I've been bashing in some of the most unforgiving places this planet has to offer for over ten years. I've got some kit most people will never see, and have had blisters in places I didn't know I had.
I know what works for me, and know a thing or two about getting to the other side of the swamp/mountain/forest/snow-drift, I'm happy to help when I can.

The North Face Cirque Delta Fleece Pullover - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

Why North Face got rid of this jacket is beyond me. I've worn this with an Ice Breaker base layer (200 Weight), and a (I hate to say this) cotton tee in 5 - 15 C and with strong winds and light rain and was warm as toast. The little pocket at the front is all but useless, unless you want to keep your Driver's License safe. Everything about this jacket was good in my books, and it's light weight made it easy to pack when space was/is an issue. Hope they make something very much like it in the future.

Not bad

KEEN Voyageur Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

Lighter and more breathable than the TARGEE II Mid-Hiking, or so I've found. Not great for anything serious, seeing as there is no ankle support. But a good, light shoe for walking and light travel.

Icebreaker Bike/Run Lite Mini Sock - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 August 25, 2008

Icebreaker make the best wool based product in the world. I have never had warm feet until now. Wet, dry, hot, cold, these sock can handle everything. If you don't have anything by Icebreaker yet you should run out and get some. Just top shelf.

Great, but hot

SmartWool Adrenaline Mid Crew Hiking Sock

Rating for this product: 4 August 25, 2008

If your feet overheat like mine, they can get VERY uncomfortable in warmer weather. As soon as it cools off mind you they can't be beaten.

Best Boots I've seen.

KEEN Targhee ll Mid Hiking Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 July 11, 2008

I've had these boots for just under a year and they have been over the Canadian Shield, through the black peet mud of North Carolina (I mean COVERED!) and now they'll be off to Central Asia. I wouldn't put another pair of boots on my feet (unless they where also KEEN). Best boots on the market for light-pack day hiking.

Answer to: "My husband has a short, but wide foot. We are hiking in Denali..."

Vasque Breeze Low Day Hiking Shoe - Men's

June 29, 2008

I have an 11 EEE - F foot and have been hiking in KEEN TARGHEE II Mid-Hiking boot for almost a year now. I've had no problem getting my flippers into them and even after they get soaked inside and out they kept their shape.
There was little to no break-in time, so your husband should be able to get them on and go.
All in all KEEN make some of the best footwear for the man with a more robust foot.
The only down side is they do look a bit like Clown shoes when you get them on. I got over that quickly and have taken these boots everywhere.
I think if they can do Northern Canada in Spring, and North Carolina in Summer they should be good for what you need.
Hope that helps.
