why they can't just make an XL in this jacket like they do in the Ama Dablam or the Guide Down. I had to exchange it for the Patagonia Down Patrol. Aside from not making it in a better size, I WAS stoked on this particular down jacket because of the really high, and really soft/comfortable collar to protect the face on those really really cold days. Also, the arms have incredible range of motion (I think they call it the butterfly or something), and the elbows and shoulders have extra beefy fabric to protect against ski edges and branches and what not. I was kind of broken-hearted at the prospect of returning it.

A little big, but totally awesome   12-07-06

We had a couple ski days where it was -7F, and I got some temporary frostbite on my cheek. Not real fun. So I decided to throw down for this waterproof down jacket and haven't had any problems since. The collar comes up nice and high to protect your face from the cold and wind, and the hood is helmet compatible which will be great for those pow mornings when I'm standing in line for forever before the lift opens. The fit is pretty roomy, which gives a good range of motion for skiing. I would usually wear an XL in most brands, but I got a large and it's still roomy enough to fit a hoodie underneath when I'm wearing it around town (so other people might want to consider sizing down from their usual sizes). Anyway, I LOVE this jacket and I'm 100% happy with the purchase, it's really comfortable and totally worth it!

new fav   02-17-06

I really just bought this hoody because it looked cool, but it's got more than one secret pocket! HoLLaH (Aside from the one by the shoulder, there is another little zipper pocket above the left kangaroo pocket so you could stash your cash in one and your key in the other, it's perfect) and the thumbholes rock too. Super comfy material as well, not too thick, not too thin, though trying to wear it while it's still winter, I can tell it's part of their spring line. But I love it all the same.

Time tested   07-18-05

Growing up on the East Coast, I have used the Capilene mid-weight zip tee for skiing for as long as I can remember (it may go back as much as 10 years!). It is soft and comfortable and I love having that zipper for ventilation. I don't use it quite as much in the milder temps of Utah, but it still remains a much used piece of winter clothing.

CamelBak Omega Reservoir    Read other reviews of this product

tough enough for endos   07-14-05

I bought the Omega Reservoir when the bladder in my generic bike hydration pack broke. I wouldn't dream of buying anything other than camelback. My Omega is still going strong (and clean) after about 3 years of use from biking to hiking to easy water access on long road trips (just hang it off the back of the seat.) The wide mouth is great for getting ice into the pack and makes cleaning much easier. The seal on the bladder is also super good, you can feel it when you close it. I once had trouble getting it open it was sealed so good (but that is probably more my fault for letting it sit for a few months w/o use in the winter). I've also endo-ed straight over the handlebars and on to my back while biking, and the camelback did not break. In fact it probably helped alot to cushion my fall. I can't imagine life without the camelback.

The North Face Friction Belt    Read other reviews of this product

thumbs down for the buckle   12-10-06

I love that this is a wide cloth belt, since most cloth belts are skinny and don't fill up normal belt loops. The downfall is the belt buckle. It does not stay tight. Even if you aren't wearing the belt to keep your pants up, it loosens up and gets kind of annoying. If they would use a different buckle in the future it would rock.

Wow, this is my new favorite sweater! I love the versatility of the buttons and how they are attached through a thick ribbon. I was a little skeptical of the fur in the hood, but it's so soft, and I've found myself using it to keep warm, and for general dome comfort. The front pockets are great, too. I also love the thickness of the sweater, it's perfect for winter.

DAKINE Sequence Backpack - 1800 cu in    Read other reviews of this product

Some good some bad   10-02-06

The new sequence has some improvements on the old one, and a couple short-comings. There is no longer a small inner mesh pocket in the top pocket, which was perfect for keeping track of small random things, such as keys. One thing they made better is the water bottle pocket which used to take a lot of wrestling with to fit a nalgene bottle into....now it's a pocket that unzips to turn into a water bottle pocket. it is sized better for a nalgene bottle and when not in use you have an extra zippered pocket. Overall the pack is still great for hauling camera gear while skiing, and it skis really well (i.e. it does not feel cumbersome or hinderng). On longer hikes it's not the most comfortable pack to hike with when it's fully loaded and your diagonally loaded skis are pulling back at your left shoulder, but for shorter hikes it's just fine.

Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms - Women's    This product is no longer available

long lasting   07-21-05

I've been using these bottoms forever! I am talking years, like ten years. Super comfortable, and since mine are a little long on me (I guess I am short for my waist size) I just roll over the waist a couple times and have an instant comfort soft waist band (not a fan of the straight up elastic band, but the problem seems to have solved itself). The one thing I am bummed about is they do kind of stink now that I ski 75 to 100 days a year, but with lighter use they were fine.

Didn't think I would really love this T as much as I do. There must be something about the organic cotton, it stretches just enough, but not too much, and is really one of the most comfortable T's I own. And it's really funny to see people's reactions when your hair is covering the "Gear" side of the text and they have to do a double take of your "Slut" shirt and then guys realize it says "GEAR slut" and they are suddenly in love. How -YOU- doin?

add one straw, and shake violently   09-13-07

i will be honest, i bought this bottle to use at work and have not really put it "through the ringer" outside at this point. BUT, you need to stay hydrated if you play outside on a regular basis and having a straw for some reason helps me to drink a lot more water during the day than if i just have a wide mouth Nalgene and have to unscrew it all the time, dump water down my shirt, or let dust and whatever other randomness flies through the air fall in there if i leave it open. I have at least tested the leak-proof-ness by turning upside down and shaking violently. seriously, it was violent. And mine passed that test.

DAKINE Drafter Bike Pack w/70 oz Quick Disconnect - Women's    Read other reviews of this product

Perfect for all my rides   07-01-07

I needed a pack to carry a few more items than my shuttle pack would allow so i picked up the Drafter. The main pocket is big enough that i can put my collapsible Platypus "platy bottle" in their for those long rides when you're gonna need extra water and it also has inside organization pockets for tools, hand pump, energy bars, keys, etc. The hydration bladder made by Nalgene is my favorite bladder yet, i will use this bladder for hiking in larger packs too. It's way easier to open than the camel back bladders (i once had to use pliers cause my old camel back one was so stuck on there!) and the detachable tube is a really nice touch for refilling. The lock mechanism on the bite valve is nice and easy to use too. Flip it straight to lock, turn it 90 degrees to open. I also like the helmet pouch, it's nice to have place for the helmet vs rattling around in the back of the car, and i guess there are some people who would take it off for climbing (not me, but whatever) so it would be nice for that. I put my arm guards in the helmet pouch last night for the climbing part of our ride and was able to easily pull them out the top without removing the pack from my back. I think shin guards would be too big to hold in there however and would end up hitting the back of your head if they even stayed in. I haven't used my shuttle pack since i got the drafter. It's been perfect for all my rides (usually a bunch of climbing with a nice downhill payoff is my style) but sometimes get suckered into longer cross country rides and will most likely use it for some lift served as well. Oh yeah, and it looks way cooler than any camelback style!

Icebreaker Skin200 Legless Pant - Women's    Read other reviews of this product

Wool is where it's at, and the 3/4 length is perfect,   07-13-06

I was skeptical of the 3/4 pant at first, just because i've ALWAYS had full length long johns, and i don't think i want to go back now. The question of pant legs in the boots or trying to roll them up and leave them out of the boots is just a non-issue. I used these for the end of winter and all of spring skiing, and they were perfect! I was also skeptical of the waistband because it looks like one of those super tight elastic bands that's only good for creating a good looking sausage, but it's not so, they made it just right. Also (if you need the testimonial) they do not smell bad. I have always used capilene and its stinks so terribly after one use. I ski alot....and i can't afford to buy enough long johns for every day, so having ones i can wear more than once with out washing and without stinking is awesome! Also, of note, Icebreaker claims these are lightweight and not midweight, and I would tend to agree with that, however I have never found myself to be cold in them yet.

