The shoes not only keep the canoe from shifting, but keep a great reference point for balancing the canoe back on top. The straps that come with the kit are awesome - quick tie down ratchets that work with a single touch. A lot of thought and experience went into the design of this system. If I ever find myself having to tie a boat down the old fashioned way, I'll be sorely disappointed. If you have a canoe, this is money well spent.

When I went to pick up the canoe from the store, the guy helping me commented "nice rack - I wish we sold those here". I'm assuming that wasn't a pick-up line. Once these bars were on the roof, I was convinced that if I was involved in a rollover accident, these bars would be one of just a few things left on the frame of the car. Solid feel and easy to install - two thumbs up.
