Answer to: "has anyone owned a mountain hardwear tent?"

Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1 Tent 1-Person 3-Season

I love mine, it's quite a bit different than this particular one (casa 6) but it is very high quality construction and very good design.

Arc'teryx Bora 80 Backpack - 4390-5000cu in

Does inside not work? This pack is quite large, there would be plenty of room inside for the tent. If it has to be on the outside, I would recommend maybe putting the tent poles on the side or across the bottom in the straps, and then putting the body of the tent at the top of the pack, inside.

Answer to: "can it be used in the microwave?"

GSI Outdoor Lexan Cup - 12 oz

July 18, 2008

Yes and no. Yes it can be used, and it will work just fine, it is the same material Nalgenes were made out of until recently. The no part comes from the risk of BPA leaching in something like this. Lexan is generally safe, and so far research only shows that the BPA is leached in significant amounts when it is heated. So it can be, it just may not be the best idea to do so.

Gore Bike Wear Windstopper Arm Warmer III

July 18, 2008

Any reason a regular long sleeve jersey or shirt won't do the trick? These are for cold days when it ends up warm (or vice versa), which is why they are modular, but I would think for sun protection in heat, a long sleeve shirt would do just as well.

Diadora Ergo Carbon Mountain Bike Shoes - Men's

July 17, 2008

Check out Sidi's mega line of shoes. Backcountry doesn't stock them, but they're the best out there.

Sidi's Dealer Locater (not entirely comprehensive, be sure to call around to your local bike shops too…):
http://sidiusa.com/dealers.html

I have 9.5 EEEE feet and for some reason I've had good luck with cycling shoes. SIDI in road and Nike or Specialized for MTB.

Backcountry does actually carry at least one of SIDI's shoes in the Mega(wide) sizes. Check out the SIDI Zeta SID0013. I have a wide foot (15 4E) and these fit phenomenally well.

If you look at the picture, the side to the left in the image is the neck hole. Then, Cheechoo's legs go one either side of that center strap that makes a Y off the neck hole. Then those two back plush looking straps are for his belly so you can pick him up if need be (Warning, not all dogs are fans of being picked up, I would try a small test lift first before teeth are at face level) Hope this helps you and Cheechoo.

Answer to: "Does the down quality really affect how warm the bag is? If one..."

Big Agnes Mystic SL Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

July 17, 2008

It makes a difference in the weight. 800 fill means that one ounce of down fills up 800 cubic centimeters, whereas 600 would be 600 cubic centimeters. So the higher number actually means that less down is used because it is a higher quality down that fills more for its weight, making the bag lighter.

The North Face Snowshoe Sleeping Bag: 0 Degree Climashield Prism - Women's

July 16, 2008

My girlfriend is a similar size, and I ended up buying her the one of the MontBell Burrow (or Hugger if you want down) bags. They're nice because the bag has some elasticity to it, so it maximizes thermal efficiency. They're not women's specific bags, but they have a drawcord on the bottom baffle to make the bag shorter. My girlfriend actually has found that she likes the "bootie" effect that pulling the cord around her ankles gives her. I would recommend that bag 100%

Really nice and spacious

Kelty Ouray 3 Tent 3-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2008

This is a nice, spacious tent. I'm tall, so I was looking for a tent that I could not only fit into, but get in and out of easily. The non-vertical doors make it very easy to get step up and out, rather than crawling out awkwardly and trying to stand at the same time. This tent has room for two people and gear easily, and probably enough for 3 people if they were all on the smaller side. I can't say enough good things about the design and quality of the tent.

Does what a footprint does.

Kelty Ouray 3 Footprint

Rating for this product: 5 June 29, 2008

It is worth buying one of these when you buy the tent, your tent will thank you, and over the course of a few years, your wallet will too. Much easier to replace a footprint than to replace a tent.

Nice lamp

Princeton Tec Aurora Headlamp

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2008

Great little lightweight, simple to use headlamp. To get full use of the 5 modes, you may have to play with it for a little while (I did) or read the instructions (I did not). Very easy to pack, bright light, definitely sufficient for most nighttime activities at the brightest setting, and low enough to read and not blind yourself at the dimmest setting.

Cool bag, but helmet won't fit where it shows

Mountainsmith Bike Cube

Rating for this product: 4 June 27, 2008

I like this bag, it seems durable and fairly well thought out, but I bought it in part because I thought my helmet would fit in th emesh sleeve, as shown in the picture. I was most certainly incorrect. This may have something to do with me having a large size helmet, or the particular helmet that I have (Giro Monza) but I was unimpressed with that aspect. It also seems to not want to stand on its own unless fully loaded, and it would take A LOT to fully load this thing. I've got shoes, tools, helmet, extra lock cable, and some other random stuff in there, and it is STILL not full. So if you're looking for a go anywhere and do anything bag that you can fill with gear, this is it, but if you just need a place for your shoes, change of clothes, and a couple of tools, I would look for something a little smaller.

Rating for this product: 5 June 27, 2008

If you're going to own only one book on wilderness medicine, this should be it. Well, this or Medicine for Mountaineering, but this one is a lot more practical and easy to read. Answer to: "Ok, obviously a novice. Got a bag that came with a compression..."

Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Down

June 23, 2008

Make sure all the straps on the compression sack are completely loosened, and then just stuff it in there. I usually go foot of the bag into the sack first, but that may just be an old habit with no basis in helpfulness. Make sure you don't store the bag in the compression sack, or it will lose a lot of its loft in a relatively short amount of time.

