Casual Hiker
Montrail Comp XCR Hiking Boot - Men's
March 9, 2008
I wanted replacements for my "Casaul Hikers" as I call them. I wnated these shoes not so much used for hiking as for an all around rugged outdoorsy, "go to the park (lots of walking and exposure to the elements) and then dinner out". The problem I found is that the more rugged the shoe, the more garish the colors and the big honkin' soles. My old pair, from Danner, were marketed as approach shoes, no longer exist, and the whole "approach" category seems to have changed or disappeared. The shoe company's would benefit by continuing to offer something between hikers and casual shoes. These Comp XCR shoes are the closest I could find, and are very comfortable, and the "earth tones" color selection make them more acceptable to my conservative tastes. The soles are a little more than pronounced than I need, but hey, I was tired of looking and I believe they will last forever. My only complaint, which is really just indicative of my Type "A" personality and I could stand to let go of, is that these shoes take more care and attention to put on and lace correctly. I was used to throwing my old pair on and be out the door. The extra cushioning and supportive lacing on these boots require a few seconds of tightening and adjusting before you have them fitting snug and comfortable. The advantage is that they will be comfortable all day, and you will not get blisters. All in all, I would buy them again in a snap. Hope this helps....!
