Tiny!

Bern Brentwood w/ Visor Knit Helmet

Rating for this product: 2 October 5, 2008

I usually wear a size small hat, and I had heard that Bern helmets run small, so I ordered a medium and the helmet just barely fit onto my head. I had to return it for a large. Also, the "removable winter knit liner" is actually a super thin piece of fabric with knit ear pieces and a visor. It is for use only when snapped into the helmet. I expected better quality. CS was great about the exchange though.

Sick

Dragon DX Goggles w/ Ionized Lens

Rating for this product: 5 October 5, 2008

Got Jet/Ionized and they are as advertised. Comfortable fleece lining, killer looks and good quality. The lens is easy to pop in and out so you can switch lenses on the go. The mirroring does make it impossible to see your eyes. They fit well with my Baker helmet. A great buy.

Answer to: "are there slits in the goggles where the glass eye pieces can..."

Oakley Proven Over The Glass Goggles

October 4, 2008

The foam padding is designed to mold around your glasses. So you just put on your glasses, then put on the goggles. No slits needed.

Electric EG1 Lens

October 3, 2008

The Clear/Silver Chrome might be, but if you can find some just plain clear lenses it would be ideal.

Oakley Half Jacket XLJ Sunglasses

October 2, 2008

The various lenses are explained in the sizing chart. Of the ones currently in stock, the Black Iridium lens is the darkest at 10% VLT. The Gold Iridium is next at 12%, and the other two are both in the 25-30 range.
*****
If you want even lower transmission than that, buy yourself a set of replacement lenses in Ice, Black, or Gold Iridium Polarized. Those three have transmission rates of 9%.

Answer to: "Can I get these sunglasses with a hard case . . . instead of..."

Maui Jim Sunset Sunglasses - Polarized

September 30, 2008

No. Soft cases are generally just soft bags for storage that double as lens cleaners so if you want a hard case, you'll need to buy it. I've never needed a hard case though; a little bit of care and a soft case is usually sufficient.

Mountainsmith Needle Backpack - 2075-2136cu in

September 30, 2008

You might need to check it. My 1500 cube atmos 25 barely fits under a seat. If you've got that loaded to the brim, it probably won't fit. Measure the pack, then look online at what the space is on the plane.

Answer to: "is there a sternum strap?"

Burton Day Hiker Pack - Women's - 20L

September 30, 2008

It really looks like it. You can see a small band across the shoulder straps around where a sternum strap would attach (look at the pop camo picture).

Not a question, but just wanted to add to my review of the Elixir....

The North Face Apex Elixir Vest - Men's

September 28, 2008

Not a question, but just wanted to add to my review of the Elixir. I used it as a baselayer under my softshell while hiking Mount Katahdin in the rain and it worked really well both under the jacket and on its own. The fabric is comfortable against bare skin and it stayed dry even though my shell had soaked through.

Also Angus, that isn't exactly an answer.

The North Face Apex Elixir Vest - Men's

September 28, 2008

How is it that you're #7 Gear Guru on the site and you cant just put it in the review section?

Well, can you show me how to do that? I posted the review a few days ago and I just got back from a 3 day trip today and figured I would let people know how the vest performed.

Answer to: "What size is the waist/hip belt?"

Vaude Asymmetric 50 Backpack - 3050 cu in

September 28, 2008

Unless you are very small or very large you should be fine. It probably fits perfectly somewhere around a 36ish but will fit just fine with a wide range of waist sizes. The point of "one size" is that one size fits everybody.

Solid Vest

The North Face Apex Elixir Vest - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 September 25, 2008

I've been very impressed with this vest. It is thin but retains heat very well. The fabric is super stretchy and it repels water and blocks wind like a champ. I got it for use as a midlayer under my Epsilon SV and it fits really well despite the athletic cut of the Arcteryx as well as my Alchemy. This vest is comfortable, close fitting but stretchy, and very effective. Worth the money. Note: it has a hem drawcord and an internal chest pocket, neither of which is listed in the tech specs.

Love my Lightning

Sierra Designs Lightning 2 Tent - 2 Person 3 Season

Rating for this product: 5 September 24, 2008

I got this tent a few years ago and have loved it. It is super light and it doesn't skimp on the important stuff. I've never had a problem with leakage. The fly did get soaked while I was backpacking in Colorado this summer, but it was because the tent was pitched for 15 hours in a huge downpour and even then, everything inside the tent stayed dry. This tent is really sturdy, simple, and has everything I need: room for two full size sleeping pads plus some gear inside, a huge stash door, and a vestibule with room for boots and packs. You can comfortably sleep two people in the Lightning and not worry about ending up on top of each other. Some advice, use the nylon cord that comes with the tent and stake out the back side of the fly, it really helps ventilate the tent. The thing is durable too, never ripped, even a little in some rough handling. All in all, a great tent in a lightweight and durable package.

Answer to: "Would this be a good beginner backpacking tent? Anybody?"

ALPS Mountaineering Zephyr 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season Tent

September 22, 2008

It's light and very easy to set up in the rain or dark. Good for one person on week-long or more treks, or 2 people on the long weekend. Also cooking is possible on a small camp-stove in the vestibule
