Vestibule adds room but also weight and hassle
Black Diamond Firstlight Tent Vestibule
September 25, 2005
I got this for two person trips with my dog for the extra room. It is pretty light but still 1/3 the weight of the whole tent, pretty expensive, and pretty complicated. It made my tent setup time about double what it was alone. I also found that the vestibule pole tends to come undone from the grommets on the tent. I'm not sure if it will really keep all the water out of the tent either because of the gaps between vestibule and tent wall on top. That said, it did what I wanted it too, wasn't really heavy, and made my night much more enjoyable. However I wouldn't bring it on a trip unless it was a two person/dog trip and I expected significant rainfall because it's too much hassle.

Shorts are great
GoLite Hike Shorts - Men's
September 29, 2004
These have become my favorite shorts. Nice material, light weight, small velcro pocket, very nice. For me they are the right length too- not too short and not too long. Good range of movement. The stretchy patch below the waistline on the back synchs up nicely with a pack too. They dry quickly and don't hold a smell either. I'd recommend them.

Tent is all I expected
Black Diamond Firstlight Tent 2-Person 3-Season
August 28, 2004
I gave this a five even though I'd suggest a couple of improvements because it is simply the lightest and nicest 2 person real tent available. There's other "shelters" that are slightly lighter but they have pretty big tradeoffs. For a real tent this is the best. It is easy to set up although I stil get a bit nervous about the possibility of putting the poles through the tent. Hasn't been a problem so no big deal. It rolls up easily and always fits in the stuff sack with little problem unlike some other tents. I wish it were 6" to a foot longer. I'd be OK with the extra weight. The velcro closures for the tent poles are kind of a pain. The color is good and lets in cheery light so you don't get claustrophobic. Tent internal height is really good. With two people there is little room for gear. Overall a great tent.

Nicest bag in its class
Marmot Hydrogen Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down
August 28, 2004
It's a bit more $ than some other bags in its class but it is so light, lofts so well, packs so nicely, and is really comfortable in camp. I really liked the material on the inside for feel and comfort. I can't believe how light it is for how warm it is. I think it's the lightest/best made bag for the features. There are some bags that go off a few ounces lighter but you sacrifice having a zipper, hood, or length. This is simply the best and lightest/smallest packed size bag without sacrificing one feature or another.

Awesome
GoLite Infinity Pack - 2550 cu in
August 28, 2004
This is the best pack I own. The only thing I wish it had is a little pocket on the waist belt for small items like bug juice or sunscreen. Carries really well even though it is ultra light. I have the large and I did a 3 day solo trip with tent, bag, pad, 3 liter water bladder, pad camp chair kit, stove, cookset, extra clothes, food, water filter, book, miscellaneous like headlamp, sunscreen, etc and it all fit inside and the whole package weighed 24.5 lbs with full water! Granted I have light/small stuff but I could have carried enough food for 7 days along with what I brought and it would have been fine. Not too big, not too small, really light, good quality construction. Very nice.
