Tough and useful

MSR Fuel Bottles

Rating for this product: 5 September 12, 2008

These bottles will last until you loose them- there's no way of breaking them. Also cheaper than other brands. The cap has a big loop for clipping it to your backpack and also two small holes inside to handle the fuel without spilling. In Aconcagu the porters use mules to get your stuff to BC, this is your best option, no leaks at all. Hope this helps.

Allergic to airplanes

MSR WhisperLite International Multi-Fuel Stove

Rating for this product: 5 September 12, 2008

Great stove, though to simmer but with time you'll get it, just don't over pump it. You can pretty much burn anything with this stove, which is great when you are far away or just lazy about finding a camping store to get canisters. Be ultra careful if using it inside your tent, this thing is a torch and you are playing with liquid fuel. Have in mind this stove is a no-no for TSA agents, you must clean them really good before getting on a plane, and sometimes even if it is clean they'll just take it. Also some crazy lady from Aloha Airlines may think you are some kind of a terrorist(it happened).

Answer to: "is the 14 led duo head lamp available i think the modle number..."

Petzl DUO LED 5 Headlamp

August 7, 2008

They do now! http://www.backcountry.com/store/PTZ0186/Petzl-Duobelt-LED-14-Headlamp.html
------------------------------------------------------------------
More diodes doesn't necessarily equate to more lumens (brightness), and the definitely equal greater power draw. I'd seriously recommend the LED 5 if you think it'll meet your needs.

Backcountry doesn't stock the Duo LED 14 lamp right now, but all of these guys should be able to help you.

MSR Fuel Bottles

August 2, 2008

I did just that, hiked with my whisperlite fuel pump in the canister, held exactly as you said in an external side pocket on my pack for 26 days and had no problem. No breakage. Is that recommended? Not sure. With my experience, all worked fine. Happy trails.

Windproof Bunker

The North Face Spectrum 23 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 July 31, 2008

I've been using this tent for a year now, mountaineering in the Andes, close to Aconcagua(will be right there next summer). It's totally amazing, no stabilizing strings at all, and it's seriously unbelievable stable, I've spent some nights where I was scared to stay out because of the wind, IT WAS RAGING out there, the tent didn't even feel the stress. Condensation might be a problem in humid places though, it's very dry here and I still get some condensation in the morning. In my opinion perfect for high altitude expeditions, I've used it over the snow many times without any problems. It's also really light, you can use this solo without excessive overweight. Only one complain: no pockets, just one next to your feet, which is not really useful.

Answer to: "what's the lumen output on max setting?(will it work for a night-time..."

Petzl MYO XP Belt Headlamp

July 20, 2008

150 lumens when using the boost mode.
Will sustain that brightness for nearly 20 seconds.
85 lumens on high setting.

Also really lightweight, diffuser is ultra simple yet totally effective.

Easy to use buttons, even while using gloves.

You won't find a better light than this one for what you want to use it for.

Your friends headlights will look like their batteries are all running low compared to yours :)

Garmin eTrex Vista

April 30, 2008

It's one of the most basic features. More advanced ones give distances between points following a certain road instead of in straight line. I'm not confident about the traffic ones, but normal handhelds do have this function for sure.
Hope this helps.

Answer to: "does anyone know if the Right hand and left hand will zip together..."

Mountain Hardwear Lyell SL -15 Sleeping Bag: -15 Degree Down

March 10, 2008

They will zip together as the zippers are the same size... but you will have a hood on the bottom and a hood on top. If that is okay... then no problem.

The hoods would be switched only if you are doing right and right or left and left. If you get a right and left they will line right up. Also you can use different sleeping bags that share the same zipper. My Marmot bags line up with my MH bags. Different MH bags will line up as well. I used a Lyell with a Piute and they worked great together.

Answer to: "do these work at altitude?"

MSR Reactor Stove

March 6, 2008

YES!!! MSR designed it to shine above 12,000 feet. It doesn't require much pressure to operate well, so it also works well in cold weather. check out http://www.msrgear.com/stoves/reactor.asp and click on the link on the right side that says, "more on the reactor stove's revolutionary technology"

Tweak: This is NOT A MOUNTAINEERING STOVE. If by altitude you mean high or very high altitude(from 12,000 feet up) or are planning to use it in severe cold conditions(-20F and below) I'd rather stick to a liquid fuel stove, fuel itself behaves a lot better on such conditions than isobutane canisters, no pressure or temperature problems. Personally I use an MSR Whisperlite, simple, tough and HOT.
You can find some examples on the review "NO GO IN SNOW!!" down below.
