The North Face Nuptse Winter Bootie - Men's
November 11, 2006
Great bottom for actual around camp use. A little heavier but better traction. They actually run a little big if anything. Not too warm either.

Icebreaker Sport320 Rock Zip Shirt - Long Sleeve - Men's
November 11, 2006
Just what you'd expect from a $100 wool top. Nice for layering, well made, looks good, heavier that synthetic but 100 times better smelling for actual backpacking. I wonder how well they wear with long term use as an outer layer- with backpack abrasion for instance?

Patagonia R.5 Top - Men's
November 11, 2006
Great function/comfort/looks. But it's synthetic and will stink after an hour of sweating, and I don't mind body odor. I hiked for 30 minutes when too hot, just to see what'd happen. Sure enough, I passed the stink threshold, which takes about 2 weeks in a similar wool top. As awesome as Patagonia's capilene/synthethic stuff is, I predict a continuing trend toward naturals. All the new wool stuff is superior unless you shower daily and sweat minimally.

Jansport Klamath II Backpack - 5200 cu in
November 11, 2006
But totally different/changed from the '05 pack. No bottom securing straps, which threw me for a loop, but I guess folks are putting their tents inside packs these days. Seems like a waste of pack space to me. I picked up a Mountainsmith circuit 3.0, 5400 cu/in. really nice with lots of external pockets for organization and on the trail access.
