Warm as Toast
Mountain Hardwear Monkey Jacket - Women's
December 1, 2005
A warm, super-soft, super-snuggly jacket. Great styling too. Its only fault, and this is minor, is that the elastic waist has a tendency to ride up. Thank you, Mountain Hardwear, for your intelligent and well-made garments!

Can Recommend These Pants
Patagonia Rain Shadow Pant - Women's
October 19, 2005
These rain pants do their job: they keep you snug and dry. If they won't win any awards for style, but that’s OK—they do the job they were made to do (which is more than I can say for the OR pants they replaced).

Practical Pack
The North Face Slingshot Backpack - 2000cu in
February 11, 2005
I took a chance ordering this pack online, without seeing it first, but I was happily surprised. It was the perfect daypack for my trip to Libya, easily holding camera gear, reading material, rainwear (yes, we needed it along the seacoast!), personal items, and 2 water bottles. It's very comfortable to wear, too.

A Nice Little Camp Pillow
Therm-a-Rest Deluxe Pillow 10x14
February 11, 2005
For the money, this is a nice little camp pillow and well worth taking along for extra comfort. A washable case would have made a good pillow great.

Capilene II Need Revision
Patagonia Capilene Midweight Bottoms - Womens
February 11, 2005
These Capilene bottoms were part of my second set of Patagonia Capilene midweight underwear, the first having been purchased about five years ago. The earlier set was absolutely toasty. This one is less so; the fabric seems less substantial and not as soft next to the skin--too synthetic, somehow (which, of course, it is). Finally, at 5'7" I'm no Amazon, but the legs on these bottoms are short by about an inch and ride up horribly when I'm putting pants over them.

Never Winter? Never 40's
Marmot Never Winter Sleeping Bag: 30 Degree Down
February 11, 2005
I bought this bag for camping in the Sahara Desert in Libya. (We were instructed to bring a 30-degree bag.) Nighttime temps in January dipped to the low 40's, and I was cold in this bag. It would be OK, probably, with Capilene underwear (which I did not expect to need). Bottom line: this mummy bag is handsome and cozy down to about 45; however, if you expect lower temps, be prepared with extra layers!

Toasters Are Cool, Comfortable
Smith Toaster Sunglasses - Interchangeable
February 1, 2005
These sunglasses are comfortable, practical, and cool-looking. This is my second pair (I lost the first), and I'll buy them again if I lose these. I wore them in the Libyan Sahara and they provided great protection from sun and windblown sand. The "Rootbeer Fade" color goes with everything. Highly recommended.
