Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

August 26, 2008

I own this jacket and I would say this is it. It is as light as even any Gore tex pac lite backpacking jacket, and it can handle mountaineering with ease. It's pretty damn durable despite how light it is. Gore-Tex Pro is still one of the most reliable fabrics out there so you know what you get with that. I use this jacket for all my outdoor waterproof needs. That includes climbing in the north cascades and backpacking in Arizona. However, it's expensive and if you wanna knock the price down but keep the weight down, look at the Alpha SL, which is made from the Gore-Tex paclite. It will keep you just as dry i just don't think it's quite as durable. The only downside to this jacket is it's cut a little bit on the short side so I use a different jacket for resort skiing/snowboarding (I usually use a softshell for that)but then again I'm a tall (6'4") lanky guy and I always have trouble finding stuff long enough. If you can afford this jacket (Alpha LT) go for it. Oh and it has the best hood design ever that can fit your bare head or whatever helmet you desire

La Sportiva Mythos Climbing Shoe - Men's

April 28, 2008

no i wouldn't. Sportiva mountaineering boots tend to fit truer to size. I just go down a size in climbing shoes to get a good feel on rock but you need to be comfortable in mountaineering boots.

Amazing

La Sportiva Nepal EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 25, 2008

These are absolutely incredible boots. I've seen several pro guides wear these, and with good reason, they are comfortable yet probably as warm as a single boots can be. they are stiff, climb and grip well and for a stiff mountaineering boot, they walk really well too. All in all, I can't say enough good things about this boot. The fit seems to be a little wider in the toe box than most Sportivas but it seems like this boot in particular fits such a wide range of feet. Although Sportiva definitely has the reputation of being a little on the narrow side i'd say these boot are right in the middle with a pretty narrow heel but I'm of fan of the fact that these boots fit like a glove!

Petzl Aztar Ice Tool

April 18, 2008

Hey I'm wondering if these tools can be used leashless. I'm looking at these and the petzl aztarex and not quite sure which I want. I'm looking for versatility for technical mountaineering more than anything.

La Sportiva Trango S EVO GTX Mountaineering Boot - Men's

March 29, 2008

sportiva does not really cater to wide feet. Especially, and i mean especially anything built on the trango last. If you need a wide, nothing from the trango series will fit you. If you want a warmer, stiffer mountaineering boot check out the Sportiva Nepal EVO. I have it and the heel is narrow but the toe box is much wider and it's an incredible boot. Still a single leather.

Great jacket but size up!

Mountain Hardwear Torch Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 4 March 6, 2008

I ended up going with the gamma mx instead of this jacket just because of the fit. I normally wear a large in most jackets cause I am 6'4" and lanky. This jacket fits like a glove and i loved it except for one thing...It is cut very short. I probably could have just gone with an XL but I decided to get the gamma mx which is a very comparable jacket and almost $100 more expensive unfortnately. The gamma mx lacks pit zips while the torch has them which gives the torch a huge advantage. However the gamma's hood design is infinitely better and it's cut longer which made me go with that. My friend just got the torch, sized up one size from his normal size, and loves it. So all in all this is a wonderful jacket and damn near waterproof just be careful of the sizing but if it doesn't fit you these guys will help you out! One of the two best hooded softshells out there

so amazing and pretty

Arc'teryx Gamma MX Hooded Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 March 6, 2008

i went with this jacket over the torch simply because it was cut a little longer and fit me much better. I am 6'4" and lanky and 185 lbs and the L fits me wonderfully. This jacket lacks pit zips compared to the MHW torch and this powershield material seems a little thicker but other than that I love it. The hood design, and is the case on all other arc teryx jackets, is far and wide the best. Expensive but if you want an awesome versatile softshell this is it

Wow

Arc'teryx Alpha LT Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 January 7, 2008

Well to be honest, I was afraid to wear this jacket after spending so much money on it and realizing how light it is. That being said, this jacket is pretty damn durable despite it's ridiculously low weight. It is as waterproof as can be and while i haven't used it that much yet (I will definitly update my review if anything goes wrong with it) the new gore-tex pro shell seems amazing. I was trying to chose between this jacket and the Alpha SL (which is half the cost) and made with the Pac-lite rather than the pro-shell, which after a bunch of research, I found is not as durable over the long term but it depends on your use. I decided to go with this jacket because I want something that was light and that I can beat up and I plan on using it for mountaineering as well as a light, packable rain jacket. The SL is a great jacket, my roomate has one, but consider your uses before you buy. The only thing you need to be careful about both the alpha's is they are cut short in the front. I am a tall skinny guy and the a L is a little too short for me in the front but I'm keeping it anyway because it will still do the job. Oh yeah, best hood design ever on this jacket. Fits your head snugly yet can fit a helmet, amazing.
