Shifty Sweet

Backcountry.com Shift Composite Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2008

I had the chance to wear this coat in the resort on a few weather variable days, including a little rain. I'm typically a hard shell guy, but loved the ease at which I could move in the composite. The coat shed outside moisture and also breathed like a champ. I didn't have to touch any extra layers all day. The coat is an athletic fit, which I like. I'm 5' 10.5", and the medium fits perfect.

Breathe of Relief...

Black Diamond Covert with Avalung Winter Pack - 1343-1953 cu in

Rating for this product: 5 February 26, 2008

Hope I never have to use it, but definitely happy to have the extra lifesaver with the avalung. Having it integrated into the pack is really awesome and doesn't impact use of the pack in any way. Love the separate pockets for probe/shovel and gear. Would love to have aa pocket or two on the waist belt for easy food access, but jacket works as well. I have the 32L and big enough for food, water bladder, and extra layers, without being too bulky.

Hard to beat...

Patagonia Down Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

This is one of my favorite jackets...Light, warm, and a good looker (have last year's in burnt orange). Love that it compresses into it's own pouch as well. Works great as an outerlayer and if you need a shell, works great and doesn't feel bulky underneath. I'm 5' 10" and thin, the medium fits lwell (as does most Patagonia mediums). I also like that the collar is relatively snug , but not too tight around the neck to keep out the cold and falling snow when fully zipped

Athletic Fleece

Norrøna Narvik Fleece Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

If you're looking for an athletic cut fleece that can be worn both as an outer layer, this is a great pick. I've worn this fleece as an outer layer on several hikes and snowshoes...definitely no bulk, but plenty of warmth and a functional hood. I tend not to wear hoodies as under layers, so I've not tried it there. I also like the euro color (got it in green)...have enough black, grey, and dulls in the lineup, so was happy to see something different. Have definitely become a Noronna fan and now own a few pieces. Top quality and attention to detail.

Ear tweak...

Arc'teryx Covert Beanie w/ Pocket

Rating for this product: 3 February 25, 2008

I've got a small bean and short hair (i.e. shaved)...agree with the others that this hat is a little shy on ear coverage. I do like the pocket to carry my key on a run. Great idea, but needs a small tweak.

Thin to win..

Arc'teryx Delta AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

Was looking for a thin layer to wear underneath a shell and this was perfect. I hate extra bulk on cold days...This keeps me warm and when the sun is out, and whem I'm skinning up, works as a perfect outer layer to she some heat. Agree with others, the fleece on this jacket feels great on the outside and in.

Toasted...

Arc'teryx Fission AR Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 February 25, 2008

Not much else to say here other than what has been written already. I'd make a request for a slim inside pocket and velcro cuffs, but love everythign else. Use this jacket on cold and windy days on the mountain and have never gotten cold, even on sub zero. Primaloft is primo in my book

Converted...

Arc'teryx Covert Hoody Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

Love this fleece...Soft and a bit pricey, but as usual with Arcteryx, you get what you pay for. I use it more for a casual piece than an active piece as I don't like hoodies as under layers...I have worn it for some cold weather hikes and runs...No bulk on this jacket.

Warm under...

Patagonia R2 Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

Definitely not the fleece to wear as an outer layer on a windy day, but toasty warm under a shell and keeps you war on a fall/spring day. As always, love the Patagonia fit. Something about the fuzzy outside makes me feel a little warmer. I also like the offset zipper...The beard always seems to grab on my other fleeces and jackets, but never on this one. They also went the extra lenght and sewed in an R1 fleece into the cuffs to keep em snug.

Who doesn't like kangaroo pockets...

Patagonia Synchilla Marsupial Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

As typical, great piece of gear from the folks at Patagonia. More of a casual layer than a base layer for me as I like my underlayers to be a snug athletic fit. I love the center pocket and it's warm as an evening fire.

No clodhoppers here...

MSR Lightning Ascent

Rating for this product: 5 February 25, 2008

These were my purchase of choice after trying out several pairs...sweet. Light as a feather, grip like a bear paw, and not wide as a pontoon boat (I really hate stompin on my own feet). Not to mention they float pretty well in the deep stuff and climb. If you're lookin for a pair of shoes for the long haul, worth the extra investment.

The North Face Freedom Insulated Pant - Women's

Rating for this product: 4 January 5, 2008

Thanks, Northface, for the roomy and modern cut of these insulated ski pants. I wore these in Park City during some sub zero weather and NEVER froze my butt off. If you want a lower waisted fit, these are not for you, as these are more traditionally cut in the waist.

Great bang for your buck!

The North Face Banshee Triclimate Ski Jacket - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2008

I love that you get two jackets in one! Great zip space (not too many, which I prefer). The jacket is roomy in the pits but still cut for a lady. I really love the color combo. Plus, the zip out jacket is PERFECT for a warm day on the slopes, or for spring time.

Cozy and Chic

The North Face Metropolis Parka - Women's

Rating for this product: 5 January 5, 2008

I love this jacket because of its warmth and style -- finally, a longer downfilled jacket that doesn't make a chic look like grizzly bear! This is the perfect coat for walking my dogs in the windy city of Chicago! Plus, it's stylish look allows me to wear it almost anywhere.

Shelled....At how sweet this coat is....

Norrøna Lofoten Gore-Tex Pro Shell Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 3, 2008

Have owned Patagonia Primo and Arcteryx shells in the past and love this one more than both of the previous. The shell is extremely light and the Gore Pro breathes like no other. I'm 5'10", 160 lbs and the medium is a perfect athletic fit. If you don't like floppy hoods, the one piece hood/collar combo snugs up to the back of your neck when hot in use, but still fits well over a helmet when you need it. I also got the Norrona pants and the shell either buttons to or zips in for a bombproof combo.

Rock and Run

Salomon XA Pro 3D XCR Trail Running Shoe - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 December 4, 2007

I've had these shoes for over 4 weeks now and love them. After trail running on just regular road trainers, the XCR's are a great improvement. They're still light, yet have have sweet grip and don't even have to think about slipping on the trail. Just for giggles I even ran through a few ice cold streams to see if they were waterproof and came out dry. I'm also digging the pull lace up mechanism. I've also like a little wider toe box and was happy that I didn't feel like my toes we're being crammed.