Yakima Little Joe 3 Bike Capacity    Read other reviews of this product

the little bike rack that could   09-12-07

I already have two king cobras on my roof but wanted to be able to shuttle more bikes when needed. I bought this before a weekend trip that was nothing but shuttle rides and i am SO STOKED on this little guy. I would dare to say i like it better than the super joe my friend has. Since there are no "bumpers" to set your bike in, you have a lot more options of how to rack newer frame styles that often have small triangles between the top tube and the down tube. For my bike, this means i don't have to hang my bike where it will be sitting on any of my cables because i can fit the rack through that triangle. I also think that being able to nest the bikes closer together makes the whole thing really stable. I have actually been REALLY impressed with how stable it is.I generally take the extra strap lengths (from where the rack attaches to the car) and tie those to the frame of the bike to keep them on the rack nice and tight, but buying some cheap bungee cords is not a bad idea either. As long as you have the bikes tied on tight though, they don't sway an inch while driving. Bottom line, it's not about girth. Best little bike rack (especially for the money) and actually preferred over the beefier looking racks.

Thicker than expected, but nice and warm   12-07-06

I would not put these in the category of lightweight as the website states. They seem at least midweight and not as thin as other Lorpen socks that I have been using. That being said, we've had some really really cold days recently. So even though these socks are a little thicker than I usually like for skiing in, I used them for a recent tour and my toes stayed nice and warm all day.

wicks great, smells a little, but still in love   10-02-06

I wear this top for biking ALL the time, if it's clean, it's the first one I will grab. If it's not clean, I might still wear, though I caution you not to wear it too many days in a row (i.e. a weekend in Moab) since it's not wool, the smell gets a little ripe after a while. But if you wear it and wash it, then not to worry. Aside from that, I love the look/style and the white-ish back panel is an even lighter, softer, airier fabric than the colored portion of the top and it breathes and wicks moisture fantastically. It is especially perfect when you have a camel back on causing you to sweat a little extra back there. Last note...the size runs slightly big. I stayed with the size I usually wear cause I don't mind the roomy comfort, but I probably could have gone down a size for a more fitted look without it being too small for me.

I dig 'em   07-25-05

These are officially my new mountain biking sunglasses. Nice and light. They fit my head and face perfectly (I guess I have a medium sized head -large for a girl, but small for a dude.) The rubber on my last pair of sunglasses would ALWAYS get stuck in my hair when I took them off, and these have been much better at not getting stuck. The scoop thing seems to work too. Sure, I will fog up a bit when I stop but as soon as I start moving they are fog free. I went for the bronze/taupe combo and really like the lighter lenses for riding in the shade of the woods. I also dig the slightly more "urban" style of the frames.

i guess it's cool that Dakine sells the camera block separately, but they should really add a pocket or two for holding things like extra batteries and memory cards. Nothing too fancy, but just some pockets on the inside of the zipper flap/panel (like the back panel in the sequence) would be great. It has a shoulder strap so you can use it by itself, but without being able to hold essential peripherals, having the use of the shoulder strap is pretty bogus. as far as size, it's made to hold a professional SLR or DSLR with one lens attached and 1 to 3 more lenses (or 1 - 2 plus flash and light meter) depending on the size of those lenses).

tastes great, less filling (actually, less $$ from the wallet!)   07-01-07

I bought this for a recent backpacking trip to avoid taking my over-sized car camping pad. I was originally looking to get the Thermarest Pro Lite because I know a lot of people who love theirs, but I really couldn't justify the price of the prolite. I came across this POE pad and liked the sound of it, and the price! I have only used it a couple nights but i couldn't be happier. I even fell asleep on it at home by accident the first night i had inflated it before i was going to pack it the next day. The baffles on the side that are suppose to keep the heat in also help to keep you in the middle of the pad (and i usually have issues sliding off the sides of my pads -hence my oversized car camping pad- and even when i was a little 12 year old i would fall off, but i don't fall off the sides of the All Out Lite. i haven't used it enough to report on durability over time or inflated it enough to speak to it's self inflation but will report back when i have. But so far, i can't see why anyone wouldn't want this pad for backpacking!

