Its a quilt!
GoLite Ultra Sleeping Bag: 20 Degree Down
June 23, 2008
take note, this isn't a "bag". Its a quilt, and not for everyone. I have made my own quality down quilts both for top and hammock bottom insulation, and have compared the Ultra directly to brands like Nunatak and Jacks-r-Better. The Ultra is at least as nice as those two, but is made in China which swayed my dollar to find its way to a "cottage" gear maker. still the Ultra is a valuable piece of gear and Id give it a performance rating of 4 out of 5. Catch it on sale, you wont regret it.

ounce counters beware
Marmot Ion Windshirt - Men's
February 22, 2008
I was giddy at the idea that a hooded jacket could be 3 ounces- but ounce counters and gram freaks beware! I have a Men's SMALL and my brand new calibrated scale measures it at 4.7 the construction is ok, but no drawstring at the waist and the drawstring keepers at the hood are flimsy foam that wont last. Should have used mini-mini cordlocks. Bottom Line: if you are going to advertise a weight, at least weigh the item.

LEKI Ultralite Ti Cor-Tec Trekking Poles - 1 Pair
May 17, 2007
I have used these poles in the harsh desert environs of the Superstition Wilderness and trekking through Grand Canyon corridors... they are remarkably light and tough for the weight too! I like the smaller hand grips- and that the poles pack smaller than anything out there. Comfortable to hold up or down hill- but be advised there is not an anti-shock on them. I rated them a 4 for solid performers, but not perfect because IMO these Lekis don't come with rubber tips for road walking. you have to pay extra!?

Petzl e+LITE Emergency Headlamp
January 12, 2007
As an ultralight backpacker, I'm looking for the best bang for the weight and buck. This little Petzl light has a great feel to it, weighs even less than my single LED lamp and comes in a carry case (optional use) that is the size of Tic Tacs. With 360-degree swivel head and several light options, this little guy is perfect for a primary camp light. Don't let the name "emergency" fool ya!

G.G. Virga
Granite Gear Virga Ultra Light Packer Backpack - 3200cu in
February 23, 2006
I agree with the other review; this pack was a replacement for the GoLite Jam, the Jam being a fine pack for solo overnighters. But the Virga, packed properly with my base weight of 9-10 pounds carries so softly and comfy. I use a BA air core pad as the "framesheet" and pack softer items toward the back. Works for climbing, it’s water resistant and it holds up to the Southwest's gnarly cat claw and cacti. This pack is light enough to stow into a larger pack for use as a daypack or explorer pack. I’m very happy!
