The North Face Revolution Pant - Men's

The sizing chart says the XL is for a 40-42 inch waist. Yeah, that sounds way too large for you.

The North Face Chilkats Winter Boot - Men's

July 7, 2008

I wouldn't worry as much with an insulated boot. You are right that sizing does vary slightly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but insulated boots will never be as precise of a fit as other types of footwear. Based on reviews, I went up half a size in the pull on version of these boots and found that they're a good fit with thick winter socks. That said, I probably could have gone with my regular size. If you sometimes have to size up, then I would size up in this boot just to be safe.

As for a direct answer to your question of how sizes are calculated, each manufacturer calculates them slightly differently. If it's a real concern that you'll get the wrong size, then try to find them locally. Or you could order from Zappos since they pay for shipping on returns. However, they only take returns for unworn shoes. Backcountry has a much more liberal return policy.

great quality pan

GSI Outdoor Extreme Frypan

Rating for this product: 5 June 18, 2008

I've had the 10" version of this pan for a few years and always take it with me when I'm car camping. It distributes heat evenly, the non-stick has been durable, and the folding handle is a great space saver. The handle also doesn't get hot, which is a problem I've had with various other frying pans. Highly recommended.

Dig the logo placement

Backcountry.com Wool Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 June 3, 2008

I've really got no big complaints about this one. The hood seems big enough to wear over a helmet, which is a little odd for a non-tech jacket, but that's not a big deal. I've been comfortable anywhere from 55 degrees down to just below freezing. I love the styling and the fact that the logo placement is subtle since I hate being a billboard for anyone. I'm 6'1", 175 lbs and went with the large. Fit is right on. Wish there was a version without a hood.

Answer to: "What is the sizing on these? Do you need to order size up?"

Backcountry.com The Goat Organic Cotton T-Shirt - Short-Sleeve - Men's

May 23, 2008

I would say yes. The large ones from last season fit me well, but this one was tight in the chest. I returned it and should have an XL waiting for me on my doorstep when I get home tonight. I hope it's not too long.

Marmot PreCip Jacket - Men's

May 17, 2008

It's 12 oz or 340g. This jacket is very packable but it doesn't come with a pouch and I've never noticed that it packs within itself. I always just wad it up and throw it in my pack.

Revolution Climbing, Inc. 30 Hold Combo

May 4, 2008

Yes, but it's not as simple as that. At a minimum you'll need to attach 3/4" plywood to your studs that you can then attach the holds to. Here's some information from Metolius on how to properly build a climbing wall.

Inseam and length are the same thing. The order is waist x inseam. That's always the case for pants.

GSI Outdoor Utility Dry Box

I'm guessing it would float as long as you don't put anything absurdly heavy in it, but you can lash it down to keep it from going anywhere.

DC Ratna Sweater - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 March 28, 2008

I wore this sweater when I went to the bank to get a loan, and they approved me on the spot! Sizing feels true. Definitely not a trim fit, but also not baggy. The only problem is that it pills fairly easily on the cuffs, but that's not a deal breaker. And sometimes it's a little too warm to wear inside.

Answer to: "Anyone know what the difference is between this and the normal..."

Backcountry.com Shift Composite Jacket - Men's

March 8, 2008

I just got the jkt (shift-composite black/cinder) today, and as far as i can tell it is powershield all around the exterior. The black part has a slightly thick fleece interior vs the cinder which is a thinner fleece interior. The black part also felt slightly more rugged...probably for backpacks and bushwacks. I ran the sink hose on both sections and they seemed equally water resistant. The thinner fleece under the arms may aid in breathability.

This seems similar to the marmot superhero in that it has 2-3 different interiors based on function.

Bottom line...i'm happy with the purchase (power shield, made in Canada, good fit(still need to wear it though).

You can always order it w/ free shipping. Worst comes to worst, it'll cost you a few bucks to return.

EDIT:
This is not all Power Shield. The panels are Power Stretch. I have not touched the Shift, but I expect it is entirely Power Shield. The "black part" is Power Shield with wind and water resistance and insulation. The "cinder part" is Power Stretch which is just smooth surface, stretchy, non-wind and non-water resistant fabric. It offers high breathability and stretchy ease of movement. I asked several times and the folks there seemed to think it was Power Shield, but after it arrived, it was easy to tell the difference, and they were happy to pay for the return since it was incorrectly described.

**********
This is someone else, so I left the original info intact and thought I would clear this up.
I just got off the horn with them guys at Backcountry, and found out that the Composite, is Powershield with panels that are powerstretch. It sounds like to me that it would make this one better for more athletic activities and easier range of movement.

From what I know of these materials they are all treated the same way with DWR so they should be just as waterproof as the other, but this has more stretch but not as warm as the normal Shift.

Also if you want info on the different materials check polartec.com and it is all there so you can see differences.
Know you know, and knowing is half the battle.