WOW this was small

Castelli Pioggia Rain Jacket - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 June 4, 2008

I read the previous reviews saying size up, and thankfully they had a 3X in stock, but it was still far too small. I'm a fairly large person, not fat, but large all the way through. This fit tightly across my back, under the arms, and in the forearms. On top of all that, it hit pretty high on my torso (above the belly button). I would have really liked it outside of the size issue, and the return was smooth and very quick.

They fit great right out of the box, even for my large, wide, and high-volume feet. They breathe well, grip well, and look good. These are my new everyday summer shoe. I wish they had slightly more padding/shock absorption, but they are great light hikers and everyday shoes. Would buy again and again!

I would measure yourself and compare it to the size chart, just a height and weight isn't enough to make a good guess because everyone carries their weight in different places. Can't go wrong traveling with these. Although they advertise that you can go anywhere for a long time and just wear one pair, I would recommend getting two so you can wash one and wear one. Great for backpacking too, wash em in the stream and then lash onto your pack to dry. Great tent

Kelty Gunnison 2 Tent 2-Person 3-Season

Rating for this product: 5 May 3, 2008

I've had this tent for about 5 years now, and used it in just about every type of weather Utah has (which is a lot) and it has performed pretty flawlessly. I initially got it because I, like the reviewer below, am quite tall, and this tent had the space I wanted. I also liked the two doors, no climbing over your buddy to go to the bathroom at night. For summer, you can't beat this tent, nice ventilation and durability. Even in the shoulder seasons where it gets a little cooler and wetter, this tent still rocks, the rainfly is functional, and ventilates acceptably when set up correctly. There are lighter and more expensive tents out there, but for the money, you can't beat this one.

Answer to: "is it a quick-drying towel? like sea to summit towels?"

MSR Packtowl UltraLite

May 2, 2008

I'm not super familiar with the sea to summits, but it is a very fast drying towel. I took it on a river trip and it performed very well.

Answer to: "Can you cook using the lid as a sauce pan?"

Snow Peak Titanium Cookware - 4pcs

April 29, 2008

It's all titanium, I don't see why not. It won't have a handle, but it'll work.

Answer to: "I am a 5'6" woman; would a women's specific bag fit me or should..."

Marmot Trestles 15 Sleeping Bag: 15 Degree Spirafil - Women's

April 27, 2008

At 5'6", you're on the edge for height range on this bag, so it'll come down to whether you want to be more comfortable or more thermally efficient. That said, I bought my girlfriend a women's bag, and she likes it a lot more than using one of mine, mostly for the feet warming and general cut of the bag.

I kinda dig that the first answer comes from a guy named Big Brian. Nice work brother.

Answer to: "What about arches? Does it come equipped with some? I need good..."

Chaco ZX/2 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

April 26, 2008

The arch support in these is phenomenal. My mom has a whole mess of foot problems, and needs good arch support, and her podiatrist recommended Chacos. Personally, I love mine, and they give me enough support for light hiking, and possibly more, depending on terrain.

April 26, 2008

Not 100% sure, but I would doubt it, better to get the 185 version and have some extra room.

Adventure Medical Heatsheets Emergency Blanket

I have the emergency bivy that is similar to this, and mine is a sort of tyvek-like material, very tough for the weight.

Answer to: "How does this watch compare with some of nixon's more expensive..."

Nixon Scout Watch

April 21, 2008

I have this watch and absolutely love it. I don't think there's any noticeable quality difference, except maybe cloth vs. leather strap. It is just a basic watch, with fairly low metal content (for Nixon) which is why it's cheaper.

My favorite pair

Mountain Hardwear Kurtis Short - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2008

I love these shorts perhaps a little too much. The back slash pockets are incredibly useful for jamming just about anything into. I wore them for an entire week on the San Juan river and they performed flawlessly. Very easy to move in, and incredibly versatile.

Killer sandals

Chaco Z/1 Unaweep Sandal - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2008

I love these sandals for just about everything but snowsports. I prefer the Z/1s to the Z/2s because you can throw a pair of socks on if it gets chilly in the woods at night. Incredibly durable and comfortable.

Weird pockets almost ruin it

Mountain Hardwear Matterhorn Trunk - Men's

Rating for this product: 3 April 11, 2008

I wanted to like these shorts, and I suppose I do like them, but there are too many pockets placed in odd places that I didn't find super functional. They also seemed to fit a fair amount larger than two other pairs of Mountain Hardwear shorts I bought at the same time. I would recommend the Kurtis short and the Coolidge trunk as more functional alternatives.

Can't say anything that hasn't been said already

Timbuk2 Classic Messenger Bag

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2008

This is a great bag. There are very few things on earth capable of destroying it. Love the waterproof interior, especially when I it pulls double duty as a cooler on those summer evening cruises.

Great shorts

Mountain Hardwear Coolidge Trunk - Men's

Rating for this product: 5 April 11, 2008

I love these shorts. They're nice and simple, with huge front slash pockets and sufficiently sized back pockets. They dry super quickly and don't hold stains at all. Awesome for both hiking/backpacking/technical use and everyday casual wear.

Answer to: "the poles aren't included it says. how do you set it up and..."

Kelty Noah's Tarp

April 5, 2008

I got a kelty brand pole from here a couple years ago, but it doesn't look like they sell that anymore. You can get them at most outdoor stores, or you can pitch it with trekking poles or on trees. These tarps are really handy.

Great set

GSI Outdoor Bugaboo Cookset

Rating for this product: 5 April 2, 2008

Got these for car camping, and they do not disappoint. Might be a little heavy for backpacking, but taking a single component for backpacking wouldn't be bad at all. A nice cookset at a good price, these are nicer pots than the ones I use at home.