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it.   07-01-07

I have the first model of the SyncroFLOAT and have loved them from day one. The SyncroFLOAT 2 however has not been as great for me. They do not feel as comfortable from the get-go, and they are not as comfortable while jogging as the original SynchroFLOAT, not to mention my pinky toes got "pins and needles". I'm continuing to use them for now to see if they just need more breaking in than my other SyncroFLAOT, and i'm trying to experiment with different lacing, but the laces are really short and doing something as simple and common as the runners loop leaves very little lace left to actually tie your shoes (and you can certainly forget about any kind of double knot).

For the most part I've converted all of my base layers to wool, but this polypro one I still wear. I actually wore it for a couple weeks off and on without washing on a ski trip to Argentina this summer, and I expected it to stink like no other. But I guess Helly Hansen's antimicrobial stuff actually works. (And I had already worn the top for a ski season, so it wasn't exactly new and had already been washed a ton.) Sizing is on the loose side but not loose enough to really want to size down at all.

I usually wear just the shell and a base layer (I ski in Utah where it's usually not super frigid) and the minimal insulation is perfect, but it's really easy to layer when the temps drop. My only complaint is the inside of the neck could be softer, and the neck could be a little larger and higher so that you have more to hide your face in and protect your face in during those storm skiing days. So i've taken to wearing a scarf when it's nuking outside, but otherwise this jacket is awesome.

Jetboil 1 Liter Companion Cup     Read other reviews of this product

Exactly!   10-02-06

I decided to get the Companion Cup for the same reason mentioned above. And it's true, it's perfect for making coffee in the first and oatmeal in the second. Or coffee/tea/etc for two people since you can use the same base/gas on either cup.

Patagonia Pull-On Mesh Sport Top - Women's    This product is no longer available

No more thick uncomfortable elastic band   07-25-05

I haven't tried jogging with this bra yet, but have been using it a ton for hiking and mountain biking and to that end it rules. The mesh is great in the summer heat and I love the seamless band that goes around, SO MUCH BETTER than the standard thick elastic band of most sports bra, this one is SUPER comfortable and wicks moisture away perfectly.

Needs altering for girls   07-28-05

Great little pack. Although the strap system is not very girl-friendly (and by girl friendly I mean compatibility with the upper sports bra region) on account of the chest strap. It would be fine if one could move the chest strap higher up on the shoulder straps, so they attach higher across the chest, but they don't go high enough on account of the gear loops. I will probably try to remove some stitching so the straps can slide higher and hopefully the whole things fits better. (Right now I can't put the shoulder straps where they should be cause the chest strap would be all weird). Otherwise, it's a great little pack and I’m sure dudes have no issues with the chest strap. It's perfect for in bounds use and perfect for short OB hikes from the resort. I have also used it hiking in the spring/summer and it works especially well here for post-season ski-recovery. The diagonal ski carry is great, too. Quick and easy.

Nixon Tribella Watch - Women's    Read other reviews of this product

this is normal "girl" sized, don't get stuck   09-24-07

My wrists are on the big size (as far as most women's watches are concerned, still small compared to men's watch sizes) and this watch almost got stuck on my wrist. So i have to disagree with the previous review about these running big. I've tried on plenty of Nixon women's watches and all the metal or fixed size bands are too small, so I would say this one is just the same as the rest of their women's sizing.

Haha, I love this beanie, everyone needs a little fraggle rock in their life. Ummm, and it stretches to fit the head quite-a-nice. Wish they had more colors though.
